Review

"Happily, Donoghue is a critic who doesn’t fear slumming in the land of potboilers... Donoghue’s adroit commentary, along with her chronologically organized bibliography, makes Inseparable necessary for scholars and enlightening and often amusing for anyone else." – The New York Times Book Review"A thorough and fascinating piece of criticism, as satisfying as her fiction" – Now (Toronto)"Meticulously, even painstakingly researched... an expert and innovative analysis... chock full of interesting information, a needed footnote to the history of Western literature." – Toronto Sun"A highly enjoyable romp through literary history that reads like good journalism rather than academic textbook... Donoghue’s great skill is that she remains totally focused on her six plots through an amazingly broad time period... It has the dizzying effect of bringing something that’s always been in our shared peripheral vision – hazy and intangible until now – sharply into focus." – Xtra (Toronto)"As readable as it is rigorous... What’s so refreshing about Inseparable is that, while it’s clearly the work of a bona fide scholar... it still manages to be both witty and entertaining. The writer is like that favorite college professor who, in her genial unstuffiness, breathes the kind of life into her subject that keeps students riveted from the first word." – Edge"A thorough, intelligent researcher... a disarming, often funny historian." – San Francisco Chronicle"Emma Donoghue’s pedigree as a literary critic, novelist, scholar, and (it should go without saying) passionate reader makes her the perfect tour guide. Equally at home with Ovid and Rita Mae Brown, she is generous with her insights, providing helpful context... Brilliant, insightful, and frequently funny, Inseparable is sure to bring new readers to the world of classic literature." – The Gay and Lesbian Book Review"Thorough, scholarly and consistently entertaining" – Booklist"Indispensable" – Library Journal

From the Back Cover

Emma Donoghue, consummate scholar and novelist of astonishing originality, examines how desire between women in literature has been portrayed—from schoolgirls and vampires to runaway wives, from cross-dressing knights to contemporary murderesses. Donoghue excavates the long-obscured tradition of friendship between women, one that is surprisingly central to our cultural history. From Chaucer and Shakespeare, Sade, Balzac, Thomas Hardy and Radclyffe Hall to Agatha Christie, Patricia Highsmith and Sarah Waters, Inseparable is a landmark exploration of love between women in Western literature, and a highly entertaining investigation of the "unspeakable subject."

I loved this book, which was scholarly, witty, and incredibly engaging. In six chapters, Donaghue walks the reader through many centuries of diverse genres in Western literature, divided up into six recurring themes or motifs. I learned so much about obscure texts that I certainly wouldn't have run into on my own, and after reading this book, my own reading list for 2019 has doubled in size! Highly, highly recommend as an introduction to literature about women loving women.

Donoghue has hit the trifecta here with a literary analysis of lesbianism that is lucid, easy to understand and an indispensable resource for further reading and research."Inseparable" is broad in scope, covering over a millennium of literature, yet is admirably focused in its themes and discussion. I join others in praising the organization of the subject matter and the clear manner in which it is written. There is very little of the arcane language and abstract theorizing that mar so much literary criticism. The writing is accessible to general readers. The depth of sources that Donoghue mines for this book is amazing. The detailed notes at the end contain a treasure trove of references to hundreds of additional stories and novels, many rescued from obscurity. Not only are there hundreds of new references to lesbian texts but Donoghue has actually done some of the first translations from French to English. These sources and translations are a major public service.I'm a big fan of Donoghue's work and enjoy learning more about her, so some of the personal observations she makes add icing to the cake. How delightful to read that Donoghue `scared myself stiff' (like most of us) reading Sarah Waters' Affinity on a transatlantic flight. Or her admission that when it comes to the ongoing academic debate over essentialism v. constructionism, which "verg[es] on silliness," the premise of "Inseparable" probably marks her as an essentialist, "but I hope not a silly one."

Emma Donoghue has collected six themes which have formed the plot templates for lesbian fiction from the Renaissance onward. They are Travesties (think man dressed as woman attracting a woman, or woman dressed as man doing the same), Inseparables (romantic friendships that may be more), Rivals (a man and a woman vying for a woman's affection), Monsters (wicked women out to corrupt the innocent), Detection (lesbian motivation is the solution to a crime) and Out (coming out stories). In each of these chapters she gives example after example, summarizing plots, convincingly making the case that if these are not the only possible themes, they have been well worn ones. And it is here that the book truly comes into its own - as discovery is piled on discovery and a whole unknown byway of literary history is brilliantly uncovered. DH Lawrence rubs shoulders with Ariosto, Shakespeare, Henry James, Ovid, Balzac as well as the usual suspects (Radclyffe Hall, et al). Ms. Donoghue makes clear that she could care less about the gender of the author, focusing on the content of the story and how the variations tie to social history and changing attitudes to same sex love. One comment she makes early illustrates the insight she brings to these stories: she believes endings are overrated. Time and again societal norms control how authors tie up their story. But the more interesting, and more telling ideas come before. In this fascinating, compulsively readable book, she presents the vast panorama of what came before.

Whether the relationship is sexual or passionately platonic, the bonds between women can be unbreakable. This is a quite good (and a little exhausting) survey of the variety of women's relationships as presented in literature. It's probably a bit too academic for a general audience but a must have for women's or lesbian studies.

haven't finished yet-a little slow.

How were women's relationships depicted in plays, dramas, poetry, and novels before the 21st Century? In "Inseparable: Desire Between Women in Literature," Emma Donoghue reveals that, although rarely pointed out, authors have shown "desire between women" as accidental, mildly erotic, predatory, thoughtful, and, of course, lusty and lesbian. Both male and female authors of diverse sexual orientations have acknowledged these desires, making the attraction between women an identifiable plot point for the last 1000 years.Donoghue's well researched book defines six plot motifs and then uses a wide variety of works to demonstrate her categories. She uses well known authors (Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, D. H. Lawerence, and Virginia Woolf); less well read but identifiable authors (Chaucer, Ovid in translation, Wilkie Collins, and Anthony Trollope), and some obscure authors (you'll have your own list of authors to research) to round out her categories. I liked this book because it was scholarly but made its arguments with non-academic prose, but I recognize that "Inseparable" is not an easy read and, because of its breadth of knowledge, can sometimes seem to wander.Emma Donoghue was born in Ireland, educated in Ireland and England, and now lives in Canada. She is a novelist, short story writer, playwright, and literary historian. Among her many novels are the popular "Slammerkin" (which takes places in the mid-1700's), the well reviewed "The Sealed Letter" (which takes place in the 1860's), and the contemporary novel "Room," which was short-listed for the 2010 Man Booker Prize and is currently a best seller. Her historical analysis "Inseparable" was published last year before Room exploded into popular consciousness. After a short introduction, the six main chapters of "Inseparable" describe and offer examples of different types of desire between women.Chapter One, "Travesties," shows examples of cross-dressing that result in unintentional same-sex desire. When women cross-dress, she calls the effect "The Female Bridegroom" (think Yentl). When men cross dress, the result is "The Male Amazon" (think Tootsie). Because much of this chapter relies on her earliest sources, such as translations of Ovid, much of the discussion requires lengthy plot descriptions that can obscure some of the most interesting information.Chapter Two, "Inseparables," portrays the situation when two passionate friends must struggle to stay together. She begins with an eye-opening analysis of the Biblical story of Ruth. A major topic of this chapter centers on jealousies, including cases when two close women are turned into rivals and one woman allows the other to join a man in marriage.Chapter Three, "Rivals," covers the situation when both a man and a woman compete for a woman's heart. This investigation includes Choderlos de Laclos' "Dangerous Liaisons" and Henry James' "The Bostonians."Chapter Four, "Monsters," describes relationships in which a wicked woman tries to seduce and destroy an innocent woman, including sex fiends and unknown enemies. This discussion also includes ghosts and Joseph Sheridan le Fanu's "Carmilla," who turns out to be a vampire.Chapter Five, "Detection," includes examples of female detectives and cases when the discovery of a crime turns out to be a same-sex desire. The authors presented in this chapter include Agatha Christie and Sarah Waters (with whom Donoghue shares a number of interesting characteristics, as they are both British and often write heavily researched historical novels with lesbian themes).Chapter Six, "Out," outlines plots in which a woman's life is changed when she realizes that she loves her own sex. Unlike some of the earlier chapters, most of these stories are (out of historical necessity) modern. This chapter includes enlightening discussions of Lillian Hellman's "The Children's Hour" and Patricia Highsmith's "The Price of Salt."Each chapter includes several interesting illustrations, taken from books and book jackets, that add to the textual examples and offer pleasant fuel to keep the academic tone at bay.For general readers, I highly recommend Donoghue's historical lesbian-themed novels "Slammerkin" and "The Sealed Letter," as well as her imaginative new novel "Room." For readers looking for an interesting but slightly academic history of women's desires in literature, "Inseparable" offers a clear view to which you can add your own examples. After you've read it, you'll pull "Inseparable" off the shelf, either physically or mentally, to identify the previously unrecognized varieties of women's relationships and passions that continue to appear in novels, movies, and TV shows today. This Is How You Lose Her, by Junot Díaz

Review

“Junot Díaz writes in an idiom so electrifying and distinct it’s practically an act of aggression, at once enthralling, even erotic in its assertion of sudden intimacy… [It is] a syncopated swagger-step between opacity and transparency, exclusion and inclusion, defiance and desire… His prose style is so irresistible, so sheerly entertaining, it risks blinding readers to its larger offerings. Yet he weds form so ideally to content that instead of blinding us, it becomes the very lens through which we can see the joy and suffering of the signature Díaz subject: what it means to belong to a diaspora, to live out the possibilities and ambiguities of perpetual insider/outsider status.” –The New York Times Book Review "Nobody does scrappy, sassy, twice-the-speed of sound dialogue better than Junot Díaz. His exuberant short story collection, called This Is How You Lose Her, charts the lives of Dominican immigrants for whom the promise of America comes down to a minimum-wage paycheck, an occasional walk to a movie in a mall and the momentary escape of a grappling in bed." –Maureen Corrigan, NPR “Exhibits the potent blend of literary eloquence and street cred that earned him a Pulitzer Prize… Díaz’s prose is vulgar, brave, and poetic.” –O Magazine “Searing, irresistible new stories… It’s a harsh world Díaz conjures but one filled also with beauty and humor and buoyed by the stubborn resilience of the human spirit.” –People “Junot Díaz has one of the most distinctive and magnetic voices in contemporary fiction: limber, streetwise, caffeinated and wonderfully eclectic… The strongest tales are those fueled by the verbal energy and magpie language that made Brief Wondrous Life so memorable and that capture Yunior’s efforts to commute between two cultures, Dominican and American, while always remaining an outsider.” –Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times  “These stories… are virtuosic, command performances that mine the deceptive, lovelorn hearts of men with the blend of tenderness, comedy and vulgarity of early Philip Roth. It's Díaz's voice that's such a delight, and it is every bit his own, a melting-pot pastiche of Spanglish and street slang, pop culture and Dominican culture, and just devastating descriptive power, sometimes all in the same sentence.” –USA Today  “Impressive… comic in its mopiness, charming in its madness and irresistible in its heartfelt yearning.” –The Washington Post "The dark ferocity of each of these stories and the types of love it portrays is reason enough to celebrate this book. But the collection is also a major contribution to the short story form... It is an engrossing, ambitious book for readers who demand of their fiction both emotional precision and linguistic daring." –NPR “The centripetal force of Díaz’s sensibility and the slangy bar-stool confidentiality of his voice that he makes this hybridization feel not only natural and irresistible, but inevitable, the voice of the future… [This is How You Lose Her] manages to be achingly sad and joyful at the same time. Its heart is true, even if Yunior’s isn’t.” –Salon “[A] propulsive new collection… [that] succeeds not only because of the author's gift for exploring the nuances of the male… but because of a writing style that moves with the rhythm and grace of a well-danced merengue.” –Seattle Times    “In Díaz’s magisterial voice, the trials and tribulations of sex-obsessed objectifiers become a revelation.” –The Boston Globe “Scooch over, Nathan Zuckerman. New Jersey has bred a new literary bad boy… A.” –Entertainment Weekly “Ribald, streetwise, and stunningly moving—a testament, like most of his work, to the yearning, clumsy ways young men come of age.” –Vogue “[An] excellent new collection of stories… [Díaz is] an energetic stylist who expertly moves between high-literary storytelling and fizzy pop, between geek culture and immigrant life, between romance and high drama.” –IndieBound “Taken together, [these stories’] braggadocio softens into something much more vulnerable and devastating. The intimacy and immediacy… is not just seductive but downright conspiratorial… A heartbreaker.” –The Daily Beast "Díaz manages a seamless blend of high diction and low, of poetry and vulgarity… Look no further for home truths on sex and heartbreak." –The Economist “This collection of stories, like everything else [Díaz has] written, feels vital in the literal sense of the word. Tough, smart, unflinching, and exposed, This is How You Lose Her is the perfect reminder of why Junot Díaz won the Pulitzer Prize… [He] writes better about the rapid heartbeat of urban life than pretty much anyone else." –The Christian Science Monitor “Filled with Díaz’s signature searing voice, loveable/despicable characters and so-true-it-hurts goodness.” –Flavorwire “Díaz writes with subtle and sharp brilliance… He dazzles us with his language skills and his story-making talents, bringing us a narrative that is starkly vernacular and sophisticated, stylistically complex and direct… A spectacular read.” –Minneapolis Star-Tribune "[This is How You Lose Her] has maturity in content, if not in ethical behavior… Díaz’s ability to be both conversational and formal, eloquent and plainspoken, to say brilliant things Trojan-horsed in slang and self-deprecation, has a way of making you put your guard completely down and be effected in surprising and powerful ways." –The Rumpus “As tales of relationship redemption go, each of the nine relatable short stories in Junot Díaz's consummate collection This Is How You Lose Her triumphs… Through interrogative second-person narration and colloquial language peppered with Spanish, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author authentically captures Junior's cultural and emotional dualities.” –Metro “Searing, sometimes hilarious, and always disarming… Readers will remember why everyone wants to write like Díaz, bring him home, or both. Raw and honest, these stories pulsate with raspy ghetto hip-hop and the subtler yet more vital echo of the human heart.” –Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Díaz’s standout fiction remains pinpoint, sinuous, gutsy, and imaginative… Each taut tale of unrequited and betrayed love and family crises is electric with passionate observations and off-the-charts emotional and social intelligence… Fast-paced, unflinching, complexly funny, street-talking tough, perfectly made, and deeply sensitive, Díaz’s gripping stories unveil lives shadowed by prejudice and poverty and bereft of reliable love and trust. These are precarious, unappreciated, precious lives in which intimacy is a lost art, masculinity a parody, and kindness, reason, and hope struggle to survive like seedlings in a war zone.” –Booklist (starred review) “Díaz’s third book is as stunning as its predecessors. These stories are hard and sad, but in Díaz’s hands they also crackle.” –Library Journal (starred review) “Magnificent… an exuberant rendering of the driving rhythms and juicy Spanglish vocabulary of immigrant speech… sharply observed and morally challenging.” –Kirkus “A beautifully stirring look at ruined relationships and lost love—and a more than worthy follow-up to [Díaz’s] 2007 Pulitzer winner, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.” –Bookpage "In This Is How You Lose Her, Díaz writes with subtlety and grace, once again demonstrating his remarkable facility for developing fully-realized and authentic characters with an economical rawness... Díaz skillfully portrays his protagonist so vividly, and with so  much apparent honesty, that Yunior’s voice comes across with an immediacy that never once feels inauthentic." –California Literary Review "Díaz continues to dazzle with his dynamite, street-bruised wit. The bass line of this collection is a thumpingly raw and sexual foray into lives that claw against poverty and racism. It is a wild rhythm that makes more vivid the collection’s heart-busted steadiness." –Dallas Morning News

This was my first foray into Junot Diaz and it was as painful as the title suggests. It's also pretty self referential which also stings.Junior's relationships with the women in his life is a giant billboard for how people get trapped in the grooves and struggle to change in spite of their desire to do so. There's also an element of the external witness who sees Yunior's train coming vs. the internal Yunior who wanders along looking only at the tracks. He's always surprised each time he gets hit.I really loved reading this book. There are some really funny laugh out loud moments and quite a lot of times I was sucking air through my teeth hoping for a different outcome and knowing it wouldn't change. The book is also beautifully crafted with sharp, sharp descriptive and beautiful images of the world Yunior inhabits. I especially loved the descriptions of the women in Yuniors' life but all of the other characters, in particular his brother, are alive with depth.I struggled with the Spanish along the way and ended up using google translate on my phone to read my iPad which worked well. Understanding the Spanish added a lot so I recommend taking the time to do that.I'm looking forward to reading more Junot Diaz. Thank you as always to my friend for the recommendation. <3

This novel was AMAZING!! The author did a great job of creating Yunior as a very likeable, but troubled character. Through writing techniques, such as changing the point of view each chapter, readers are able to understand each character personally and also how each character views one another. For me, however, while most of the time I liked the switches in perspective, it a lot of the time wasn’t clear who was speaking until the end of the chapter. I think the author should have clarified when the speaker changed and to who it changed to, then it wouldn’t have caused as much confusion for me. He might have been doing that on purpose, so you had to figure out who was talking and their relations to the other characters, but I personally did not know who was speaking in many of the chapters. The ongoing conflict in the book that Yunior, his brother, and his dad having relationship and commitment issues helps to shape the theme that relationships require hard work and more than just love in order to be successful. This is very well exhibited in the last chapter, “The Cheater’s Guide to Love,” when Yunior is head over heels for a girl and then cheats on her anyways despite his love for her. The author also uses an interesting diction choice of mixing of spanish and english throughout the book to portray the importance of background, culture, and the immense role that it plays in the characters lives. Having a spanish to english dictionary nearby is definitely a must when reading because the spanish words pop up during significant moments in the book, which again emphasizes the thematic topic of cultural importance. A symbol that is brought up throughout the book is snow. Snow is mostly mentioned when Yunior is a young boy and is wanting to go play in the snow, and his dad won’t let him. I believe the repetition of snow throughout the novel is to represent wanting something they can’t have. Wanting things the characters don’t have and not being content with what they do have is another major theme. Although this theme is mostly related to relationships and heartbreak, it is also portrayed when talking about the hardships, but also the benefits of moving to the United States. Diaz also uses a very unique syntax technique of not putting in any quotation marks. I loved this so much when I was reading because at times I wasn’t sure whether the characters were speaking out loud or if it was the thoughts in their head. I think this gave me a chance as a reader to interpret some actions and made me wonder and think about what was happening much more. Overall, it was an amazing book with a riveting plot and great, compelling descriptive language that made it impossible to put down.

This book has a wrap around which explicates the three short stories in the center. Diaz’s writing style remains enticingly conversational. You feel like you are listening to someone’s personal story, but as a reader it is not a character you really want to embody. His ‘love map’ has been seriously screwed up because of the examples his father and brother have demonstrated with the women in their lives. In fact, no man the main character interacts with has a healthy, loving, faithful relationship with any woman in their lives. Without spoiling the plot, as the wrap around plot with the main characters continues the chronological plot, Yunior’s physical body begins breaking down after he destroys his relationship with his fiancé. In the end, the half life of love is infinite. This is an easy read, but I couldn’t help but wonder, even though this book was written well before the ‘me too’ movement, how these seemingly semi-autobiographical characters, reflect on the allegations leveled at Diaz by female students and interns. I enjoy the voice. I don’t like the way men from the Dominican Republic are all portrayed as misogynistic users of women.

I had heard all about this author and this was the first book of his that I read. I was caught off guard at first by how 'colloquial' the language was. But because of that, the story was very real, raw, sincere, touching. Throughout the book I was left wondering what portion of the book was autobiography, memoir, fiction, or fiction loosely based on reality. I still don't know the answer, but I haven't dug too much to find out because in some ways I think it is better to be left debating with myself regarding where I think it falls along the spectrum. I would definitely recommend the book to others as an example of modern high quality literature rooted outside of the 'mainstream' (read: whitewashed) literary circles.

From the Back Cover

The definitive guide to Enterprise and Carrier Metro Ethernet applications* Discover the latest developments in metro networking, Ethernet, and MPLS services and what they can do for your organization* Learn from the easy-to-read format that enables networking professionals of all levels to understand the concepts* Gain from the experience of industry innovator and best-selling Cisco Press author, Sam Halabi, author of Internet Routing ArchitecturesMetro networks will emerge as the next area of growth for the networking industry and will represent a major shift in how data services are offered to businesses and residential customers. The metro has always been a challenging environment for delivering data services because it has been built to handle the stringent reliability and availability needs for voice. Carriers will have to go through fundamental shifts to equip the metro for next-generation data services demanded by enterprise customers and consumers. This is not only a technology shift, but also a shift in the operational and business model that will allow the incumbent carriers to transform the metro to offer enhanced data services.Metro Ethernet from Cisco Press looks at the deployment of metro data services from a holistic view. It describes the current metro, which is based on TDM technology, and discusses the drivers and challenges carriers will face in transforming the metro to address data services.Metro Ethernet discusses the adoption of metro Ethernet services and how that has led carriers to the delivery of metro data services. With a changing mix of transport technologies, the book then examines current and emerging trends, and delves into the role of virtual private networks (VPN), virtual private local area networks (VLAN), virtual private LAN services (VPLS), traffic engineering, and MPLS and Generalized MPLS (GMPLS).

Sam Halabi did it again. This is a rare and very informative book on Metro Ethernet developments. It has very clear explanation on all the subjects.I particularly like the VPLS section. One thing tough, the HVPLS section needs to have more coverage on real world scenario.

This an excellent book to get the best knowledge of how Metro Ethernet topology is configured which includes DWDM, ADM, GPLS, MPLS and much more.....great reference and as expected, well written.

This book is very very old. out of date

Sam Halabi's book is described on the cover as "the definitive guide to enterprise and carrier metro Ethernet applications". As you would expect from the author of the justly-celebrated "Internet Routing Architectures", Halabi does a superb job.Chapter 1 reviews traditional TDM ways of getting to the customer. With traditional SDH/SONET-based transmission, carriers pay a high price in operational complexity, cost and provisioning delay. Ethernet's advantages include fast provisioning, fine-grained bandwidth granularity (inherent in packet technologies) and a scalability from kbps to Gbps. The customer also expects a lower cost service, although carrier pricing remains volatile, partially from fear of cannibalising their existing connectivity revenues.Chapter 2 looks at metro Ethernet technologies. Carriers with already deployed SONET/SDH networks naturally consider how to use them efficiently to carry Ethernet. The problem of mapping continuously-scalable packet flows into the lumpy SONET/SDH bandwidth hierarchy is well-described. Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) is becoming an increasingly popular adaptation layer between Ethernet (and other packet protocols such as PPP, Fiber Channel, FICON/ESCON) and SDH/SONET, implemented via the evolution of SONET/SDH devices into Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs). The bandwidth mismatches are addressed via Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS).Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH as just described is a pure transport mechanism. To create an Ethernet analogue of add-drop multiplexing and to support traffic aggregation, L2 switching functionality needs to be added to the basic SDH/SONET box. (This is a well-worn path for transmission vendors - the same model was proposed for ATM). Different customers' Ethernet streams need to be identifiable, and carrier VLAN tagging is a possibility, although MPLS provides a more scalable solution, discussed later. In L2 switching in ring topologies, bandwidth fairness and efficient protection switching is difficult to achieve. The new "Resilient Packet Ring" (RPR) MAC protocol was developed to address these issues, and RPR can be run over GFP, and therefore supported in SONET/SDH devices which understand the RPR protocol. Of course, one can dispense with SONET/SDH equipment altogether (especially if you are a new operator and never installed it). Halabi briefly touches on the deployment and management of Gigabit Ethernet switches with direct interconnect.Chapter 3 is devoted to metro Ethernet services. After a brisk tutorial on L2 switching, MAC learning, flooding, broadcast/multicast, VLANs and spanning tree protocol, Halabi gets down to the services. The Metro Ethernet Forum has defined two Ethernet service types: Ethernet Line Service (ELS) and Ethernet LAN service (E-LAN). Point-to-point vs. multipoint-to-multipoint, or transport vs. transport-and-switching if you prefer. ELS issues include traffic and performance management, class-of-service, VLAN support. Additional issues for E-LAN services focus on mechanisms for customer-separation, address-management and scalability.Halabi identifies a number of issues along the way: with the VLAN tag length restricting operators to 4,096 customer-id values, operational services cannot scale; Ethernet does not have the kind of embedded OA&M facilities which allow carrier services such as SONET/SDH to be monitored and provisioned; the spanning tree protocol for loop-prevention does not scale and is inefficient; VPN configuration is hard to scale.Chapter 4: "hybrid L2 and L3 IP/MPLS networks" unveils the solution. In a nutshell it is to adapt Ethernet to MPLS at the network edge, and use the power of BGP/MPLS VPN technology to scale the service. Halabi starts by reviewing standard L3 VPNs, both IP tunnels (GRE, not IPsec) and BGP/MPLS rfc 2547.He then notes that Ethernet can be carried over MPLS via the IETF Pseudowire standard - this is fine for Ethernet Line Services. An E-LAN service such as Virtual Private LAN Service requires more work from the CE/PE devices, however. Specifically, the CEs think they are talking to an Ethernet switch on their link to the PE. The PE needs the additional functionality of a VLAN switch, and maps a specific MPLS label to each VLAN on a per-customer basis. This "broadcast domain" identification inner label is then augmented by an outer traffic-engineering label to forward traffic to the correct destination PE across the Service Provider network. Halabi describes in detail the mechanisms, which are similar to rfc 2547 VPNs at L3.In practice there are still scaling issues, and the concept of "Decoupled Transparent LAN Service" is introduced. This creates an additional customer-premises PE which specialises in L2 MAC address management and customer segmentation, while the network POP PE can specialise in L3 MPLS tunnel and connectivity management. Given the detailed technical treatment, this is one of the harder chapters in the book. However, this is the last chapter actually devoted to Ethernet. With Chapter 5, we enter part II of the book, which is more focused on traffic engineering and GMPLS. This chapter is a fast review of MPLS for traffic engineering of IP networks. Chapter 6 extends this discussion to cover the details of RSVP-TE for LSP establishment, specifically for fast-reroute. In Chapter 7 and the final Chapter 8, we see how MPLS (specifically GMPLS) can be used as a generalised control plane for virtual circuit management in the SONET/SDH and the optical layers. The Internet is awash with white papers on all aspects of metro Ethernet. This book was published, by Cisco Press, in September 2003 so it's hot off the press. But sections still appear to be slightly dated in what is an incredibly fast-moving area. Why buy it? Because Halabi knows what he's talking about, and gets down into the detail of how everything works with great intellectual clarity. Although it can be hard to see the wood from the trees in this book, it is the ideal "in one place" reference for both services and technologies for carrier Ethernet. I consider chapters 5-8 as an MPLS bonus, as they actually have nothing specifically to do with carrier Ethernet.

I recently read the book titled "Metro Ethernet", authored by the legendary Sam Halabi. ISBN: 158705096X. Let me be the first to say that this title lives up to Mr. Halabi's high standards for delivering top quality information. Sam Halabi does an excellent job of taking away the smoke and mirrors of the often misunderstood world of Metro Ethernet. This book explains, in superb detail, every way to skin the Metro Ethernet cat. The author does it in a way that helps to give the reader a complete understanding of a particular application of Metro Ethernet without dropping the reader off the deep-end of this hybrid technology. The book is organized very well. The author has taken a crawl, walk, run approach to the layout of this book. The introduction alone gives the reader a great road map of the book, so the reader can pinpoint a given topic, rather quickly. In the past I've had to rely heavily on the Index to provide pointers to a given topic, but the Introduction of this book is a great reference. Along with the Authors previous book, "Internet Routing", the author waste little ink. Each topic is clear, concise and to the point. He's taken a lot of information from several sources and compiled the information in an easy to understand text. The illustrations help out a lot with capturing the complexity of the many different Metro Ethernet Architectures. One thing I liked about the book is that the Author gives the reader insight or background as to why a certain application of Metro Ethernet was designed and where it is likely to be applied. This book is best suited for Telco carrier personnel or Enterprise personnel at any level. Companies that are looking for different strategies for their Metro Area Networking requirements will find this title very useful. For Enterprise Customers, this book is a great place to start prior to calling in a consultant or discussing services offered by a service provider. Consultants will likely find this title very valuable to understand the complexities and furthermore gain the ability to transform the complex lingo into something palatable for a non-technical audience/customer. Telco support personnel would benefit a great deal by understanding what their existing offers are or perhaps alternatives to their current offerings. The book is well rounded for a large target audience. A general understanding of the technologies discussed in this book is not really necessary, because the characteristics of the technologies discussed in the book are not implemented in the traditional sense. It does help to have an understanding of the technologies to be able to contrast the difference in the applications of Metro Ethernet. There is a great deal of information that covers the use of MPLS in conjunction with Metro Ethernet. The sections covering MPLS get a little more technical and may lose some individuals that are not technically savvy, however the concepts are clearly stated. There is another title that covers information about Metro Ethernet technology offered by Cisco Press titled "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" by Dave Warren, Dennis Hartmann. Since Metro Ethernet is one of many technologies covered in this title, it doesn't have as much to offer on the subject of Metro Ethernet as the title "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi. The chapters in the title "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" covering Metro Ethernet, focuses more on implementation details and the configuration of Metro Ethernet in Cisco equipment. If your looking for detailed information about Metro Ethernet, I would recommend the book "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi. This is one reader that is thankful Sam Halabi chose to write another book.

This is a fantastic overview if this is your first contact with the metro ethernet. However, it may be not enough for techies willing to find an in depth description of the protocols involved. Moreover, it forgets some outstanding proposals in Layer 2 point-to-point transport over MPLS networks, like the ones from Kireeti Kompella, even though it comprises Kompella's BGP approach to VPLS. In a nutshell, if you don't know almost anything about metro ethernet, this is a 'must have' book.
