Review

“With accessible anecdotes and reasoned speculation, Johnson and Meany’s story of graphene will delight popular-science fans.”  —Booklist          “Graphene is a rarity: a book about a complex scientific subject that not only informs and enlightens but also entertains the reader. I came out of this with a new appreciation for something I’d known little about before but now realize is future-shaping. Read this book and behold a miracle of tomorrow.”   —Allen Steele, Hugo and Heinlein Award–winning science fiction author“Purely carbon, graphene is a remarkable material whose properties amaze us and whose applications span all of human activity—from nanotechnology to interstellar flight—maybe even to the evolution of humans. This book delves into the who, what, where, when, why, and how of graphene, with interesting stories and facts, suggesting possibilities that Johnson and Meany say may change the world. With a mix of physics, engineering, history, and culture, there is much to learn as well as to be entertained by here.”   —Dr. Louis Friedman, cofounder and executive director emeritus, the Planetary Society“Graphene is an enjoyable tour of the past, present, and future of the simplest form of carbon. It’s a balanced exploration of the promises of graphene for technology, engineering, and health, along with the risks and challenges. With plenty of historical anecdotes, scientific primers, and forward-thinking speculation, the authors place graphene and graphene-like materials into familiar contexts.”   —Matthew R. Francis, physicist and science writer, BowlerHatScience.org“An enjoyable ride through the history and science of carbon materials, with graphene as the focus of a larger discussion of business, chemical periodicity, unique molecules, and a science-driven future. The authors do a wonderful job describing the promise, problems, pitfalls, and possibilities that likely await graphene—this newest entry into the vibrant world of material science.”   —Monty Fetterolf, Professor of Chemistry and Endowed Chair, University of South Carolina Aiken

Really not at all what I was expecting, but pleasantly surprised nonetheless. 'Graphene' delivers a relatively complex scientific topic in a clear and concise manner than anyone can understand. The book itself is easy to read and easy to follow, and uses real world examples to explain complex scientific phenomena. It begins with some historical background on the element Carbon itself, and really the foundation of the sciences we know as chemistry, physics, and biology today and uses this foundation to build on practical applications as well as potential scientific applications, from the immediately realizable to those beyond the realm of anything other than the imagination. The best way to describe the book is 'non-fiction science fiction'. I really enjoyed reading it, and think that it could certainly be used as a supplemental text in a lecture series on physical chemistry or materials science.

It's ok. The book also includes a history of carbon chemistry as has developed over the last 2 hundred years. Lots of references to Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry. I thought the "revolutionize the world" part of the book was weak. I think perhaps the subject matter is too early. Maybe someday (maybe even likely some day) graphene will be a wonder material and we will know what it can do and likely will do. For the most part right now, the book is really a collection of conjectures.

Graphene is a rarity: a book about a complex scientific subject that not only informs and enlightens but also entertains. I came out of this with a new appreciation for something I’d known little about before and now realize will be shaping the future. I enjoyed it so much, purchase three additional copies for friends and co-workers. Definitely a fun read!

I saw a presentation by the authors, and I decided to try this book. I was not disappointed. This is science writing with clarity to rival Isaac Asimov or Stephen Jay Gould. The authors meticulously explore the possibilities of graphene, the risks, and the potential letdown. You won’t get one-sided cheerleading here. What you will get is informed.I’ll be looking for more from these authors.

Fantastic combination of entry-level explanations and a higher-level look into the potential uses of this supermaterial. A quality read from an experienced author-slash-NASA scientist, and a PhD researcher who has an inside view into the true potential of the material. Will leave you feeling excited about the future and what it may hold.

Great authoritative book on a new topic of material science. (Educate yourself before you invest.)

Very informative book. The authors covered a lot of aspects of the history, present, and future of graphene. I'm excited to see what will happen in the future!

Whether you're an expert wanting to round out their knowledge or a layman wanting to really get to know the topic, this book is for you.
