We read our son (28 months) at least 3 books before bed every night ... so to keep my husband and I from getting bored, I buy books by season and holiday - no matter what holiday. This was one of the ones we purchased for February. It was lovely; simple prose and easy to understand. We also recomend: Round like a Mooncake and Red is a Dragon, http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dragon-Colors-Roseanne-Thong/dp/0811864812.

Fun story and followed it up with making some lanterns in class.

This is a nonfiction book aimed at the preK-K level, and it contains just the right amount of information for kids aged 3-5. The illustrations are lovely and there is simple text on each page. I paired this book along with Dragon Dance (author: Holub) and D is for Dragon Dance (author: Compestine), which have more lyrical text, for a preschoolers' storytime about Chinese New Year.

We used this book to learn about the Chinese New Year. It taught us and it was a delightful story. We then made paper lanterns.

Perfect for Chinese New Year lesson!

ty

Fun story for Chinese New Year. Not much depth but nice images.

I plan to study for a Six Sigma Green Belt soon, and I thought preparing by reading some of the process improvement classics would be a good way to get a background for the vocabulary and ideas that started it all. Of course, this book is one of those in that canon. While the thoughts that the words represent are enlightening at best, fun at worst, the translation is awful.THE CONTENT -- Awesome! If you want to learn about ways of thinking and give them names so that you can articulate the ideas to other people, this book is great! I loved how Ohno uses real examples from his life (or made up ones in his mind) and Japanese or Toyota history to make his points more tangible. He shows us ways of thinking to "reduce cost" (i.e., get fit or "lean") north strategically (e.g., Supermarket System = Just in Time = kanban) and operationally (start with a base standard and allow workers to improve upon them, a.k.a., kaizen). I am not sure if I have all of the ideas correct after my first reading, but it was definitely can start a mind on the right path toward improvement.WRITING STYLE -- The main points of this book are repeated and developed many times in many ways over the course of this book, which made it a study for me because that is not a typical way that North Americans write (a more cut-to-the-point style). I found myself having to read it like I read "The Silmarillion" by Tolkien (i.e., as I read I had to remember and reference earlier pages so that I could understand the terminology and see how the points were developed). So, it was tiring to really understand, but the effort is really worthwhile!TRANSLATION -- Problematic English, for example plenty of "this" (a demonstrative adjective, not a noun) without a noun afterward make the book confusing and lead me to question "this what?" In addition (and ironically in a book about trimming the fat) did not think about economy of word usage: plenty of sentences, even if they preserve the exact words of the author, do nothing to support points and actually make the book harder to read, which I do not believe is in the spirit of what Ohno was trying to accomplish by making the chapters so short. In short, it appears to me that the translator was probably not an Ohno expert but more of just a person who happened to be literate in Japanese and English. My guess is that the translator's native language is Japanese, because the grammar problems I mention above suggest limited English proficiency.

I am a bit torn about this book. On one hand, I absolutely loved it. On the other hand, I don't think this is necessary or even suitable reading for all Lean practitioners.Workplace management is a collection of short transcripts of Taiichi Ohno's spoken monologues. As a transcript of spoken word, it is not extensively polished, although the English translation is high-quality language. The book offers both a first-person historical perspective into Lean and the development of various Lean tools as well as insight into the value base on which Lean was built. For example, the way Ohno quotes and speaks of Confucius give clear insight into the Confucian roots of Lean, which are not often discussed. I believe that these roots are vital for the Lean concept of respect for people. On the other hand, these ideals are not completely alien to the Western world either, as both the Aristotelian concept of the golden mean and John Stuart Mill's defense of freedom of speech share the some of the same values. Thus, while this is an interesting subject, understanding these roots is not strictly necessary for creating a Lean system. If you are new to Lean, I would not recommend this book. The concepts are not clearly explained and the book follows no clear path from start to finish. If you just want to use Lean, I am not sure whether I should recommend this book to you either. The tools and most of the reasons behind them are more clearly explained in more recent works, for example in those of Jeffrey Liker, Mike Rother, and Masaaki Imai. You should read this book if you are interested in the values that shaped Lean (although you need to read between the lines to get there) or if you are interested in a first-person historical narrative of the beginnings of Lean. It is a short book, so if you have even slight interest in these subjects, reading it will not take a long time.

While no one person invented lean, no one is given more credit than Taiichi Ohno. Access to his true thoughts and ideas are rare, and this book is the best and most useful of Ohno's work. Many lean students would want nothing more than to spend a day with Taiichi Ohno walking through their plant. This book is the closest thing we have left to that experience. Jon Miller has done a diligent job not just in translation but ensuring that the true meaning comes through in a readable fashion. You truly feel as if you are in conversation with the father of the Toyota Production System. While this book won't paint a clear picture of what to do next on your lean journey, it should be required reading for any serious student of the subject.

Companies are always looking to groom and promote leaders. This book is key to self improvement and serving as a teacher towards working smarter and becoming a leader yourself. Teh example provided by Mr. Ohno are funny. He also teaches you a little Japanese along the way.

As always it is a pleasure reading what Taichii Ohno has to say. The book is full of wisdom and always up the game for us Lean Practitioners! Be on your toes he says - don't just accept things as they are - change and improve things. The message is clear: Ganbare! Keep on struggling to get things better!

I found this an excellent book with great insights on both the man and TPM theory. Not only does it provide the theory, it is full of insightful, practical real life examples of their application along with the why and how. I consider this book a great basis for anyone interested in Lean application.

Great book with many out side the box ideas, for managers. Makes you take a hard look at your management style.

Good book for the money. It's like listening to Taiichi Ohno himself.

This is an amazing book to read if you want to see how some of the most important ideas in eastern mysticism and modern physics are converging. Actually, the "converging" is only taking place in our understanding: the concepts and worldviews of the two schools of thought are startlingly similar and have been for some time, and the author does a great job for the most part of drawing the parallels while not getting too technical with the modern physics stuff. I say "for the most part" because towards the end of the book (about the last two chapters) he basically says "screw the layman" and delves deeply into S matrix theory in a very technical, confusing, boring, and brain-overloading way. This is where he lost me; I wasn't able to finish the book. But most of the book is a great read--one of the best on the subject in my opinion.

Wish this was written in 1972 when my High school physics professor mentioned that I could reinforce the principles of the yoga I was studying with the study of physics. I thought he was out of his mind since I thought they were complete opposites. Capra explains so eloquently that science and mysticism are not dichotomies but dialectically in sync. Capra ends one more separation that existed for me.

An excellent read for anyone interested in the relationship between sophisticated modern physics and the human experience. It is alittle in depth on some of the physics concepts if you are not familiar with much, but a few breaks for some research on the internet cleared up the jargon for myself and helped me grasp some of the concepts better. Very satisfying read.

Great book! One of my favorite books! It clearly shows the connection between eastern mysticism (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism) and western philosophies in science; and how they're just different ways of explaining the same thing. A bit longer than I expected, but the kind of long that you appreciate.Again, Great book, and recommended to anyone who has any interest at all in physics, the universe, math, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, or even history.

Now that the Tao and Quantum physics are merging into a new religion, it becomes imperative that understanding the mechanics of both is necessary for those that seek understanding about reality and what lies beyond. Taoism may seem strange and exotic to Westerners and faith-based believers, but here, the undeniable facts show no separation between this ancient philosophy and contemporary science. As a fan of Bohr, I was both amused and amazed at his insight into this mysterious unity.

Fritjof Capra knows very well how to expose and articulate complicated technical concepts of modern physics. Even though complete beginners will probably not understand and learn every single scientific concept and model without really studying them by means of additional material in different moments, the curious, sensitive readers will surely have an illuminating experience with this work and may feel stimulated not only to explore its implications soon but also to read it again after one or more years. As for the cosmologist concepts underlying systematic meditation, yoga, Chinese traditional medicine, religious or artistic rituals, and other ancient, traditional practices of India, China, and Japan's highly educated culture, Capra keeps the same level of writing quality. And, of course, the link between quantum-relativistic physics and Eastern mysticism is extremely responsible. Simply put, the book is a must!

If you are painfully familiar with classic Western thought, with its fixed rules based upon "known" facts and repetitious cycle of discoveries that disprove those same facts, treat yourself to this non-jargon based exploration of Eastern thought. 2500 years ago Buddhist, Taoist and Hindu thinkers intuited a unitary concept of the universe that comports very well with today's scientific observations at the sub-atomic level. Through observation and meditation, they did what Einstein could not do, developed a theory of how the universe works for galactic and sub-atomic sized events and objects. In the process, they suggested that everyone and everything in the universe may simultaneously both contain and compose every other aspect of that universe.

I loved this book! A bit of science background or understanding helps, otherwise I recommend not getting too hung up on remembering specifics in the latter chapters. Focus on the meaning in its totality. If one can do this? Then read this book, you will love it (if you like physics/spirituality/Mysticism).

This is a fantastic suplement, a bit of repetition from the description of the cults of the Old World in the Core Rule Book of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition, but a really solid resource for fleshing out the world. Great descriptions of the various shrines and temples of the various cults, information on relics etc... Would absolutely recommend to anyone who refuses to give up playing in the Grim World of Perilous Adventure even if Games Workshop has given up on the world that made their business.

English review:This is a really good book, filled with a lot of information about everything you need to know about Religion in the Warhammer FRP 2nd Edition game. As all the book about WFRP this book contains a lot of information that could be used to create the WFRP feel and so you could use also for the 3rd Edition; in this case you doesn't have the card and you have to skip the NPC statistics, but these information cover only a little amount of the book.It has a softcover, but the book is really good made; layout, images, font and so on are like the hardcover version. The price, around the 20$ is really an affair. Alessio

I personally think that this book truly helps give new life to the world of Warhammer. Other books list gods and pantheons and what spells they get and stick to that. But this book gives you important holidays, gestures, minor local gods, people's feelings, different orders and radical beliefs, how other's see elder races's gods, etc. It actually gives you the means to show why religion is more than just a skill bonus or special power. These are gods who are prayed to when the people are troubled, who races and kingdoms go to war for, and who willingly (or unwillingly) die or be executed for. It shows once more Warhammer's dedication to a roleplaying game. And yes, there are still very, very cool new rules, careers, and spells and such. Very sweet book.

A must have pick for Warhammer Fantasy. Great information on the gods and playing a priest.

I have a warm spot in my heart for the Games Workshop art used in these adventures

I was very impressed with this sourcebook, both from a roleplay and mechanics point of view. Having played Warhammer Fantasy since second edition, I have been very happy with the level of detail balance versus playability of this editions books in general.

Classic RPG. I prefer this game to AD&D. Game mechanics are more simple which makes it quicker to learn. The career advancement is much more interesting and I like being able to build your characters statistics in a more intelligent manner. Unfortunately most people are sheep and unwilling to give most other games a chance. If more people who play AD&D would give this game a chance and play a few sessions of it, I know there would be less people playing AD&D.

Before Tome of Salvation the Gods in Warhammer universe had meat mostly around the gods of Chaos. The ruinous powers and their followers was so well developed that it was leaving all the other gods in a secondary role at best (except maybe Sigmar and Ulric, but what the players had at their disposal was still far from what have been dug about the Chaos gods). The background about the Classical Gods (Verena, Shaylla, Sigmar, Morr, etc) was so thin that it was not appealing for the players to take these gods as a key stone around which a character could be built. The book Tome of Salvation comes to fix this by adding content to the Classical Gods. It goes even further by providing matter concerning the role and the importance of faith in the Old World in general. It defines the life of a priest and how each differ according to the god they worship. It explains how the common folks and nobles deals with the Classical Gods, the superstition and the ancestor spirits. The book provides also information concerning the minor gods of the Old World. It deals with the issue of the outlawed gods, such as Khaine and Gunndred, outside the famous Chaos Gods. It gives also some information about the Gods of the other races (Dwarf, Elf, Halfling) and how their faith differ. If Tome of Corruption is essential to Warhammer by the review and the information it give about the influence and power the Chaos have in this universe, Tome of Salvation marks an important turning point because it come to add content and depth to those who are benevolent. It comes also to offer an alternative to those who are evil in intent but who do not worship or rely on the faith for the Ruinous Power. For the numerous topics this book explores and develops for the first time, it is doomed to become a classic for the world of Warhammer. Here is the Table of contents:Chapter I: A Brief History of the Cults of the Empire.Chapter II: Old World CultsThe Cult of ManannThe Cult of MorrThe Cult of MyrmidiaThe Cult of RanaldThe Cult of ShallyaThe Cult of SigmarThe Cult of Taal and RhyaThe Cult of UlricThe Cult of VerenaChapter III: Folk WorshipNoble vs. Folk WorshipMinor DeitiesAncestor SpiritsSuperstitions and Folk Customs- Magic and superstition- The Evil Eye- Variations in the Folk Customs- Prayers and Holy Sayings- Showing faith- Venerated Souls of the EmpireChapter IV: Extremes of FaithThe Reasons WhyMotivations of the Truly PiousMajor Fanatical Sects- Manann- Morr- Myrmidia- Ranald- Shallya- Sigmar- Taal and Rhya- Ulric- VerenaActs of Faith-penance-punishment-sacrifice-serviceA Temple of Flesh- Abstinence- MortificationNew CareersTensions Between The Cults-theological differences-behavior-personal differencesChapter V: Other Gods-Gunndred-HandrichForeign Gods In The EmpireDwarf, Elf, and Halfling GodsGods and MonstersOutlawed Gods- Outlawed or Chaos?- Khaine- Other outlawed gods- False beliefsThe Dark GodsChapter VI:Festivals, Holy Days, and Rights of PassageThe Imperial CalendarHolidaysRites of Passage- Pregnancy and fatherhood- Birth- Dooming- Quickening- Marriage- Divorce- Journeyman's Release- Soldier's DayA Sample Town's Year of FestivalsChapter VII: A Holy WorldPlaces of Worship- Shrines- Temples- MonasteriesThe Monastery of the Dark MaidenHoly SitesPilgrimagesThe Road to CouronneChapter VIII: The Life of A PriestTo Be A PriestA Priest For Every OccasionDifferent Paths- Manann- Morr- Myrmidia- Ranald- Shallya- Sigmar- Taal and Rhya- Ulric- Verena- A wandering lifeThe LaityI Need A Priest!Chapter IX: The Holy WarriorsCrusadesThe Holy Orders- Knights of the White Wolf- The Black Guard- Knights of the Blazing Sun- Knights of the Everlasting Light- Longshanks- Knights Griffon- Sons of Manann- Other ordersTemplar CareersHammers of Righteousness, Shields of Faith-new weaponry-new armor and clothingMen of God, Men of WarChapter X: MiraclesThe Book of PrayersDivine MagicDivine LoresThe Wrath of the GodsOptional Rule: Mark of the GodsRelicsIndex(I only included the "-sub category" on an entry of the table of contents when I thought it could help to define it more specificly.)

At the beginning of this book George Jones said he would be as honest as his memory would allow. I believe he was. This book at times is almost too painful to read. I was born a Country Music fan. I was lucky enough to see George Jones perform twice alone and once with Tammy Wynette back in the 70's. Now I truly know how lucky I was. I think his wife Nancy was out of her ever loving mind. But I think everyone has a soulmate and when it's your time to meet them, God puts you together. I'm glad that Nancy was able to love George and give him the happiness she could in the time they had. If you want a hard honest look at the life of a recording, touring artist. Buy this book and take notes. If your a fan of this Country Music Legend, this might be a little hard to read. I love the music of George Jones and always will. God Bless Nancy and his children.

Eh, an okay book. You learn more about his younger life than his adult life which appears to have mostly been a haze of drunk and drugged memories. Several times he mentions the singers closest to him, apparently Johnny Cash and Waylon, but one is left with the impression that there was no real camaraderie there, that George simply used and abused them as he did everyone else. One other item that stands out is that George was quite lucky to have never killed anyone, as often as he was shooting his guns (often at people!) while drunk. Still, it is an important tale, a cautionary tale of an enormous talent mostly wasted -- despite the many hits he had.

I have always loved his music. I realized he was a drinker but having several in my family, that was no big deal- except for someone perhaps who lived with him. I always felt people used him and he very likely saw through them. This travelling and the responsibilities for so many people's livelihood could and probably did get to him. Great singer and it was apparent he loved what he did.

I seldom read books because few of them hold my attention strongly enough to interrupt my normal schedule. With "I Live To Tell It All" I truly hated to put it down to go to bed - so I went to bed late. I've long been a George Jones fan. I was aware from all the press he got during his career that he had a hard drinking, drug using, tormented personal life so I was anxious to hear about it from him, the man who lived it. Wow, I had no idea how hard it was. Music, which was what made him tick, turned in to a near prison to him. He did immeasurable damage to himself but the damage others did to him was even worse. His manager tracked him like a hardened criminal, even using a large force of maffia type manhunters - even using helicopters. They basically locked down a complete area of Alabama (I believe it was) looking for him. He was forced to camp in the woods to escape their search because it was so intense - they even had citizens looking for him rather than trying to hide or protect him. One of his manager kept him buried in cocaine in order to control him. Many people in his business life as well as his personal life took advantage of him and lied to him. What a sad way for anyone to live. Music was his life. It also became his captor. Somehow, even though his life spiraled in to total financial and personal devastation, he kept making wonderful music for all of us to enjoy. And somehow, owing to his personal inner strength, and to finally meeting a woman who loved him more than he loved himself, he survived and lived to tell it all to his fans.

This book is so many things to me. I have always loved George Jones. I always knew that he had alcohol and drug problems but I was married to an alcoholic and always felt that i had been through it all. This book surely let me know that I had it easy compared to George Jones and his co-dependents. There were times while reading this book that I broke down and cried. He (Jones) was such a sweet man and he really did not know what he was doing most of the time. In other words, I feel he was very innocent of what he was doing to himself and to others that he loved and that loved him. I could go on and on but no need to do that. It was a wonderful book and probably one of the most truthful biographies that I have ever read. I will be reading it again soon.........

I ordered this book upon hearing of George's death. I've never seen him live and never bought any of his records. Still, I think he had the greatest voice in any genre of music, ever. I agree with George that after the 80's there weren't many noteworthy country artists. If you don't have the look, you'll never make it in the business. Country music isn't country anymore. Miranda Lambert is cute, but she's just a fad that won't be remembered ten years from now. There are no authentic voices out there. I can rarely distinguish one voice from another in todays music. The way they live their over the top lives don't relate to the common working person. George, Merle, Johnny, Hank and Waylon lived what they sang. People that went through the great depression had stories to tell. They were true heroes. George and the others I mentioned told their stories firsthand. They made a lot of money, but that wasn't their driving force. Hard work, broken hearts and the struggle to survive were the roots of the greatest music ever heard. Oh, how I wish those guys would live forever. This book was written in plain country language. And I believe George Jones did the best he could and was totally honest in his telling. He should have died a multi-millionaire, but admits he knew nothing about business, nor any idea how to handle money. I think he died comfortable but not wealthy. He had to work right up to his death to make the money for his cars, houses and past debts. He lived an outrageous life that would have killed most. And that was as compelling as his music. I'm just glad he "lived to tell it all."I hope anyone that loves true country music reads George's account of a poorboy with a magic voice that the world couldn't get enough of.
