I bought this guide prior to a trip to the Outer Banks and, after looking through it for about an hour, decided it wasn't even worth packing for the trip. For the most part, the book doesn't provide "insider" information about attractions, accommodations, restaurants, excursions, etc. in the Outer Banks. Rather, the book just lists the providers of these services along with brief explanations that sound as if they were written by the providers themselves. Honestly, this book is less useful than the free advertisements that you can pick up outside any grocery store in the Outer Banks, because at least the advertisements are up to date and they also include coupons.When I buy a guidebook, I want it to tell me what differentiates the 10 different Italian restaurants, 5 different wild horse tours, or 15 different vacation home rental companies in town or at least recommend 2 or 3 good ones. Unfortunately, all I really got from Insiders' Guide to North Carolina's Outer Banks was a ringing endorsement of nearly every establishment the book mentions. The last guidebook I bought for a vacation was The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed and it blew this Outer Banks guidebook away.I do not recommend this book.

Gave me insight to where we were going and about the history of the region. Has a lot of info but jumps around somewhat. Decent guide for vacation.

I have the 27th edition and figured I needed to update to the 30th. This will be our 3rd year renting a house in the outer banks and this has everything right at your fingertips. Great book to take along too because we didn't have great internet reception last year and it is so much easier to look in here.

I just got back from the Outer Banks and found this book extremely helpful during my vacation there. It gives you many points of interest and activities that you may not have discovered without it. Certainly worth it.

And why was it only by sheer chance the frame job against Paulette Cooper was uncovered?And most of all I want to know why is this "church" not only still getting away with these kinds of activities toady, but as a 501(c)3 tax exempt entity to boot?Spend any time at all looking over Mr. Ortega's web page at http://tonyortega.org and it's obvious these types of activities are still going on. The shame is they are using tax free money to do it with, and that needs to stop.I highly recommend reading "Scandal of Scientology" before reading this book, then you'll understand why the Guardians Office, now called the Office of Special Affair, freaked out the way they did.And engrossing, disturbing, and detailed look into the underbelly of Scientology. And an amazing story of the "Unbreakable" lady who lived through it. Highly recommended, and can't wait for the movie.

Wow! Just! Wow!This is an incredible story, and told in such a masterful way. The down side, is that this is a real life thriller, with real life consequences for those who were/are stalked by this dangerous, fanatical organization.

Mr. Ortega brings us a true story of the horrid ordeals one woman suffered at the unrepentant, morally scrupulous and notorious Church of Scientology. While there are a multitude of other cast and characters intertwining this tale it offers a broad picture of what one "spiritual" organizations went through to ruin beyond belief the life of a journalist presenting a true story. It is rich in detail and facts. It also begs the question from any objective reader on why a church would, should or could operate this way.It's an engrossing read and highly suggested for anyone who wants to know more about Scientology, and a true story of pain, perseverance and not backing down from a truth that needs to be known.I was horrified what this woman went through and survived. Mr. Ortega did a remarkable job of capturing every nuisance. There are such extreme moments of incredulity, emotion and questions of how this can still be happening to others in one form or another. I hope all who have the slightest interest in injustice, among many other topics, read this and start asking questions yourself. A great read for more reasons than this readers heart can enumerate.

In the fall of 2008, noted classicist Mary Beard gave the Sather (Classical) Lectures at Berkeley. Those lectures, and five years subsequent thinking over what she said there led to this book, and a fine piece of scholarship it is. Starting from the question, what made Romans laugh, she discusses a range of topics: what is laughter for? And what is humor –joking among its most prominent forms—for? Especially what role did joking play in status and power obsessed classical Rome? How transgressive and aggressive was Roman humor and laughter at different times during the imperiate? How much did Roman views on the role of laughter and of humor descend from Greek views and where was it different? In the brilliant penultimate chapter she meditates on an ancient compendium of jokes, the Philogelos (it contains “some 265 jokes”), and asks: did Rome invent the idea of the joke as an exchangeable commodity? (Almost every other aspect of Roman life was commodified.)Her observations on all these topics are carefully considered, weighed with ambiguity at times as is fitting on the study of texts so distant in time and mores from ours, and corrupted, even lost, in their transmission from scribe to scribe. Indeed, one of the most fascinating lessons of this rich study is how complicated it is to tease meaning from ancient artifacts and thus how provisional any conclusions reached from study must be. Beard cautions other scholars to move carefully in emending or filling in content in order to make obscure texts clearer: the risk of distortion is great. (It’s already been praised in the London Times Literary Section and in the New York Review of Books.) It requires careful attention while reading: the points she makes require detailed analysis of words and passages as well as sometimes extended discussion of other scholars’ interpretations.As to the secondary literature on her chosen subject, she seems to have read virtually everything, and her grasp of the primary sources is wide, catholic and inventive. She is generous in her judgment of her peers. (Because I had the opportunity to hear him speak a few years back and later to review a book by him, I noted especially her approving treatment of Simon Critchley’s work on laughter and joking.)

Normally, dissecting what makes us laugh is as distant from humor as dissecting a human body is from cuddling. All the parts of a joke can be labelled and parsed, or the nerves can be traced to their endings in the skin, but the result merely indicate a way to look at humor or affection, thus removing you to a point distant from the reality of either state. Normally. But in Mary Beard's book, Laughter in Ancient Rome, the dissection is done with such innate wit and verve that, while we may not slap our knees and guffaw while reading this beautifully written and impeccably researched essay, we are led gently, with affection, toward a greater understanding of what makes those ancestral jokesters our absolute kin.

I am a huge Mary Beard fan in general and I only bought this book because she wrote it. She also has a very distinct writing voice and style that I think people either love or hate; I happen to love her style but I couldn't recommend this book to everyone. If you do like her style, though, this book is amazingly critical and skeptical of traditional scholarship and casts really interesting doubt on conventional wisdom. She somehow managed to write a book about humor that, far from killing jokes by analyzing them, somehow manages to be really funny in and of itself in many places. It's great.

Great book by Mary Beard, as always. Admittedly, I'm a cultural relativist, but still I think that some of the examples she cites are still funny--funnier than she thinks. The Greeks, of kinder disposition than the Romans, also had very lively humor!

I am a big fan of Mary Beard's work and the title promised an interesting contribution to our understanding of Roman life. This anticipation was further enhanced by the book jacket blurb that the work was not academic but accessible to the general reader. Unfortunately, I found the work disappointing and after a few pages of reading, I decided to skim the book to see if I couldn't find something interesting in it. Admittedly, this means the review here is limited in that I may have missed something along the way.First of all, the book relies heavily on classical literature, which, being the gospel according to the literati, may reflect an etherial perspective rather than one from the ground. On the Romans as a whole, I can make three observations. First, laughter and laughing does not appear very important to their society. This is evidenced by the fact that Latin vocabulary has few word to describe laughter. As Beard points, our own language is much richer in this regard (I will add that Arabic has a full range of words for camel, capturing their gender, color and other characteristics. This tells us that the camel was crucial to society at the time of the early development of the language). Second, irony was the the favorite tool of what humor there was among the Romans. It is reminiscent of New York humor (think about early Woody Allen films). Finally, much of the humor was directed at someone and poked fun at others. This says to me that the Romans focused on status to the degree that humor was used to belittle others. This seems to me consistent with a violent and exploitative society that accompanied Roman domination.Again, take these comments for what you will. I would, however, recommend Beard's other works (especially, SPQR and the Fires of Vesuvius), or even better, some of Beard's videos that are available on Amazon Prime for free.

This is a good book about humor in ancient Rome and Greece and how similar jokes are told today.My only disappointment was that there wasn't a compilation of the jokes in a joke book format...

this author is great. not the 1st book from mary beard i have read.

Out of the five parts of the Scott's 2018 Stamp Catalogs I have ordered through Amazon this year, this is the third order where I have only received one of the two volumes. I the case of this order, the description clearly states this part (Vol 6) consists of two volumes.

I've been collecting postage stamps since 1955 and update my catalogs every 4 years. Thanks

I'm glad I got mine when I did for 24.95.Anyway, Thee Psychick Bible is a good—and cheaper—substitute, albeit without the great pictures.I've come to many of the same conclusions about life, art, magic, gender, control, freedom, etc that are found in these essays. This second book by Jenny "The Bloggess" Lawson is a great sequel to her first. More stories of Lawson's life that are so ridiculous they must be true. Lawson has dealt with a lot in her life. Some of the stories are lighthearted, while others deal with some pretty deep stuff.If you've read her first book or just follow her wonderful social media or blog, this is a must read! I really enjoyed the audiobook, which is read by the author herself.I give this audiobook a 4/5! It's a comical and emotional book. A great addition to the memoirs of the modern comedy woman.

Ever get stuck in a conversation with someone that thinks they're hilarious and original but really they're just immature and likely exaggerating every tale they tell? And you can't get a word in between their ramblings to end the conversation? and they're incapable of reading your body language and are oblivious to how uncomfortable you are?If you'd pay for that experience then this book is for you. Otherwise save your money.

Last year I bought this author's hilarious LET'S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED when it was a Daily Deal and enjoyed it enormously. I didn't know that she had written a second book until it showed as a Daily Deal and I grabbed it and stopped reading the book I was in the middle of to wolf it down. (Figuratively speaking, of course.)Her first book is a memoir of her bizarre childhood. It's presented in a comic manner and I suspect that many readers will be upset to learn that her life hasn't been non-stop laughs. Not that this one isn't wet-your-pants funny in parts, but Ms. Lawson's main goal here is to discuss her life-long battle with depression and she does so in a way that's peculiarly her own. (And sometimes just peculiar.)Mental illness is the Final Frontier of medicine and we still can't fully convinced ourselves that it's not "all in your head." Of course, it IS "all in your head" but that doesn't make it less debilitating or easier to treat. The societal costs of untreated or poorly treated mental illness in terms of suicide, unemployment or underemployment, incarceration, etc. has never been calculated. Maybe we just don't want to think about it.This is an inside look at chronic depression from a woman who has struggled all of her life and will continue to do so. Barring a miracle cure, there are no happy endings for those with chronic depression. But there can be happy days and hours and minutes in between the misery and Jenny valiantly grabs every one of them and savors it. If you have ever suffered from depression or if you love someone who has, you should read this book.I remember reading LET'S PRETEND and thinking that it must have been uncomfortable growing up with a father whose idea of parenting was waking his little daughters up and telling them that he had brought them a pet squirrel. The "pet" was road-kill that Dad had gutted and was using as a hand puppet. Not exactly the sort of childhood memory that makes it into the eulogy, right? But it turns out that having a taxidermist father has some advantages after all. When her stuffed road-kill raccoon suffers a Las Vegas-related accident, Pop was able to fashion new hands and feet for it. [Incidentally, road-kill isn't really a literary "theme" in these books. It's just something that Texas has a LOT of.]This family has been given enough lemons to keep a lemonade stand going indefinitely. I admire this lady (and her wonderful husband!) more than I can say. She is a beacon of hope for those who live in the shadows. God bless her.

I've read amazing reviews about this book and that's why I bought it. Not my cup of tea, I fail to find it funny or entertaining. For me it's just the author trying too hard to be funny.

I loved this book. I'm not one who readily laughs out loud, but this had me giggling helplessly. Not once or twice, but a LOT. And I'm mentally ill, too, so this book was a wonderful vacation for me from having to deal with stuff I don't have enough spoons for. I never encountered anyone who thinks in tangential, progressively absurd streams of consciousness before, JUST LIME ME!!And I need to respond to reviews that were bitchy about the author's "luxury" of not being able to get out of bed, and what was perceived as name-dropping: Mental illness is not all created equal. I only say that because my FIRST impulse was to scold those idiots for judging a sick person by well-person rules, but then I thought that was mean. Maybe they are just less unwell. Personally, I've had days when I couldn't leave my cocoon, and there's nothing luxurious about it. It's hell. And hey, wow, a famous person knows some other famous people, who were so cool they helped her! That's name-dropping?Maybe if you're healthy, or if you're in denial, or you're just a judgmental boob, this book won't be funny or work at all for you. I feel sorry for you, because Jenny (I feel like we're on a first-name basis now), is a kick-ass, genuine, smart, hilarious survivor you'd be blessed by if you had any sense.
