Even if it's in black & white, it's the way the bikes are presented, the history, the men & kids that gave us 'street racing'. I love it.

bad quality of the book, it looks like a old magazine. Don't have a history it's more like a catalog

It's really what you are looking for with lots of pictures and enough descriptions toclarify. Not real deep, just entertaining.

I ended up purchasing this book someone else used.I found the title to be very misleading. It wasn't so much about cafe racers as it was about companies who tried to build motorcycles like them. It also discussed a lot of circuit racing. Mostly it just had pictures and a little blurb about the motorcycle and who made it. There was probably only three or four pages total that talked about real cafe racers and the ton up boys who rode them.I was actually pretty disappointed in the book. I was hoping for a real Cafe Racer book that had stories and accounts from the people who actually reached the ton and spend their nights in the cafe bars.

This is a great book to introduce a reader to the Cafe Racer culture and machines. Since it's looking at the early years the focus is on British marques and builders. Lots of photos and a breakdown for many of the key builders. Walker's book on the Cafe Racers of the 1970s is a great companion.

Not as good as expectd. Certainly not up to the quality of other Crowood books. The text was good and Mick Walker is a known and respected as well as knowledgable motorcycle journalist.However, the pictures, of which could have been the most valuable part of this book, were for the most part, worthless. They were clearly photos of photos. Most of the photos of the bikes were so dark, particularly of the engines, as to be valueless.Cheers, VTH

My 8 year old daughter and I read this book over the Kwanzaa holiday (2003) and enjoyed it. It has good vocabulary and the story is okay. It portrays a working class African-American family in a very positive way. We were surprised by the other reader's comment because it never occurred to us that the two bully characters were white. One, Gilbert, may be, the other, Marcus, clearly is not. Both characters are featured in the illustrations. Overall, the book is quite multi-cultural. I agree that the reader will not learn a lot about Kwanzaa but it is a pretty good book.

This book does nothing but steriotype how 2 white boys pick on a black child. As an African American, I am deeply disappointed that the book does nothing to tell the world about the wonderful holiday of Kwanzaa. How is the world to find out anything about our sacred holiday when you have to wade through 100 pages of "All whites are terrible" steriotypes. In summation, this book was poorly written and does nothing to further the black cause.

I have been reading trying to figure out what Spiritual Direction is all about as I seek out a spiritual director. For David Benner, spiritual direction is mostly about prayer. The Spiritual Director is praying for and helping the person receiving the spiritual direction to pray and connect more fully to God.Benner is a counselor. So he spends some time differentiating Spiritual Direction from counseling."...I am concerned about the predominantly therapeutic face of soul care in our culture's church and society. We have entrusted the care of the inner life of persons to experts who understand their role primarily in problem-solving and therapeutic terms. But therapeutic soul care should not be the model of Christian soul care. Nor should clinically trained professionals be relied on to provide the bulk of such care. While counselors and therapists have an important role to play in restoring wholeness that has been lost, spiritual friends and directors have an equally important role in helping others become all they were intended to be. It is my hope that the predominantly therapeutic face of contemporary Christian soul care will be balanced by an increasingly spiritual one as more Christians offer themselves in relationships of sacred companionship. The care of souls is much too important to be left to clinical professionals."Spiritual Direction is less about `fixing people' than joining with them in a spiritual journey. So Benner presents four different models of spiritual direction. The first is the more traditional one of one formal model of spiritual direction. You have a director and you visit with them about once a month relating your spiritual life and prayer to them and the help guide you in your journey.The second is the spiritual companion. This is more like a deep friendship. It still includes spiritual direction, but it is more mutual direction and there is a relationship that exists beyond the spiritual direction.The third is the small group spiritual direction model. Benner is in favor of this because he believe that one on one spiritual direction will never be able to reach as many people as need spiritual direction. This is different from a traditional small group but probably more comfortable for many because in spite of the differences from a small group, it still feels familiar.The fourth model is marriage as spiritual direction. I am most skeptical about this model. But I can see how it would work for some. Like spiritual companions, the marriage model has a relationship that is far beyond the spiritual direction. Benner and his wife have done this mutually (both seeking direction from the other as different intentional sessions). But currently Benner only seeks direction from his wife and she has a separate spiritual director.Regardless of the method, there are three main goals for spiritual direction. (1) becoming a great lover, (2) becoming whole and holy, and (3) becoming our true self-in-Christ. What impresses me about spiritual direction is that it is a model for spiritual growth that takes seriously growth over a lifetime. It does not require straight line growth or a particular model. Instead it takes seriously the role of community (and the broader church). It is not a model of spiritual growth that is just `me and Jesus against the world'.

This book provides an invaluable introduction to spiritual direction (I'm a newbie). The author and I are both Protestants, which makes it easier for me to understand what he's talking about. Just as the author, I have also found the spirituality as offered by the Protestant tradition to be wonderful, but falls short in attuning to God's presence. The first part, Spiritual Friendship, obviously, is important for the author since he placed it in the beginning, but is not as practical as spiritual direction (part two) in which he provided spiritual direction dialogues. I love part two because it provides ways to help people to be more attuned to God's presence, which address the insufficiency of the Protestant tradition. I also find part three (spiritual direction among small groups) extremely helpful. Due to the popularity of the small group ministry, the suggestions in this book can balance the current situation that is leaned toward cognitive Bible studies.

I am reading this book as it was recommended by our minister for a small group. I do underline and mark key concepts as I read and I have done quite a bit in this book. I like the concepts in this book and the theory of spiritual friendship, but it leaves me feeling a bit unsettled. It seems like such a simple concept, spiritual friendship, but it's actually difficult to achieve, mostly because it requires solitude and stillness in ourselves. I find that not being able to control others makes this friendship almost impossible to find. It brings up more questions than answers for me and I'd like to see specific examples of various scenarios to help us to actually go about finding and developing these spiritual friendships.Overall, I'd recommend this book to small groups or those interested in growing in relationship with others.

I have no desire to become a Spiritual Director but a friend of mine, who is, gave this book to me after a conversation we had about my longing to find others interested in 'going deeper'. I do wish to help other women grow in their faith but most Bible Study groups I've been involved in don't generally move the needle. This book has been a tremendous help to me in understanding my yearn for myself and others. I had to give the book back but not before I bought a copy for myself. I'll be reading it again.

This book is an exceptionally good introduction to the meaning of personal relationships that are called "spiritual friendship" and " spiritual direction". Good spiritual formation doesn't happen well on a purely individual level. It's important to have some trusted person(s) with whom one can discuss just about anything and be vulnerable and open. American Protestant Christianity in particular has been too individualistic for it's own good. The "just me and Jesus" mindset works out little better than "just me" without a third person who is just as committed to life as a spiritual journey being there to observe and help discern the direction of the Holy Spirit in one's life.David Benner does a very good job of clearly describing the qualities and characteristics of spiritual friendship and spiritual direction, how they differ from each other and from other similar relationships like counseling, life coaching, discipleship, etc. and how then can be combined in a small group setting or (even!) within the marriage relationship. I highly recommend this book for those who want a good basic understanding of what it means to be "sacred companions". This is a much needed ministry within the church today. I'm very thankful for the people who have filled this role in my life.

This topic is new to me. I had a cursory knowledge of the benefits of spiritual friendship but didn't realize the depth of possibilities of soul friendship. I look forward to applying this new understanding in a relationship with a Christian friend. It also addresses how to incorporate this type of spiritual friendship in marriage. An insightful read!

James Breakwell is a professional comedy writer and amateur father of four girls, ages eight and under. He is best known for his family-humor Twitter account @XplodingUnicorn, which boats more than one million followers and has been featured on media outlets around the world. Most parenting books take a positive outlook on children. Parents know better. Breakwell takes a more cynical view of children and parenting, which is good because the Zombie Apocalypse is no time for Pollyannas.This book is chock full of useful* information** that you'll need when hell is upon us. Chapters include a list of dos and don'ts, along with charts and tables so that you know it is a Very Serious Bookâ„¢. It also has some funny, poorly-drawn comics in case words are too much for you to handle.The worst may never happen, but if it does, you'll be glad you read this book.

I laughed so friggin' hard at this book I'm sure I got looks while I was reading it on the bus. But I didn't notice because I was laughing too hard. I've already bought a copy of this for my Mom! Yes, some of the jokes rely on sitcom family stereotypes (the "inept dad" stereotype being the predominant one). And yes, I don't have any kids myself. However, the humor of there is so much humor based in truth. Anyone who's spent any time with any kids knows the truth of the dangers of a temper tantrum!My favorite part about this book is how it covers so many things that other zombie lore glosses over. The idea that disposable diapers will be a new form of currency rings very true. Plus, how many other zombie stories talk about how children are just inherently good at finding dangerous things? "It takes skill to make an inert wooden crib spontaneously burst into flames, but if anyone can do it, it's a six-month-old." That's why there are so many warning labels on toys. That's why being a parent in the zombie apocalypse is so dangerous for all parties!But the book doesn't spend the whole time complaining. There's actually some good advice in here. Like how most guidebooks would tell you to remove a staircase and use a retractable ladder to keep the second floor zombie free. Breakwell reminds you that carrying a baby, plus loot, means you're not climbing up that ladder. He also talks about how escaping from zombies, with your family intact, is more about situational awareness than actual speed. Then there's the chapter on punishments where he talks about punishment only being effective if the kid understands why they're in trouble.Some of the best parts of this book are about using your children to your advantage. Using their natural talent to create messes to make your house an obstacle course for zombie or looter. Using their smaller size to help you loot more places (not to mention their enthusiasm at getting to take home whatever they want). They also come with some very useful accessories, like strollers and toys that can be used as weapons. Like a mini-van that can still play DVDs even after the house has lost power.I absolutely loved this book. I shared some lines with my Mom and she wanted a copy. There are cartoons, charts and other visuals and the book is short so it's easy to stay engaged the entire time.

Twitter celebrity, amateur dad and professional writer doesn't give himself enough credit. He's clearly a professional dad too! If there's something you didn't know about parenthood or even if you did, this book is for YOU. You've NEVER experienced the Zombie Apocalypse. YET! Neither has James but he's what your'e not - PREPARED. And willing to share much needed insight, details, graphs, tables and lists of Do's and Don'ts because you will have NO time to think when the zombies strike, as zombies are prone to. Best of all? The writing style is easy, breezy and light so you won't even know you're preparing for the zombie apocalypse. But lo and behold, you will have prepared! Even the Centers for Disease Control with their presumably helpful tips in the event of a zombie apocalypse don't cover all the behaviors and logistics that James does. Neither does the Department of Homeland Security. And they won't be around to save you, only you will IF you've read THIS book. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I state that the survival of the species depends on this one book. If you're not a parent, get some kids NOW! There won't be any time during the apocalypse to borrow some. The closest you'll get to is hoping people you know have passed on and left kids behind and we know that doesn't come without it's own risks. The adults will likely be zombies first. Kids are your insurance. As is this book. What I found most helpful were the flowcharts because they help you visualize what you should do in a logical fashion and not the erratic manner in which your mind will race when the zombiecalypse is upon us. And get you killed. If, like me, you are in the nation's capital, you've already seen the signs. Oh, it's coming! I'd pay 99c for an app with the flowcharts alone. The U.K. may pay 99p which can only be great for America, what with the exchange rate and all. Canada might have to pay 9.99 for the app - if they ever figure out an exchange rate. Meanwhile, the book is a steal when you realize your insurance will NOT work, immigration is the least of your worries and there are none of the conveniences you've let yourself become accustomed to. The helpful tips in this book will be all you've got and not a moment too soon. What are you waiting for? Don't become a zombie and don't let your kids turn into miniature zombies too. Those who've read the book will be equipped to take you out. And that may not be how you'd hoped to go.
