Most parenting books take a positive outlook on children. Parents know better. Breakwell takes a more cynical view of children and parenting, which is good because the Zombie Apocalypse is no time for Pollyannas.This book is chock full of useful* information** that you'll need when hell is upon us. Chapters include a list of dos and don'ts, along with charts and tables so that you know it is a Very Serious Bookâ„¢. It also has some funny, poorly-drawn comics in case words are too much for you to handle.The worst may never happen, but if it does, you'll be glad you read this book.

I laughed so friggin' hard at this book I'm sure I got looks while I was reading it on the bus. But I didn't notice because I was laughing too hard. I've already bought a copy of this for my Mom! Yes, some of the jokes rely on sitcom family stereotypes (the "inept dad" stereotype being the predominant one). And yes, I don't have any kids myself. However, the humor of there is so much humor based in truth. Anyone who's spent any time with any kids knows the truth of the dangers of a temper tantrum!My favorite part about this book is how it covers so many things that other zombie lore glosses over. The idea that disposable diapers will be a new form of currency rings very true. Plus, how many other zombie stories talk about how children are just inherently good at finding dangerous things? "It takes skill to make an inert wooden crib spontaneously burst into flames, but if anyone can do it, it's a six-month-old." That's why there are so many warning labels on toys. That's why being a parent in the zombie apocalypse is so dangerous for all parties!But the book doesn't spend the whole time complaining. There's actually some good advice in here. Like how most guidebooks would tell you to remove a staircase and use a retractable ladder to keep the second floor zombie free. Breakwell reminds you that carrying a baby, plus loot, means you're not climbing up that ladder. He also talks about how escaping from zombies, with your family intact, is more about situational awareness than actual speed. Then there's the chapter on punishments where he talks about punishment only being effective if the kid understands why they're in trouble.Some of the best parts of this book are about using your children to your advantage. Using their natural talent to create messes to make your house an obstacle course for zombie or looter. Using their smaller size to help you loot more places (not to mention their enthusiasm at getting to take home whatever they want). They also come with some very useful accessories, like strollers and toys that can be used as weapons. Like a mini-van that can still play DVDs even after the house has lost power.I absolutely loved this book. I shared some lines with my Mom and she wanted a copy. There are cartoons, charts and other visuals and the book is short so it's easy to stay engaged the entire time.

Twitter celebrity, amateur dad and professional writer doesn't give himself enough credit. He's clearly a professional dad too! If there's something you didn't know about parenthood or even if you did, this book is for YOU. You've NEVER experienced the Zombie Apocalypse. YET! Neither has James but he's what your'e not - PREPARED. And willing to share much needed insight, details, graphs, tables and lists of Do's and Don'ts because you will have NO time to think when the zombies strike, as zombies are prone to. Best of all? The writing style is easy, breezy and light so you won't even know you're preparing for the zombie apocalypse. But lo and behold, you will have prepared! Even the Centers for Disease Control with their presumably helpful tips in the event of a zombie apocalypse don't cover all the behaviors and logistics that James does. Neither does the Department of Homeland Security. And they won't be around to save you, only you will IF you've read THIS book. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I state that the survival of the species depends on this one book. If you're not a parent, get some kids NOW! There won't be any time during the apocalypse to borrow some. The closest you'll get to is hoping people you know have passed on and left kids behind and we know that doesn't come without it's own risks. The adults will likely be zombies first. Kids are your insurance. As is this book. What I found most helpful were the flowcharts because they help you visualize what you should do in a logical fashion and not the erratic manner in which your mind will race when the zombiecalypse is upon us. And get you killed. If, like me, you are in the nation's capital, you've already seen the signs. Oh, it's coming! I'd pay 99c for an app with the flowcharts alone. The U.K. may pay 99p which can only be great for America, what with the exchange rate and all. Canada might have to pay 9.99 for the app - if they ever figure out an exchange rate. Meanwhile, the book is a steal when you realize your insurance will NOT work, immigration is the least of your worries and there are none of the conveniences you've let yourself become accustomed to. The helpful tips in this book will be all you've got and not a moment too soon. What are you waiting for? Don't become a zombie and don't let your kids turn into miniature zombies too. Those who've read the book will be equipped to take you out. And that may not be how you'd hoped to go.

Tears rolled down my cheeks as I finished this book, but not because of the tragedy of Bauby's illness. I was filled with gratitude for the loving gift to the world that this slim book is. It is not at all what I expected after seeing Julian Schnabel's movie. Which is not to criticize the movie, but the book itself is something very different. It is a sensitive, humorous, and beautifully written reflection that conveys Bauby's appreciation for life--before his illness and even after it. His quick and nimble mind, the butterfly, roams freely, lighting on his memories, his loves, people who touched him, evoking the preciousness of experience.

Jean-Dominique Bauby, a 43 year old French man, who was the editor chief of Elle magazine in France, wrote this book with his eyelid. He suffered a stroke that caused him to lose the ability to control or move his entire body but one eye lid. His intellect was intact, and he could hear and see well. This condition is called locked-in syndrome, because the person is literally locked inside of his own body. A French phonoaudiologist taught Bauby how to "talk" using his eye lid, so he could communicate with the health team that was trying to help him. His close friends and family also learned how to understand this new way of talking. Bauby went on to dictate this book with his eyelid while one of his therapists wrote it down on paper. It is a beautiful story of how amazing the human mind is. How hard it is to have a perfect intelligent mind imprisoned in a broken body. Above all, it teaches us a lesson of how friendship and companionship are much more important than we seem to treat it. It teaches me a lot, one of the things is not taking life for granted as something like this could happen at anytime and i wouldn't know or have any plans for it. Another one is seeing the will that man takes to survive and how strong the man is to keep pushing no matter how hard things get to me it seems like an impossible task but somehow he still does it. It's a must read book, it's very uplifting to see his spirit even tho hes been through things all of us couldn't even imagine the struggles he went through.

My son started reading this to me while I was in the hospital with a massive brain hemorrhage. Mine was luckily not in the brain stem so I do not have locked-in syndrome. At any rate, it was too soon for me, too close to the uncertainty I was facing in my own life. Now, after a year and a half, I came back to it and, luckily, I was able to read it for myself and not rely on others.The book is amazing. Bauby is a much stronger and more philosophical person than I am. He has a rich internal life that he uses to sustain himself, along with vivid memories, the love of his family, his children, and his friends.The book is not a chronological telling of a story. It is a series of thoughts and events, things that stuck in his mind, things that elucidate his condition. They are often touching, frequently depressing, but always enlightening.The book is a quick read, but not a light one.

A very quick read. I read it in two days. Then, a few weeks later, I read it again. A very inspiring story. Completely engrossing. Considering Baubyâ€™s condition, there is a surprising amount of humor in it. And, although you cannot help but feel sympathy towards him, this is not a â€œpity party.â€ It is an appreciation of life. The movie is nearly as good as the book, and is very faithful to the book. I highly recommend both.

This book is a good start, especially to those who have studied the religious aspects of Islamic culture, but need a more in-depth understanding of how the Islamic religion has influenced legal reasoning. It is of course difficult to assess the accuracy of the book if one is not an expert on Islamic law. This reviewer is not such an expert, but found the book very readable and gained much insight into the intricacies behind Islamic legal thought. Islamic culture had a great influence on Western scientific progress, and so an interesting question is to the degree that its legal structure encouraged this influence. This book does not address this question, but its contents could be helpful in studying this influence. The book could also assist in answering the question of whether Islamic law requires stricter adherence to its precepts than American or British law. Does Islamic law require dogmatic adherence to legal precepts or can its interpretation be flexible or allow rapid changes?The author concentrates on what he calls the "formative" period of Islamic law, which he defines as the historical period where the legal system began to the point in time where the features of this system can be clearly identified. The "shape" of Islamic law, i.e. those attributes deemed essential to its identification, are determined according to the author by the presence of a complete judiciary, complete elaboration of positive legal doctrine and methodology, and the full emergence of doctrinal legal schools. Interestingly, he holds that the religious character of the law is also an essential attribute, but it must be derived from these four attributes. This implies that the Islamic religion, whether Quranic or otherwise, is not viewed as the underlying foundation of Islamic legal reasoning. There is no doubt though that the author believes that the new Islamic religion of the seventh century "generated" the legal system of today. The author's thesis is an interesting one but also difficult to justify since one must be able to disentangle the influence of other religious systems from the Islamic one.There are many surprises in the book for those just beginning their study of Islamic culture, law, and science: 1. A time period called `Haram', which was established by the Quraysh, a tribal confederation in pre-Islamic Mecca, wherein no violence was permitted. 2. Shedding light on the historical influences on Muhammad, he apparently followed to a large extent the teachings of Zayd b. `Amr, and was thus a "Hanif", i.e. a follower of the (monotheistic) religion of Hanifiyya. 3. The Quran holds that all property acquired by women during marriage are theirs exclusively. This is at odds with the common Western view of the Islamic religion that women are subjugated (but on the other hand one may argue that Quranic passages such as this one may be completed ignored by current practitioners of Islam). 4. The meaning of the word `sunan' and its ancient (pre-Islamic origins). 5. Contradictions in Quranic texts were resolved by a `theory of abrogation'. A natural question to ask here is whether this theory was in any way influenced by Greek logic. 6. The Islamic concept of "rationalism" and its antipathy to the "hadith". 7. The assertion that sunnaic practice is infallible, this infallibility arising from a consensus of jurists and not from the opinion (or "ra'y") of an individual jurist. This is to be contrasted to the practice in Western legal reasoning, wherein fallibility is considered normal and legal reasoning is considered to a large extent "defeasible." The author though discusses the `three categories of argument' that are present in Islamic legal reasoning: expert judgment, systematic reasoning on the basis of revealed texts (with a form of analogical reasoning called `qiyas') and the `istihan' which might be described rather loosely as a "commonsense" form of logical inference that yields "reasonable" results. In the same context as this discussion, Islamic law apparently had its own conflict between the "rationalists" (ahl al-ra'y) and the traditionalists (ahl al-hadith). 8. The real meaning behind the term `fatwah', this word having definitely been distorted by the Western press. 9. The concept of the `madhbab', illustrating the importance of doctrinal conformity in Islamic legal reasoning. The author argues, interestingly, that the madhbab were unique to Islamic civilization, not being influenced by any outside ideas. The author's discussion on the madhbab leads into one concerning the `imam', who in Islamic law was the only one permitted to interpret revealed texts. The imam, the author explains, arose from a process of "authority construction." All of this discussion sheds considerable light on the degree to which absolute legal authority is placed in one individual in Islamic law. 10. Most surprising of all, is that legal authority in Islamic law is considered to be solely epistemic, never residing in the state, a view which is certainly at odds with what is reported in the Western press.

Wael Hallaq prior to this Islamic legal history had written 'a history of Islamic legal *theories*'. That book had a (very) short introductory chapter: which went into the origins of the actual *law*, before the lawyers thought to make a theory of it. Here, Hallaq expands that chapter into a book in its own right.In this book's introduction, the author writes about the modern 'state of scholarship': 'to date, there has not been a single volume published that offers a history of Islamic law during the first three or four centuries of its life. At least three works have thus far appeared bearing titles that contain the designation "Origins," in one way or another associated in these same titles with "Islamic law" or "Islamic jurisprudence." None, however, can boast content that truly reflects what is implied'. Leaving aside why that embarrassment has come to pass, Hallaq is exactly right that it has been an embarrassment.I haven't studied far into the Abbasid era, at least not so far as the other reviewers here have studied. So I will aim my review of *this* book at its first few chapters, which mainly handle the Umayyads.These chapters rely upon the Tabaqat and Akhbar literature concerning judges: mainly by Waki` and Kindi; with some Ibn Hibban, Shirazi, Ibn Khallikan and others. Thence, Hallaq deduces that early Islamic law was an ad-hoc affair, growing out of Arab sharifian hukm - that is, wise elders mediating disputes between Arabs. The Qur'an was not much adhered to, let alone the Hadith; some judges could not even read. Later, the Muslims figured out that they were believers in a new world religion and, so, they professionalised the legal field. The book does well at organising this material and making it readable.Hallaq is however naive about the state of Islamic literature in the first centuries AH. First off, he accepts the Muslims' account of Muhammad and the Qur'an (pp. 19-23). I can skip those (thankfully few) pages and put up with the rest, given that most of this book concerns the mid 40s / 660s and beyond. More serious is his acceptance of pseudo-Hasan's Qadarist letter. The arguments for that letter were debunked in Michael Cook's 'Early Muslim Dogma' - back in 1981. In addition, whilst Hallaq was writing this book, Suleiman Mourad was writing his own book which debunked the letter entirely. (Does Cambridge not have email?)The index has missed some references. Sa`id b Jubayr is noted only for p. 65; the index needs to link to 60-1. Speaking of page 61, Said is there given as scribe to `Abd AllÃ¢h b. `Utba in '95 / 713'. This year was when Sa`id was *executed* - anyway "`Abd AllÃ¢h" is itself a mistake, since it should be `Ubayd AllÃ¢h b. `Abd AllÃ¢h b. `Utba. I wonder if this portion of the book was penciled in during the proof process. Elsewhere in the book, one finds an 'AbÃ» AyyÃ»b' al-Sakhtiyani who needs to be just plain AyyÃ»b. It made me worry about what might be lurking in the second half (which as I've said, I have to take his word for).Now, besides the naivete, I was impressed with the author's *knowledge*. It is extremely unlikely that Hallaq does not know of what I'd noted in the preceding para. It is more probable that they were simple typo's. My ire goes more to the editorial staff at Cambridge; it appears that they lack a grounding in the 'rijal'.Overall, I shouldn't let these problems bug me. This is a solid explanation of these critical centuries. Recommended.

I am a third of the way through J.D. Robbâ€™s newest book and am disappointed. I have read the entire series more than once and this one doesnâ€™t feel as if it was written by Robb. Very stilted and way too much narrative. I will make myself finish and may have a better opinion once done. If so, I will update my review.

I am starting to wonder if these books are actually being written by Nora Roberts or if only some of them are. This is another so-so book. It seems like the character development is not really there. This is disappointing has her last book was excellent and I thought she was coming back. I have all the books for the "In Death" series and have read several of them over multiple times and you can see the decline in character development. I think I will go back to getting them from my local library before making purchase for my collection.

This is not a book. If the reader is feeling generous it's a short story and not a very good one. The reader is actually purchasing the outline for what might have been a decent book. However, what got downloaded was a high school English lit paper that when graded would probably gotten a "D" at best. Did someone miss the Avengers Civil War? "Language". Really? Can't come up with anything original. Pathetic! Congratulations to Agent Teasdale on changing agencies. Homeland to FBI but don't dwell on it I'm sure in the next installment she will be with the NSA and old Robb couldn't actually be bothered to flesh out the character anyway. Like the author Teasdale wasn't really there.

I have to go with most reviews. Did JD Robb aka Nora Roberts really write this? It is as if her attention or mine just isn't into it anymore. I have loved JD Robb from beginning but I do feel as if her mind is more on her newest Nora Roberts novels than Eve Dallas. This last was so bland and just not interesting.

This book is boring. I'm tempted to skip to the last two chapters to find out whodunit. Since publishing her first book in 1981 Nora Roberts has written at least 225 novels. That's an average of about five books per year. Makes me wonder if she actually wrote all of them. Some are very good. "Northern Lights", "Tribute", "High Noon", "The Liar", and "The Search" are among my favorites.

I have been a fan of JD Robb/Nora Roberts since the very beginning with her Naked in Death book. And honestly, I wonder how another book in the series (48 and counting now), can still be fun and interesting to read. But here I am, just finished reading Connections In Death and I am a happy camper.It's a joy to see how these characters, whom I have come to love and respect, continue to grow and develop. I have always been a fan of Eve and Roarke and the love, respect and dynamic between them. You would think it can get old or corny, but it simply doesn't...in fact it keeps getting better. Their relationship, with each other and with their circle, deepens and matures with every telling. It is such a treat to read and be witness of it in some way.With Connections, I really liked just how the story unfolded. It was not so much the mystery but the process of solving it - the teamwork involved, and the grit that comes from doing the job. A bonus is in reading about how the family (which is how I see Eve, Roarke and their friends) pulls for one another; how characters from different books make a significant appearance and the way they all work together to help bring justice. It makes me wish that cops here and everywhere have that same dedication and love of service.All in all, I'm thrilled to still be feeling so engaged and riveted with this series. It is a testament to Ms. Roberts' (all hail the undisputed queen!) talent, dedication, creativity, commitment and hard work. She is an inspiration. What an amazing and great series...and this booking particular? It's definitely a wonderful addition. Bravo and cheers to many more!

I'm not quite sure how to rate this book. The story was great. But there wasn't any heat. No fire inside Eve,no urgency about finding killers. And with Eve being emotionally absent, there was nothing there for the others to play off of. Bring the real Eve back.

Not all of the pages have images. The pages some pages with text are on white pages. Because of that it is bot as good as the original. I might have a missprint, but I assume it was a choice. The inages that are there are good as is the story, but it is not as good as the original.

So the baby fish is asking the mommy fish questions, and everything mommy fish said was the answer I had in my head. I grew up reading rainbow fish and loving the bright colors and shiny scales. My daughter likes the original book, but prefers this one. One of her favorites

Definitely a disappointment over the original Rainbow Fish Book. The story doesnâ€™t flow and the word choices seem weird. My son isnâ€™t thrilled with this and requests the original instead.

I bought this book for my 30 year old granddaughter because Rainbow Fish has always been her favorite book. Her mother read this book when at my home and purchased it for her grandson. Jackson has a new baby sister and just graduated to a "big bed" of his own. Linda thought this would be a great addition to help him and his parents tackle going to bed issues. I look forward to the day when Amanda my granddaughter introduces her child to the Rainbow Fish books. A good snuggly, read aloud book.

5 star for precision cut papers and lovely single sided designs and colors. However, papers stink very badly and very strongly! Odor probably from ink. Had to air them out to reduce asthma trigger risk.

To start on a positive note, the prints on this paper are absolutely beautiful. The paper itself holds up well while folding and seems to hold a crease well without ripping. However, I severely underestimated how much the paper would STINK. I read several negative reviews before purchasing, all of which contained the same complaint, but I honestly thought that I had prepared myself for the average level of chemical smell that can be expected with any ink-printed product. I was wrong. To be fair, I am 18 weeks pregnant and still a little sensitive to smells. But to counteract this, I even went so far as to open up the package and allow the paper to "air out" overnight before using it. Didn't help. I've only been able to make 2 or 3 simple origami projects at a time before I need to take a break--that is how overwhelming the smell is! If you have a strong stomach or are used to strong chemical smells, this paper is beautiful and adds quite a nice effect to your finished project. But if you are even slightly smell-sensitive, I would strongly recommend avoiding this paper. I honestly couldn't concentrate while using it, and I will not be purchasing this product again.

I usually like Tuttle origami paper better than others. This particular batch of paper literally stinks. I tried to figure out if some of the designs were worse than others but the odor was too strong.All the other Tuttle origami products I have purchased are uniformly superior. I opened the Hokusai papers when they were delivered in front of a group and immediately had one each of the paper designs go to members of the group because they were so beautiful people wanted to frame them.Tuttle paper forgives a bad fold. The folded edges stay crisp and sharp. There are lots of reasons to prefer Tuttle over less expensive papers. However, these papers reek. The stench is dreadful.

Yes, the paper has a very strong odor. Yes, it's absolutely gorgeous. Yes, it's well cut. No, it's not good for multiple folds, nor does it bend or curl without tearing.

This is my new favorite origami paper! The colors are beautiful and the sheets fold nicely. Perfect for my crane project. I hope they come out with more designs like this.

As others have mentioned, it's a bit stinky. However, the images are beautiful.I like the paper but it is a bit stiff and tore easily at the tips when I made basic star boxes.I would not recommend it for an item the requires multiple folds but simple diagrams (like cranes) work up beautifully.

Pattern is on one side only with solid colors on the reverse. Instructions don't say what side to start on, so start with the solid color up for the crane! Deducted a star for the strong chemical smell of the paper.
