It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Professor Ira N. Levine last month (December 2015). I was among the first students in his debut class in quantum chemistry back in the late 1960's. We used the zeroth edition of this book as it was being written, delivered to the students - in mimeograph form - one chapter at a time by Prof. Levine. As a hobby, I've purchased and read subsequent editions over the years even though my professional career took me into engineering rather than theoretical chemistry.The book has remained at the pinnacle of QC texts for advanced undergraduate, graduate, and self-study use. This 7th edition is no exception. Here's why: (1) it covers the necessary background mathematics in an integrated, as-needed manner, (2) all topics are treated with an appropriate "goldilocks" degree of rigor, neither overly formalized nor overly simplified, (3) the text is supplemented by excellent - sometimes quite challenging - problem sets, (4) numerous footnotes to the literature are given throughout the book for students who want to chase down subtle points, and (5) modern topics in QC, such as computational electron-correlation and molecular dynamics methods, are fully discussed. Overall, the text is written with great clarity and precision.This is not a textbook of quantum physics generally, but of quantum chemistry specifically. There are the obligatory explanations about the counter-intuitive nature of quantum mechanics along with various historical digressions about the development of non-classical physics. But this is a chemistry book. And it's among the best.

Great price, but page 1 of chapter 1 is just ... not there. I’m worried there will be more missing pages. Get the hardcover if you can.

Levine's Quantum Chemistry is one of the best books to understand quantum chemistry. It provides a rigorous foundation for students pursuing a career in theoretical chemistry. Once a student finishes reading this book, he or she can quickly​ go to the more specialized books like Szabo and Ostlund's Modern Quantum Chemistry.

Book itself is excellent but when it arrived there was some pages wrinkled. Quality of the India Pearson printing is good but something happened during the delivery I believe, but because the price was amazingly low I'll endure. The other choice did cost over $200 which a bit too much for me.

I have gone through many books on quantum and this one is by far my favorite. The explanations are clear, derivations are concise, easy to follow and straightforward.

It uses quantum mechanics to explain the basis of chemistry. The math is typical of a book on this topic but it is explained one step at a time.

I wouldn't have been able to pass my P-chem class without this book, it was a life saver.

Terrific book for sophomore students in chemistry who are interested in theoretical work. Easy to catch up with and tons of fundamental knowledge to dig up.

About the Author

Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

This textbook came in perfect condition. It was essential for passing for the year, the material is well written and I definitely would recommend to a friend. The material was easy to understand if you read the book. The book does a decent job with describing the concepts in the class. I passed the class with this book, the professor literally read straight out of the book for every lecture... so i read the book instead of going to class. The book is soft covered and was nice and bright. it came in great condition for being a used book and I am very happy with the book. If i needed to take the course again I would buy the textbook. If you ever have to take intro to criminal justice buy this book! If you're interested in intro to criminal justice buy this book! Or just buy the book just because. I would really encourage you to get this book though. It is an easy read and i am very pleased with the quality of the text book. The book was really nice and I do not regret purchasing it. The only thing I wish this book was is cheaper. The cheaper the textbook the better haha. Amazon definitely had the cheaper price compared to other places and the sell back price was decent. I would really encourage you to buy this book for class, you will not regret it and you should do well in the course if you actually do the work! I finished the course with a B, if i would have went to class... the grade would have been higher. I recommend buying the book, reading the book and going to class.

It would be easy to write stories about self-righteous, bigoted, condescending, self-assured people getting what we think they deserve. But then, by taking pleasure in those stories we would become the thing we hate.Flannery does something much more difficult. She writes stories about self-righteous people getting what they least deserve and least believe they need: divine mercy.Her best stories are not so much about justice for the oppressed as about mercy for the oppressors. She understands that the same divine movement that brings justice for the oppressed also offers mercy to their oppressors. Her God is, in the Thomistic sense, simple. His justice is his mercy.Finally, I think an honest reading of Flannery will reveal that most of us are like her characters -- we least deserve what we most need.

Either you adore her work or you hate it. For me, she is the favorite of all favorites. Dark and bizarre but at the same time hilariously funny. There is no author I have re-read as much. As weird as the characters are, I can see myself in most of them.

This is an excellent, wide ranging collection of short stories. There are so many really excellent and entertaining short stories in this work, I hardly know where to begin. It amazes me that Flannery O'Connor is not placed among the very top of American authors. But in truth, i almost never hear anyone mention her name.I am somewhat embarrassed to admit I was unfamiliar with Flannery O'Connor until the last few years. I attribute this to the fact that she is not discussed contemporaneously with other American iconic authors. I first heard of her when I was studying a book on literature by Harold Bloom and he discussed her work. I had begun reading work by William Faulkner and at first was unsettled by his style. Slowly I have begun to gain an appreciation the genre of "Southern Gothic". Flannery O'Connor has her own style which includes, but is not limited to Southern Gothic.Flannery O'Connor has a wry sense of ironic humor which manifests itself throughout her work and can suddenly emerge out of nowhere and surprise the reader. An example of this is the short story "The Crop". At the same time some of her short stories stun me with their violence. Sometimes the two combine as at the end of "A Good Man is Hard to Find". I am not learned enough to know where to place Flannery O'Connor compared to other Southern Gothic authors, but she may be my favorite, with Harper Lee and Carson McCullers close behind.

The greatest accomplishment of O'Connor's writing is that she makes you think. She begs you to look inside yourself as you read her stories and ask yourself hard questions IF you dare or are brave enough. Am I like that? Have I done that or said that or thought like that??? Then she asks you to destroy that wrong thinking. A great author with a deeply intellectual and spiritual mind that shows so clearly in these Simple Stories about life.

One can hardly complain about the price of this "complete" edition of Kipling, but the formatting leaves out much of the typography - italics, etc. - that makes the printed books a much greater pleasure to read. I would willingly pay more for a better-produced version.

Ever since I came upon "The Complete Stories of Flannery O'Connor" (while serving in the military overseas) this collection has been an integral part of my life. All of the stories have something of value in them, even the weaker ones; but an attentive reading of the best ones will leave an indelible impression: for example, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", "Good Country People", "A View of the Woods", "The Enduring Chill", "Revelation". Some readers find O'Connor's fiction depressing but I do not. I never have. I enjoy these stories, savor them and return to them again and again. An important point to consider is that O'Connor's characters are usually damnable but are rarely, if ever, actually damned. A theology of hope-for-all permeates her fiction.Of all these stories, I think it's "The Displaced Person" that pleases me most. Its length is less than a novel but it has about it the moral, historical and spiritual proportions of a great epic. Its ironic rendering of human folly and ignorance comes across with patient objectivity and humor, and so free of contempt as to seem miraculous. It's a rare writer who can portray such rustic or insufferable characters so believably on the one hand; but on the other, free of the taint of hatred or even condescension.

Kipling's work itself is outstanding. He writes about much more than the jungle creatures in colonial India, covering winter areas in Londonesque style. There's a lot of thought and humanity in his words. I'm entertained, instructed and impressed with his words.The only thing preventing 5 stars is the Kindle delivery method, which tends to be tedious finding what you want to read if it's out of order. I prefer real books, but for the price of these complete works how can I complain?

This book is full of many great suggestions on how to make your code better, with good solid explanations of why. When the author is stating an opinion he says so, and other times refers the reader back to the Apple documentation that the recommendation is based on. I have adopted several of the suggestions into my day to day coding. This is a great book that you should make time to read.

This is the best book I have seen regarding best practices for actually coding Objective-C. There are endless books available on coding for iOS and OSX, but all simply gloss over the actual Objective-C language. Many cover the basics, but none to date have gone into the detail this book does.I have been coding for over 30 years, starting in Pascal, then C, then C++, then Java. Moving back to the C world (via Objective-C) after years of Java was painful, but I'm getting good at it again. This book is taking me to the level where I feel truly proficient at coding in Objective-C, not just "getting by".The guidelines throughout this book are so useful that I'm refactoring my entire codebase to implement as many of these guidelines as necessary.If you're like I was with Objective-C - able to get things working, but all the while knowing you'd be a bit embarrassed if a "real" objective-c expert saw your code, have no fear, this book will give you the knowledge to BE that expert.Hats off to Matt Galloway for writing a concise, east-to-understand, invaluable book on Objective-C.

I have been developing in Objective-C for 5 years and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing style is engaging and easy to follow. There are quite a few gems inside. A few topics are pretty simple, even for beginners. Some of the chapters are deep enough to have even advanced objc programmers saying, "Oh, that's how that works!" A good example is the chapter on "associated objects."While we are all learning how to do a Swift right, this will improve our Objective-C code. Well done.

This book holds a unique place on my bookshelf - it's a software book that can be read 10 pages at a time, is always enlightening, and won't go out of style (until we all convert to Swift). It's the best, most practical book I've bought in my iOS/Objective C development journey. The core premise of the book is to cover topical areas (categories, blocks, GCD, et. al.) and provide both a fundamental understanding of the topic, how to apply it, pitfalls, etc. It moved me past the intermediate/self taught phase. I can't recommend it highly enough.

You'll still learn a lot even in 2018 but the fact that it's not updated and has too much unnecessary explanatory stuff is annoying. For example, It could do much better for GCD and less explaining about manual reference counting, I mean WHO cares about Manual reference counting on 2014+ let alone its 2018 now. I would purchase something better with my money.

This book is breathtaking. From the moment that I turn the first page, I just couldn't stop reading. If you are an objective-c programmer, buy one, and read twice.

What a useful book. Teaches you principles any expert objective c and ios developer should know. Highly recommended, one of those rare books that take you to the next level by being concise, informative, and wrll written.

Better than I thought. Straight to the point. Many of the instructions are applicable to Swift and many aren't

This is a good introduction to signing with your baby. Along with giving you signs to use it also has a lot of background information about sign and the pros and cons of using sign with your baby. I

The book is in great shape and the CD was sealed in packaging. However, after trying to play it on two DVD players, the disk doesn't work. First the menu would not appear and then when it did the segments were garbled, rendering it useless. We bought this book because it came with a DVD.

Received within 5 days. Was not pleased. The books front cover and first 5 pages seem to have water damaged and were curled, the CD was ok.

I ordered this book over a month ago and I was supposed to receive it weeks ago, and I am still waiting.. I have filed a claim & everything, DON'T BUY from here!! My advice, find it somewhere else.. This was 10$ wasted! I wanted to have it before my little one arrives, and she will be here in the next few weeks, and I still haven't got my money back or the book!

This book answered all my questions and then some, a necessary manual everyone should have this as reference. Great work.

Out dated like me. I still use the Office 2000 product today on our new computer. Something like well worn jeans.

The book (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies)is like new. I could hardly believe when I open the package and saw the book. The speed at when it reaches me was also excellent. I would encourage anyone to conduct business it them.

I've read several "Dummies" series - including the individual books on the MS Office 2000 applications, like "Excel 2000 for Dummies" and have in the past found them to be enjoyable, well organized, and helpful. "Dummies" books aren't just written for newcomers, but also those looking for a brush-up - unfortunately, the authors of this book seem to have lost all sight of who their intended audience is.The material is so remedial that it begs the question "If you have to be instructed to click on 'File -> Open' to open a new document/spreadsheet/database, what on earth are you possibly using MS Office 2000 for?" If you have to be instructed on fundamental basics, you probably don't have much use for the instructions on creating an ACCESS database. If your knowledge of e-mail, word processing, or other simple functions is limited, your time would be better served taking a general computer class or reading a different "basics" book that covers fundamental software knowledge - not one suite.With the individual "Dummies" book for any of the applications, you're able to skip over the fundamental information and refresh your memory on more difficult tasks or expand your acquaintence to a working knowledge of the program. "Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies" does not allow this freedom. They've attempted to write about a huge subject in 438 pages (sans index) and the authors fall short here of anything but a simplistic recant of fundamental skills and bland humor. For this reason, I give it 3 stars.That said, if you do need to learn fundamental office skills, and are comfortable with the "Dummies" style, this is a nicely priced book with a great index. WONDERFUL index!!! Even I found the index useful for a couple of references I was looking for and didn't want to skim the entire section on "Storing 'STUFF' in ACCESS".

I must note that I was slightly misled by the other reviews into thinking that this book would be just right for the lower intermediate to intermediate user. Coverage of Office is thin, but quite wide, even including making web pages. However, it falls short of an intermediate user's expectations and topics hardly go any deeper than an introductory tutorial.On the plus side the author has put in a great deal of effort and spends a lot of time making concepts and procedures understandable to the uninitiated and makes heavy use of buletted tips, tricks and summaries that make it easy to remember.The strength of this book is in introducing those first time users to Office that have very little knowledge about what most would consider essential knowledge. I also don't think you will find anything useful if you are moving from Office 97 to Office 2000. This is more of an introduction to Office itself, rather than Office 2000.If you are a complete beginner in any of the Office applications then I think this is a great book. This includes those of you who still feel intimidated by Microsoft Office, as well as people who might be experienced in Word but are just starting out with Excel or PowerPoint for example.If you are anywhere past a beginner, such as a regular user, capable of most day to day tasks, then this book won't give you any more insight than you already have. You might find some pieces of information useful, such as shortcut keys and a lot of tips, but most of the book will go unused.

What a fun book! Lots of detailed information about the game of ice hockey. My 8 year old son can't get enough information about the sport and this was perfect for him. Lots of information but broken down into terms that are easy for children to understand. I'd recommend to any child interested in learning fun facts about the game.

Bought this book for my 8 year old son. He loves hockey, reading and science so it seemed like a good combination. The book is easy to read, has lots of pictures, and interesting information. Covers everything- how the ice is made, how movement on the ice works, pucks, sticks, shots, equipment, etc etc. For a kid who really likes to know how things work, it's perfect. And for a mom who finds the game super interesting, it was a fun read for me too.

Great for reading together with 8 year old. While reading, it is easy to move from the topic of hockey to fundamental science concepts: friction, gravity, angles, acceleration, etc.

This is an easy read. Works for kids and adults. It contains the necessary content to understand hockey play and rules.

Gave as a gift and the recipient was a 9 year old boy and he was thrilled with the book.
