Sarah Young's writings are God-blessed and inspired. This book came about during a time of her own personal problems and so she speaks from experience which helps the reader to relate. She is credible. Every day there are conversations between the reader and God. A sample of how each format is set up goes something like this: DEAR JESUS, I desperately need to learn how to live in the present moment. BELOVED, you need My grace in order to live in the present. Each conversation is followed by relevant Scripture. A wonderful devotional to get you started each morning.

Many times I think I have failed in my prayer time with Jesus, and this book showed Jesus understands and gives help to bring me even closer to him! I love how the book gives me scripture to back up what's said and answers for my Spiritual growth. Listening to the this book and suggestions, I find I am not alone with my struggles and others struggle too in the very way I do! I am growing better in my walk with Christ, and the more I study it the better I feel and live!

I found this book to be written just for me. It speaks directly from my thoughts and as if Jesus is holding a regular, face-to-face conversation with me. I am impressed that Sarah Young thinks as I do when responding to the Scriptures. Thanks for making this book available on kindle. It is always with me and I use it for encouragement and refocus. A great resource.

This small book comes first with a struggle Jesus tells us about ourselves, second with a prayer/response to help us admit the sin or struggle, and third with words Jesus speaks to us and scripture to back up those words. It is in a dialogue format that helps one to focus on what He is trying to say to us. As with all her other books and devotions, Sarah Young, has been used as a vessel by the Lord. Together they have hit it out of the park with awe inspiring moments for each day. Batter up! Begin your windup (your day) with this book. You will not be sorry!

Sarah Young has again brought us to the Throne of Grace with her book on Prayer. Dear Jesus is a lovely way to come into the Lord's presence and find Him ready to meet us wherever we are on our walk. A dear friend gave me this book before she went Home to be with Jesus, so it is also a sweet reminder of her and her steadfast faith!

I absolutely love Sarah Young! I have many of her books and I have the apps. I use her writings for my worship every morning. I feel that the Lord speaks to me through her books.

I have been blest by reading 'Dear Jesus'. Since so many Christians settle for connecting mostly "intellectually" with Christ, this book has great value because it helps a person to 'connect heart to heart with Jesus'. This leads to not only information ABOUT Christ, but a relationship WITH Christ.I required the students in my seminary class this semester to read at least 5 days of Dear Jesus each week and to meditate on the scriptures and then to journal what God was saying to them. It was interesting that most of the ones that struggled with reading Sarah's book in the beginning were men. But almost all of them had been won over by the end of the semester! All of the women were moved by her words from the very beginning. One of the men in my class said, "I'll have to admit I was not crazy about reading a devotional book especially one with flowers and pretty pages but this book is so powerful that the pages and cover have little effect on me anymore."Thank you Sarah Young for being so transparent and open. If we will admit it, we have all experienced what you are saying. And when we admit it, God works IN us, changing us! Thanks!

This is another fine addition to Sarah Young's wonderfully spiritual books. I can't praise them enough. I read them daily and over and over. Each entry in each book is an exceptional, even essential meditation to begin your day with. Sarah brings us to a very close, very personal connection to Jesus; a beautiful way to seek Him on a regular basis. Each is a personal prayer. In addition, all her meditations are absolutely relevant to our times and very down to earth. I highly recommend her books to everyone, regardless of religious preference. A must read!!

For some time I had planned to read this book. The title suggests a scientific examination of how and why European nations had evolved to subjugate less developed cultures. I was fine with the author's assertions until I hit page 19 and Diamond stated that in his opinion the people of New Guinea are smarter than the average European or American. This assertion is then supported by Diamond's personal observations and no scientific data. That was it for me. I have no personal problem with the suggestion that one cultural group could on average be smarter than myself as an American but base that assertion on fact not opinion. In the end I would suggest that cultural and socio-economic factors affect the achievements of any society. In other words, God gave us all a brain. We all have equal potential but it's how that potential is developed and utilized that affects the outcome. Diamond's unsupported observations smack of left wing apologist ideology and I have better things to do with my time.

Two decades ago a UCLA geography professor named Jared Diamond published Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. Diamond hypothesized that the arc of human history was dramatically shifted by geographic, environmental, biological, and other factors, resulting in the worldwide dominance of the leading industrial powers during the past 500 years. The book won a 1997 Pulitzer Prize and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Why is economic development so uneven around the world?Diamond posed questions fundamental to the experience of the human race. “Why did wealth and power [among nations] become distributed as they now are, rather than in some other way?” “[W]hy did human development proceed at such different rates on different continents?” “[W]hy were Europeans, rather than Africans or Native Americans, the ones to end up with guns, the nastiest germs, and steel?” In his award-winning book, Diamond posited a “unified synthesis”—a unified field theory of history. Drawing from his wide-ranging knowledge of medicine, evolutionary biology, physiology, linguistics, and anthropology as well as geography, he surveyed the history of the past 13,000 years and identified plausible answers to the questions he had posed. In the process, he wrote what I consider to be the single most illuminating book on the history of the human race.Academic critics howledHowever, academic critics howled shortly after the publication of Guns, Germs, and Steel: They referred to supposed errors in geography and history, which I find largely pointless. For example, geographers complained that Diamond referred to Eurasia as a single continent rather than separately to Asia, North Africa, and Europe. That’s nitpicking, as far as I’m concerned. And many of these “errors” could simply be differences of opinion. Academics are unbearably dogmatic and dismissive of those who reject their pet theories. Some accused him of racism, although he rejected racist explanations early, forcefully, and often. That criticism is not only unsupported by Diamond’s book, it’s insulting to the reader. The most common and far-reaching complaint was that Diamond had succumbed to the heresy of “environmental determinism.” Understandably, Diamond grounded his argument in geographic and environmental factors—but he repeatedly cited numerous other influences as well. Ultimately, of course, everything we humans do, and everything we’ve done in the millions of years since our ancestors first climbed out of the trees, has been environmentally determined. There were complaints that Diamond had overlooked the contrast between temperate and tropical zones (he didn’t) and that he had only explained what happened 500 years ago but not subsequently (untrue). It might appear that at least some of Diamond’s critics never read the book. However, the most aggravating criticism was that he had ignored the motives that led the industrial nations to undertake colonialism and imperialism on a broad scale. Diamond addressed only the means that enabled the colonial powers to dominate, not the reasons why they chose to do so. To my mind, that’s no error. He didn’t pretend to explain colonialism and imperialism, merely to describe how it had become possible. Is it possible that most of these academic critics were simply bitter that Diamond hadn’t cited their own specialized research? The roots of academic criticismThough the critics undoubtedly uncovered a misplaced fact or unwarranted conclusion here and there through the book, the errors were exceedingly minor in the context of Diamond’s expansive hypothesis. It should be clear to any dispassionate reader that the academic reaction stemmed, above all, from narrow-mindedness and jealousy. The world of academia today is atomized. Specialties, sub-specialties, and sub-sub-specialties abound. It’s not unusual for a scholar to build a career on the study of a single obscure question that, when answered, will be of interest to virtually nobody. Interdisciplinary studies are frowned upon in most academic circles. Generalists are regarded as “not serious.” And scholars who write popular books, must less bestsellers, can expect a chilly reception from their peers.A wealth of meaning behind the titleTo understand where the academic critics went wrong, it’s useful to look at what Diamond signified by his title, Guns, Germs, and Steel. Early in his book, he dwells on the confrontation between the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and the Inca god-king Atahuallpa. “The immediate reasons for Pizarro’s success included military technology based on guns, steel weapons [such as swords and daggers], and horses; infectious diseases endemic in Eurasia; European maritime technology; the centralized political organization of European states; and writing. The title of this book will serve as shorthand for those proximate factors.”Diamond’s argument in a nutshellIn a Prologue, Diamond poses the question at the heart of this book. He quotes a friend in what is now Papua New Guinea from a conversation in 1972, when he was studying bird evolution there: “‘Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'” To answer the question, Diamond begins his story around the year 11,000 BCE, when the last Ice Age was drawing to a close and human beings were beginning to form villages in a few places around the world. It’s unclear whether the formation of villages preceded the deliberate cultivation and production of food, or vice versa. However, regardless of the sequence, that shift from hunter-gatherer society to agriculturally based settlements set in motion the course of events that have led to the “civilization” in which we live.Diamond argues, convincingly, that the much greater availability of domesticable plants and large animals in Eurasia than in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. Furthermore, he explains that the east-west orientation of Eurasia from the Bering Strait to the Atlantic Ocean made it possible for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry to spread quickly to distant lands. By contrast, the north-south orientation of the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa—and the presence of barriers such as the Sahara Desert, the Panamanian Isthmus, and the deserts of northern Mexico and southwestern United States—impeded the spread of these (and, later, other) new technologies to the extremities of those continents. The advent of food production enabled the development of ever-larger settlements. This, in turn, spelled the emergence of labor specialization and eventually the growth of empires as well as the appearance and spread of communicable diseases contracted from domesticated animals. Those differences in historical development eventually led to the “guns, germs, and steel” that made Eurasian dominance possible—and dictated the huge differences in economic development between what today we call East and West.Guns, Germs, and Steel is crammed with facts and densely written. It doesn’t make for light reading. But if you have any interest in understanding how the world came to be as it is, you’ll find this book highly rewarding.

Here is an author with an inquisitive mind. He searches, not how human races are different, but how they got there. What are the mechanisms that drove their various civilizations in such different trajectories? There exist only a limited number of plants and mammals that lend themselves to domestication and their availability determines the chances of hunter-gatherers to turn into a settled society and to progress in further advancement. In ancient times, if those essential domesticates were not present on your continent, you were indeed a have-not. In these pages you travel around the world and witness, how such factors have favored some sections of humanity more than others. This book is a wellspring of information about where we come from and the author distributes it out of a basket of abundant knowledge. You witness the changing face of humanity, usually under the passionate hand of brutality, from Khoisans to Bantus in Africa, from Negritos to Austro-Asians and Austronesians in the Far East, from the Ainus to Japanese, and then of course in that collision of the white man with the Redskins. The incredible judgment dispensed by Francisco Pizarro upon the Incas, supposedly in honor of the Church and the Holy Roman Emperor, will make you shake your head for a long time.In contrast to such scholarly research, it is hard to stomach the tasteless comments in some of the one-star reviews of this book. They remind you of what the Bible says about pearls and where you are not to cast them.

Where do I begin? Was he paid by the number of pages he wrote? Goes into way too much detail about things no one cares about. Also he is simply selecting things in history that conveniently fit his thesis, this is selection bias.He makes way too many sweeping generalizations and says that is the reason why so and so country is rich today. He writes that the larger the population a country has (e.g., it will have more Einsteins), the more competition there will be among its people and there will be more innovators among that population and therefore the country will invent more stuff and eventually become richer. If that's the case then why have no significant inventions come out of India or China in the past 100 years when they have 4x the population of the U.S.?This book has so many flaws in logic I don't even know how it is so highly rated on Amazon. Oh wait.. I get it now.

First book read by this author... It won't be the last. Oh, how I adore a scientific mind eloquently expressed via playful perceptions of interconnectedness. It's obviously not all fiction, and that's what I love most about this. I found myself learning about things I'd never thought about directly whilst enjoying his writing style that partially reads like a diary. Kind of reminds me how I always grew frustrated with my teachers who seemed to teach out of obligation rather than out of passion... This guy, wow. He'd be the most epic professor. You can feel how enthralled he is. And through that loud fascination, I'm now a lot more engrossed in transhumanism not just as a technological advancement, but a collective upgrade of tools as well. Love this. Absolutely love this.

In his book Natural Born Cyborgs, Andy Clark supports a view of human-machine symbiosis that puts our recent integration with computer interfaces on a continuum of human evolutionary development along with "clothes, cooking, bricklaying, and writing." Through his writing the author makes the case to support this view in which he systematically lays out a foundation for readers to see things from his perspective. Overall the book is written very well. I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind, some background in technology/neuroscience and a general interest in thinking about how we, in effect, have developed as human beings throughout the course of history. After first introducing the book by playing off of our fear of the fictional cyborgs we all know from the movies ie Terminator, Eve 8, Cable - the book begins with a brief introduction of the author's background; Andy Clark claims that it was during his time directing a new interdisciplinary program in philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology that he first realized this concept of "cyborg" that he details in this book. From here he introduces the idea of humans being intrinsically technology dependent beings. He states that his goal in writing such a book is "to hijack that image (our preconceived notion of cyborg) and to reshape it, revealing it as a disguised vision of our own biological nature." What really impressed me about his style of argument and writing was his use of examples from research in many different fields to illustrate his point. Where many times we see arguments like his fall into ambiguity and opinion, his use of concrete examples helps paint the picture of the story he tells. The book itself is very short, consisting of only 8 chapters, however every chapter has been thoroughly annotated so readers can dive deeper if they wish. For the sake of my synopsis I've divided the book into two halves.Chapters 1-3The first chapter of the book is spent educating the reader on where the term cyborg originally came from putting it in the context of the first early technologies which "sought to incorporate exogenous components extending the self-regulating control function of the organism in order to adapt it to new environments" Here Clark cites early osmotic pumps, auditory prosthetics, and peripheral nerve interfaces. The focus of this chapter is to draw out what Clark calls "an ancient western prejudice" which creates the illusionary belief that the mind is distinctly different from the rest of natural order. Instead of viewing technology as something distinct from our human nature he argues that technology is integrated and always has been integrated with our nature placing us in our current condition at a transition point between first wave (pen, paper, diagram, and digital media) and second wave (personalized, online, dynamic biotechnological unions) technologies. The cell phone is the technology he uses as an example of this transition.Moving from the concrete into more abstract realms Andy Clark then introduces the idea of transparent and opaque technologies before diving into his categorization of technologies, which he labels "ready-to-hand" and "present-at-hand." In categorizing the way people perceive and interact with technologies Clark attempts to bring some level of awareness to how we as lay people may simply generalize and interact with technologies and our environment taking what we have right in front of us for granted. The importance of understanding concepts such as these are again driven home using experimental example - in this case the ability of chimps who are trained to reason symbolically vs chimps who are not. Andy uses this example to make his point that only the chimps who were trained to reason symbolically were then able to understand higher order relationships - what he calls the relation between relations.Chapters 4-8Once laying out this abstract scaffold for his argument Andy Clark gets into his answers to bigger questions: Where are we? and What are we?. Here he takes the reader through reported experiments and experiences, which alter human perception through illusions and the use of technology based telepresence to play with the idea of embodied consciousness. From here he explores the application and ethics of such technologies for the future of mankind. Andy Clark takes a look at how this knowledge is already currently being used through computational application dipping into the darker areas of misuse of such information/technology. He ends this section making the point that it is not technology itself that is evil; it's how the technology is used. In conclusion Andy Clark argues that it's not the preconceived invasive and material tools themselves that make us cyborgs rather it's the extended thinking systems that are created as a result of these tools that make us who we are.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I especially liked the importance he gives to interdisciplinary perspectives. Through the experience of working on constructing an interdisciplinary research program at Georgia Tech under Dr. Steve Potter I came to notice and support many of the ideas presented here. What impressed me most about the book was the amazing job the author does in translating ideas to the reader through examples while at the same time demonstrating the concept in the structure of his writing. For example in introducing the idea of the symbolically reasoning chimps he is setting up the scaffold to introduce his concept of scaffolded thinking. The biggest problem I can see readers having with this book is what can appear as Andy Clark's loose use of what he defines as a technology. Because he is speaking of technology in both a physical and metaphysical sense I can see many readers having a hard time accepting the case that he makes if they do not consider what he has to say carefully. If the reader does buy into Clark's definition, this book is an amazing source of perspective on how we as human beings have grown in an interlocked web of biology and technology. In my opinion what Andy Clark talks about in this book has incredible application in models of education and perspective regardless of opinion on the monistic, dualist, or pluralist nature of the world.

Clark presents an argument that we do not need to implant microchips or electronic prostheses in our body to become Cyborgs, - We are already Cyborgs. The argument is based in our natural ability to use tools and technics to enhance our capabilities for movement, cognition and perception. The book is easy to read and draws upon research from the fields of robotics, cognitive science, neuroscience, cybernetics, dynamic systems theory, feminist theory, cognitive anthropology and english litterature studies. The fact that he draws upon such diverse fields of research does not reduce the logic or persuasiveness of his arguments, but rather show the interdisciplinary basis for the book. The breadth of the arguments' basis is a major plus with this book, showing that the interplay between humans and technology are not merely technical but also something which changes who we are and how we understand our selves.

Clark is new and inventive in his theories on the natural born cyborg. Since we all use technology so smoothly and since it is integrated into our lives to such an extent, we are all cyborgs in one fashion or another. This book is excellent and will have you questioning who you really are. Clark provides creative and easy to understand illustrations to help the reader further understand his points.

Most of the information in this book is useful if it is your first time trying to find information on the internet such as background on an indvidual or company. Still helpful as a guide if you cannot remember where to look.

This book has long held a cherished space on my bookcase, and it just keeps getting better. With the 700 page third edition, authors Carole Levitt and Mark Rosch have outdone themselves in collecting sources for everything to doing background checks on employees to doing competitive intelligence - and everything in between. While it is invaluble for lawyers, anyone can benfit from using this book - and the language is plain English, not legalese. The book is user-friendly, with lots of screen shots, and comes with a CD-ROM so you can click on hyperlinks without typing in URLs. All in all, this is a terrific compendium of Internet research sources - bravo!
