John Rawls: Reticent Socialist, by William A. Edmundson

Book Description

This book is the first detailed reconstruction of the late work of John Rawls. It focuses on Rawls's presentation of two regime types capable of realizing 'justice-as-fairness': property-owning democracy and liberal socialism. Long mistaken as an apologist for welfare-state capitalism, Rawls emerges here as an understated advocate of socialism.

Madame Bovary, Flaubert's debut novel, is a masterpiece for a number of reasons. First, it is a stunning and unique exploration of the French Revolution, with each character representing a different idea prevalent at that time - very clever. Perhaps we may lack appreciation of that today, as it's no longer new, but in Flaubert's day, this was extraordinary. However, that's far from the only unique feature of the story.See, Flaubert is perhaps the first solid example of masterful handling of what writers and English professors refer to as Free Indirect Speech. You'll notice that the story opens with an unnamed first person narrator, then, without warning, the story shifts to third person omniscient, having already utterly and completely drawn you into the story. It's brilliant, and even today, Flaubert is the one you'll be encouraged to study if you wish to master writing from this point of view.I highly recommend this story, for philosophers, for writers, and for those just looking for an interesting tale exploring some important truths.

I liked the fact that this text was a paperback and was one of the few that I could find on line for a reasonable price. However, this book was edited extremely poorly. It seems that the format was transferred from some other format. I say this because sentences and even words were cut up, ending early on one line on a page and then recommencing on the next line. For a student of the French language, this was disconcerting since it was difficult at times to discern whether or not the letters at the end of the line were supposed to go with the letters on the next line to create a legitimate French word. I would say that only fluent French speakers should buy this edition since they would be able to readily discern whether or not the word at the end of the line was intact or just split up in a weird way and might be able to put up with the problem in return for the reasonable price. For non-fluent French speakers, I would recommend that they stay away from purchasing this book.

I decided to read Madame Bovary after years of seeing it in lists of classic novels. Having completed it, I cannot in honesty say that I enjoyed every page of it because I found Emma and her husband Charles Bovary to be two of the most shallow people in fiction. Her life is built on romantic notions that she cannot find in real relationships while he seems to exist solely to show us that one can be a doctor while still being dull and stupid. On numerous occasions, I found myself wishing I could give both of them a good swift kick. Then again perhaps the point of the novel is to show us how banal life is when one cannot find anything meaningful beyond oneself. Instead of being tragic, I found the both of their deaths as pointless as their lives. The fact that neither is any worse than the miserable people that surround them is the best thing left to say..In that sense, the novel serves a useful purpose in that it reveals that a full life involves more than satisfying one's own appetites as Emma attempts to do and the folly of basing one's happiness on an unworthy object of adoration as he does. I recommend reading it as forerunner of so much of today's entertainment built on unsympathetic characters facing the consequences of their vapid choices. The art of the novel lies in Flaubert's ability to convey that message without appearing to preach.

Like Lady Chetterly, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary spent her life searching for a happiness that was more idealized than real. However, in the case of Madame Bovary, she found that the happiness that she found in illicit relationships was inadequate to fill the emptiness that she felt in her life.. In addition, the acquisition of material goods that led to financial ruin did not satisfy the the yearning which she would bestow upon her a fuller life. The author did a remarkable job of making Madame Bovary's frustration almost palpable. The frantic life of lies and desperation that she lived in pursuit of her illusive dream manifested itself in a madness that would not even allow her to love her own daughter.Flaubert does an engaging job of instilling in the reader a hope that Madame Bovary would not come to a tragic end. But, as the reader expected from the beginning, it was not to be.

"Madame Bovary, Gustave Falubert's first novel, is the story of the beautiful Emma Rouault who is married to the provincial doctor Charles Bovary yet harbors dreams of an elegant and passionate life. Escaping into sentimental novels, she finds her fantasies dashed by the tedium of her days. Nothing serves to satisfy - not marriage, not motherhood. In an effort to fill her emptiness and make her life everything she believes it should be, Emma spends lavishly on clothes and her home and embarks on two disappointing love affairs. Soon heartbroken and crippled by debts, Emma takes drastic action with tragic consequences for her husband and daughter."A beautifully written story of discontent; told objectively, without romanticizing or moralizing. Madame Bovary is a masterpiece of realist fiction.

Given the obsession with fairy tales, happy endings, and love at first sight which has convinced a great deal of people to believe these things exist outside of fiction, Madame Bovary is a refreshing tome. My interpretation and what I choose to focus on in the story would be the notion that people try to fit people into their own lives; making a prince charming for their own love story and producing their very own romantic comedy. This is not to say that those romantic classics are without merit, but Madam Bovary is a valid response to characters who take them too seriously. The prose is not difficult to follow, and it's eventful for the genre it's in. A great read for the practical, cynical, satirical, or anyone who wants an introduction to Flaubert in late 19th century literature.

From the Back Cover

This engaging life story chronicles one man's battle to earn both respect and an education, only to discover in mid-life that his severe mental "fog" was a serious learning disability. Dr. Abraham Schmitt was born and grew up in a nearly illiterate peasant Mennonite village in Saskatchewan. Even in this community which disparaged education, Schmitt lived with the scourge of being the village idiot. Given the opportunity, he left and followed a relentless internal urge to correct the mental contradictions he felt so painfully. The larger world was no kinder; his sense of failure grew only more keen and desperate. Until he learned about dyslexia. One man's on-going trial of living with a severe learning disability will bring greater sensitivity and hope to all who travel with Schmitt on this astonishing journey. "Abe Schmitt's towering portrayal is rich, meaningful, and poignant. It is a book of searing honesty in which the author portrays in unstinting detail the lifelong torments he has endured and overcome." - Milton Brutten, Ph.D., Council of Advisors, The Orton Dyslexia Society "Attests to an indomitable spirit." - Publishers Weekly "A truly remarkable book." - Bookends

I must have missed the part about him being Mennonite when I bought the book, but that was a pleasant surprise! It's always fun to read about fascinating people and this fellow is among the most interesting, due to his strength of will to overcome obstacles and the fact he grew up in a primitive Mennonite community, something my kids can relate to since we live near Amish country and see Mennonites a lot (tho not like the ones in his village!).I got the book for myself, to try to figure out how to draw on the strengths that come as part of dyslexia, because my family has a touch of it, with my son being the most inconvenienced by it. It turns out this is a really fantastic read-aloud book for home schooling and I'm going to recommend it to my friends as such. The writing style of this book is very readable, great imagery and descriptiveness that really helps you see the world as he saw it, and the pace is great to hold kids' attention. If you like this book and are reading it because you or someone you care about has dyslexia, you'd probably like The Da Vinci Method - Break Out & Express Your Fire as well.

A facinating personal history of growing up as well as being an adult with dyslexia, as seen from the 1940's to the 80's or so. I was hoping for something that would extrapolate more to present day educational circumstances for my own understanding and advice, but the author's early educational circumstances were couched in corporal punishment for non-compliance or poor performance. It seems that being misunderstood and "written off" was par for the course at that time if one was dyslexic. May I hope that today things are better? I felt sheer admiration for Shmitt's persistance and dogged persuit of advanced education in spite of his multifaceted handicap. There was so much depth of thought and "brilliance" that needed to be explored, realized, and recognized! In a later chapter he talks about what life is like for the spouse or others who live and work with him and his dyslexia. I found that chapter to be the most helpful part of all. I would strongly recommend this book if only for that chapter alone. (BTW Dr Schmitt must have married an angel! )

Yes. Excellent book. My husband has started reading this book. It has really encouraged him. He has learning struggles and we have a son who has some learning struggles. I would highly recommend this book to home schooling parents who have sons or a daughter that struggle with learning. It will give you insight into who they are and perhaps give ideas on making learning attainable for your child.

I bought this for my daughter because she didn't believe how smart she is because of the troubles of dyslexia. Many times, she interrupted her reading of it to exclaim, "I do this!" She felt much more secure about her intelligence and was very relieved to find she was not alone in her struggles.

Excellent condition

I've read this book several times. This is the most practical book in terms of understanding my son with his dyslexia challenges. This particular copy was a gift.

great condition

This is a unique story about a man from a poor Amish background. As a child, the man is "trapped" in his body because he is not able to communicate his handicap. It is fascinating to read how the man overcomes the handicap with the aid of his wife and various individuals in his life to achieve great accomplishments in education.

This book was for my online chemistry class. The price was great compared to some of the other sites I order my text books from. The book arrived in perfect condition. I found it easy to read and understand. When it comes to understanding a chemistry class online with little to no teacher helping, simplicity is a must. The charts and illustrations are easy to follow.

Bought to have a hard-copy of my textbook for a college class. The book is weird in that it juxtaposes chemistry learning with environmental sciences. It is a very broad, loose look at the subject.

Book was a little more used than I expected but it still has plenty of life in it. Super fast shipping.

I ended up dropping out of chemistry but still love the material. This is a great book for your 'less than advanced' chem student you can use as a reference. It's an easier read for most. So much good information in an old used book!

I don't know because I bought it for someone else.

A good buy. Well-written and easy to follow and understand.

the book is informative and fairly well written, It helps understanding the concepts learned in class.

Great product, fast delivery.

I was prompted to pick up The Four Agreements and this one from my bookshelf just prior to heading out to Utah for The Reset Experience and the timing couldn’t have been more apropos.Although the title reads The Seven Spiritual Laws of “Success,” it could also read a The Seven Spiritual Laws of “Life.”At 111 pages, you have just around an hour to invest, but it’s worth every single minute.Often times, the simplest and most concise messages are the ones that resonate with me the most, perhaps because of my monkey brain and the tendency for it to wander! We have Seven Laws as follows;• The Law of Pure Potentiality —>This law is about pure consciousness, something I didn’t fully grasp until AFTER The Reset Experience. More on this later.• The Law of Giving —> This revolves around “intention” and it should be giving and receiving that is unconditional and from the heart.• The Law of “Karma” or Cause and Effect —> I believe we all understand this one!• The Law of Least Effort —> Follow the path of no resistance. When you work in your Zone of GENIUS and find FLOW, everything becomes effortless.• The Law of Intention and Desire —> When you place your attention on your intention, you will attain the desired outcome.• The Law of Detachment —> A lack of knowing the TRUE “Self” creates attachments based on fear and insecurities. Let go of expectations and attachments to outcomes.• The Law of “Dharma” or Purpose in Life —> This one really struck home. I took a picture of a page on the plane that I shall never forget. It’ll be the first comment below. This book is simple, yet extraordinarily profound. If you’re able to discern the messages in this book AND apply the concepts, I guarantee you’ll find a better YOU and powerful way to live!Amazon gives 4.7 stars after 1,204 reviews. Goodreads gives 4.08 stars after 43,967 ratings and 987 reviews. This one gets my seldom offered up 5-Star rating and it’s one I will read again and again should I ever need a reminder.Much Love! ❤️🙏🏻#FridaysFind #MIAGD #DeepakChopra #TheSevenSpiritualLawsOfSuccess #WeAreCreators #Karma #Dharma #UnconditionalLOVE #PurePotentiality #Consciousness

Life changing book. Write the days of the week on each chapter. Every day, re-read one of the very short chapters when you wake up. Pretty soon it will alter your worldview, make you a better person, keeps you focused and on track. Alongside transcendental meditation and your life will change for the better. Trust me. No therapy required. :)

Insightful and practical guidebook on aligning your consciousness, your being to the energy of the Universe, so that you can effortlessly release your wish to the Universe, and learn to let go of expectations, and let the Universe make things happen when the time is perfect. The practice of not judging anything for the day, and the practice of silence are particularly useful to me. Thank you!

This was a good read for me. Quite eye opening...At the time I was going through a transformation in my life. Jaded by Dogmatic religions and feeling like Frederich Nietche this gave me a new sort of approach to bettering myself mentally physically as well as spiritually . I now know how to heal my body mind and spirit and keep myself on a better path. Truly inspirational book... made me begin researching a lot of holistic medicine, get away from prescription drugs. Distancing myself from toxic people and situations. And even meditating or simply taking a 10 minute rest from the rat-race really does amazing things. (slight personal digression there ;) Deepak goes at life from every conceivable angle (Sciences of Psychology and Medicine as well as spirituality {more so than typical religious dogma} Keep an open mind when you read this one and you can get a lot from it.

Like most of us, I've seen Mr. Chopra on CNN. He's well spoken for sure, but I wasn't particularly interested in reading any of his books. Then I attended my first Science & Nonduality conference and witnessed Mr. Chopra deliver a knockout talk in 16 minutes.I searched online for the books he's written and I found this one: THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS. Integrating success with spirituality is a subject I'm very much interested in, so I got this book and read it in a matter of days. From all the 7 laws outlined in the book, The Law of Giving resonated the most. This chapter alone made the entire book a worthwhile read.I also found the Law of Pure Potentiality very interested. The remaining 5 laws were also intriguing, but not all of it worked for me.Each chapter has steps to follow, but I feel Mr. Chopra sometimes goes to extremes by suggesting these steps be practiced all the time. I recommend starting with baby steps and moving on from there. That way, expectations can be met with less of a chance for disappointment.I highlighted many passages through this book. There are precious gems everywhere.THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS is a quick and easy read and I recommend it to anyone interested in more from life than just material success.

Its disguised as a diet book, but in reality its a book about self "fufillment". Like I'm sure so many people in the world do, when they get stressed, they turn to food. This book opened my eyes to the habits that probably 90% of people do. Instead of eating to fufill a need, because we're bored, angry, tired, or depressed, Deepak tells you to take a step back, take a deep breath and do some soul searching "what do I really want with my life?" .Don't get me wrong there's plenty of diet advice.... Deepak gets you to be aware of what you eat, and that you're allowed to eat crappy food every once in a while. Cold turkey NEVER works when dieting, it only leads to crash and burn.Overall amazing book and made me buy some of his other work.

I mentioned at the beginning of the year that this book made my 2016 list because I knew I would disagree with the author on all sorts of issues around body life in a church but admired what I saw as a commitment toward church planting. The book confirmed both of those notions.I think the book’s basic strength is that it’s written by someone who believes enormous churches where you cannot possibly know the people around you are a good thing. That’s because those churches, if they saw the issue of sending properly, have the most immediate opportunity to impact the landscape of Christianity in America. In one chapter, Greear explains that it’s wonderful to both be attractional (meaning to try to draw people into church gatherings for evangelism) and missional (meaning we need to go to non-Christians and proclaim the gospel to them in ways that are adapted to their language, background, and culture. The way he explains it is useful and a helpful bridge to people who still think inviting people to church is an effective evangelistic technique (which it almost never is now and will be even less so in the future). One of the first things that hits you in the book is J.D.’s humility in admitting that he did not start off with the mentality and philosophy of ministry he promotes in the book. In several places in the book he comes back to where he had to make substantial course corrections and repent of sinful or bad motivations in order to get to where they are now.His overarching point, made on page 19 and then throughout the book, is that since the God of the Bible is a sending, or missionary God, His followers should be as committed to it as He is. That has to include more than just writing a check to someone living 3000 miles away, it has to be a lifestyle. He effectively draws the comparison of the church as an aircraft carrier that equips the war planes then sends them out for battle as opposed to a cruise liner built for the comfort of its passengers or a battleship that does it’s fighting in limited amounts of big bangs (p 27-29). The idea culminates a few chapters later when he writes:When the church begins to operate with the assumption that everyone is called, our approach to mobilization will shift dramatically. We won’t limit our mission engagement to a bulletin board in the lobby with images of people serving in New Guinea that church members should pray for, as important as that is. We will see every member of our church as a potential missionary to be equipped and mobilized. Our goal is not to send some, or even our best, but to send all into the mission – to our city, across the country, or to the other side of the world.Even though he is a “big church” guy whose Facebook page looks like a rock concert, in the book he does warn big churches trying to be attractional that many times they can “substitute the gathering power of entertainment for the transforming power of the cross.” It’s a helpful warning to those trying to walk the line J.D. is walking and while I bet he and I would see the line at very different places, I’m glad to see that someone who claims to pastor 6,000 people believes there is a line at all.The chapter on racial reconciliation was useful mostly because it didn’t just repeat the same drivel that is spouted from many church leaders today. He actually talked a little about what it would take for the church to truly be reconciled across racial lines. I think he overplayed the hand that God expects us to primarily reach unbelievers who are a lot like us, but overall it was well done. One quote in particular was worth sharing.“Multicultural engagement within your city, like international missions, is something that all believers are expected to participate in, but that God moves certain believers to pursue with focused intentionality. The apostle Paul was in that category. Some of us (under the leadership of the Spirit) need to make this cause our cause. After all, it makes no sense to send people 10,000 miles across the globe to reach people of other cultures when we won’t send people ten miles across our own city to reach people in different neighborhoods. Why would we cross the seas but not the tracks?” (p172)The flow of the book seemed a little choppy to me, mostly because he “chapterized” the core principles that they emphasize at his church. I’m sure it fits their mostly white, suburban, middle class, enormous church but a lot of it didn’t really fit my world at all and a lot of his talking points wouldn’t make much sense to the mission field God has given us. That’s okay because we have our own core principles but in some ways it interfered with the value of the book for me. Still, as I reviewed my kindle version I noticed at least one highlight in each chapter although there seemed to me more highlighting early on.By the end of the book I was convinced J.D. was someone who really loved Jesus and wanted to see the knowledge of His glory cover Raleigh Durham like the waters cover the sea. I was also convinced I wouldn’t last more than a month at his church. The book is a worthwhile read for anyone looking for examples of the kind of culture necessary to be a church that is really focused on the Great Commission. It’s a fairly easy read for a 250 page book and most readers could complete it without any problems.

This is a good book and its message is right on. It tells us what we should have known from when we first became Christians. This message must be carried to a lost and dying world.Any preacher and church worth its salt should know that it is all about the Kingdom and the Kingdom is world wide and it spans all the centuries before and after, if there are to be any more. Jesus himself told us in Matthew 24:14, "When this gospel is preached in the world, then the end will come." He also told us in Matthew 28:18-20, to go into all the world. To teach, baptize, and teach. When we have done these things He will return. We gain the growth of the Kingdom, by "losing", i.e., sending those who have become Christian out into a lost and dying world. May God grant us the wisdom to follow through. Gain Kingdom growth by sending out for exponential expansion.

I believe this book was written to give the facts of what Jesus said, and how that applies to living sent and sending others. It shouldn't surprise me, given we are all fighting our flesh, that there are so many people that seem to "know" Truth, yet are criticizing the book for not giving a clear cut plan on how to send, or because they think Greear's church is creating a franchise. First, do you ever wonder why the lost look at Christians as hypocrites? How about our behavior? If we'd focus as much on the love of Jesus as we do thinking about ourselves and critiquing our brothers and sisters in Christ, it may be much more believable for the lost. Let's remember we are all on the same side. Okay, about the book. It is written in a way that is easy to understand, and as I mentioned already, to explain our role as disciples of Christ in sending. It is not to tell us specifically how, but if you want a little help, there is a section at the end of the book with some good starting points. For those who say he is franchising his church, my only answer would be that there is no way you read the book or know how they plant. And no, I am not a member of their church. I'm on the other side of the country. Those who say it's easy to sacrifice 200 when you have 8,500, really? Sacrificing any number when you have any number is a sacrifice, especially when they come from the small percentage of the church that actually serve and tithe. I find comments like that to be an excuse for the reason why the person making that statement isn't sending well. Bottom line is the second we accept Christ, we are disciples. Disciples follow Jesus and do something to help in the spread of the Gospel. They don't spend more time criticizing or making excuses.

This book really changed my perspective about the church. It was very well written, and I found myself re-reading parts of it again. I highly recommend it for anyone who works in the church world (or even those who are highly active in leadership at a church).

A compelling model for the modern church. It would s actually the model of the historic church too but alas Greear makes the right case for being a seeding and sending church as the way of growth and health. Great insight and advice.

In my church we based our sermons and small group studies on this book for two months. This book guides you through seeing that we need to really look into ourselves and see what kind of person and/or church we want to be...There is NO color in the love of Christ!! Amen...

Great book on getting back to the Gospel. Making sure we stay focused on the Gospel and sending people to ministry as Jesus did with His disciples. I would definitely recommend this book to every Christian as we are all called to make disciples.

Reviews for Apart From Love:★ So much more could be said, but that would be robbing the reader of the joy of discoveries that Poznanasky accomplishes in this profound novel. -Grady Harp, Hall of Fame Reviewer★ One of Poznansky's biggest talents is to challenge and change our perspective with her sharp-minded observations and powerful prose. -Christoph Fischer, Top 500 reviewer★ There is an air of mystery about the book that runs from the beginning to the final pages, but that also draws the reader in and makes the book difficult to put down. -Kathy Parsons, Top 1000 Reviewer

Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader’s pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that will amaze for its clarity, directness and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, Apart From Love, is such a book.Author Uvi Poznansky weaves a mesmerizing tale of family dysfunction with fascinating twists and turns that will effortlessly captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a spellbinding story about an innately dysfunctional family; Ben, Lenny (Ben’s father) and Lenny's new wife Anita. The characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a well written novel that will keep you immersed from the first page to the last. Five stars all the way.

SO GoodI first discovered Uvi Poznansky on twitter. As a blogger, she quickly offered help and cross promotions. She is not selfish and helps all authors. The first book I read of hers was Rise to Power. Since then I can say I am a huge fan. I adore her writing style. The White Piano and was wonderful. I had to read the series. For this book, it gives both POV Perspectives of Ben & Anita The White Piano is woven into this book, which contains both Ben’s and Anita’s perspectives. Personally both sides were equally enjoyable for me. VERY detailed writing with descriptive passages.Overall very emotional read

This book is truly a work of art. I first discovered Uvi Poznansky when I happened upon The White Piano and was intrigued. After reading it, I knew I had to read the entire series. The White Piano is woven into this book, which contains both Ben’s and Anita’s perspectives. If I could give Ben’s side seven stars, I would. Anita’s point of view fills in the missing pieces from The White Piano to present a more complete picture of what went on, but I must admit, I couldn’t wait to get through her chapters so I could return to Ben.There are various issues I have with Anita’s narrative. One is explained at the end of the book, and so I must inform any reader who struggles with the mixture of poetic prose with bad grammar, you must be patient because there is a reason for it. Obviously, we know throughout the book she has bad grammar because she’s not educated. But if she’s not educated, she then wouldn’t tell her story in a poetic or stylistic manner either. However, as I stated, there is a reason for it. Just read until the end.I also was not aware this book apparently takes place around 1980 until I started reading Book 3. I’d thought this was present day, making the overuse of the word “awful” in dialog confusing. The way it’s used sounds more like the 1950s or 1960s to me, but at least I now know this is not supposed to be present day.The Anita narration was just a personal pet peeve, but overall this book is amazing. The plot- wow! It is so dramatic and emotional and contains levels of depth. There is some odd behavior, but this is life, and people can be off. In this family, everyone has their demons, and that is part of what makes the book so touching and so powerful. The books leaves you with lots to think about, and if you try to skim through it quickly, you'll miss out. Enjoy the paint strokes, both large and small. This is an absolutely beautiful work or art.

"Say anything, apart from love." That's the mantra of this book, the heart of it. I'm not commonly a romance reader, but I am a literary reader, and Uvi Poznansky's deft prose and fresh eye showed me corners of the human soul that few novels convey.A passionate tale told by two people: Ben, a twenty-seven year old student, and Anita, spunky, uneducated, the new wife of , Ben's aging father. The two, Ben and Anita, feel a dangerous attraction to one another, and the story is off... taking you with it, into secret realms of desire.Other secrets are soon revealed, about Lenny, Ben's father, and Ben's mother, stricken with early-onset Alzheimer's.And there is a tape recorder... I won't tell you the part it plays in this journey from grief and guilt to forgiveness and love.Uvi Poznansky is a thoughtful, talented writer. Her work brims with nuance. This is not a frivolous book, but it is a romance with real life, and a fine one.

This novel, although well crafted, is morose from the start. Nobody's truly happy; nobody's secure in their position within their family. Lenny's first wife, who he deeply loved and admired for her talent as a pianist, has familial Alzheimers and has been placed in a home. Lenny has tried to replace her with a younger, look-alike lady who is having his baby. But his 27 year-old son, Ben, has come home and Ben's youth is a threat despite the fact that he is a depressive and a person with not much character. Anita does her best to make the older man happy, but with little success as he shuts himself out from his family world, writing all his son's spoken thoughts into a novel. Fear of the hereditary aspect of Alzheimers leads him into this obsession. All around, a very dark novel, dealing well with the misery of being locked into a place nobody wants to be. Well executed, but I can't pretend that I totally enjoyed the story, otherwise, I would have given it a 5 - too much melodrama for my taste and obliquely presented in parts.
