Sweeney is a good author, and the two-volume Gun Digest Book of the 1911 is a must-have for any gun owner.There is limited DIY info in Vol. 1 (and I'm *still* waiting for Vol. 2), but there is some troubleshooting info. The general information on ammunition, training and competition will be useful to novices.I enjoyed the sections on the specific brands. I won't ever buy one of these, but reading their pros and cons helps put my own humble budget 1911 in perspective.I couldn't find a publication date on the book, or a copyright, so I'm not sure when this was actually printed (the descriptions in AZ are often *not* for the actual book that is shipped, if there are multiple printings). I thought that was a bit odd.No real drawbacks to this book, a good addition to any owner's library.

This is an interesting and well-written book, with lots of good photos. It didn't dwell as much on the old original 1911 A1 as I had hoped. Of course, there is SO much stuff out there on the 1911, that I guess Sweeney had to do something different to get readership.I appreciated the summary of so many custom variants on the 1911. I wasn't aware of most of them. And the reviews covered a depth of insight that I could never get from a few minutes at the range with these weapons. I did feel that there were too many times Sweeney talked about taking the gun to your personal gunsmith for tuning. I guess that not many of us have direct access to "our own gunsmith" or to the resources to be able to afford such a luxury. Or to firing tens of thousands of ball ammo and then switching to custom loads to fully check out a weapon.All in all, this was a great book for the price.

There are few books or articles I have not read on the 1911 and this book is by far the best! Patrick Sweeney has a gift in turning a "how to" book into an easy page turner and written in simple Engish. I often refer it to reloaders as the chapter Patrick has on reloading packs more helpful information and tips then most reloading books hundreds of pages long! I can't recommend it enough! I own dozens of custom 1911's and have talked to and researched many sources, but for the money...this is a bargain!

The Gun Digest books for the 1911, volumes 1 and 2, are the best reference work available for 1911 owners, shooters and enthusiasts. Short of the Kunhausen manuals for the 1911, they are probably the most complete reference work available. Well edited and quite readable, the information is organized logically and easy to follow. The Kindle versions suffer from some slight formatting issues, but are easier to carry around than the paperbacks.

I will readily admit to being a rabid fan of John Browning's Model 0f 1911 pistol. That usually means anything I find to read about the model I do, though the majority of it is just rehashing the same information. This books doesn't provide any real insight into the model or design that hasn't already been publish in a dozen other books. But what the author does is give a good overview of the weapon and some models, uses and experiences he has had with it himself. Patrick Sweeney is a gunsmith, competitor and writer and it shows. His writing is easy to read and understand without being overly simple. The book works well for casual reading or reference. That said I would recommend a glance through a copy at a local book store before buying for most people. For a very good book about the history and linage of the wonderful M1911 pistol I recommend a look at Patrick's newest book, 1911 The First Hundred Years.

Great read- excellent reference. This author is a definite authority on all thing guns and it shows in this book. A definite bargain.. THANK YOU

The "Gun Digest Book of the 1911" by Patrick Sweeney is must reading for any fan of 1911 model pistol. Sweeney's style is enjoyably readable, and the information provided is both informative and entertaining. If you appreciate John Browning's masterpiece pistol and want to gain a better understanding of how it works and what can be done to make it work just a little better, you have to read this book.

I've read many of Thibaut Meurisse's books, but this one is probably my favorite. I think that too many people fail to understand their own emotions and how they motivate them through life. The world would certainly be a better place if we all had a better understanding of what is actually driving us forward in life, and why. We should question why we desire the things we do, and if acquiring them actually benefits us in any real and positive way. This book breaks down the human ego and emotions in an easy to understand fashion, blending psychology and philosophy with steps you can take to improve your life, starting today. Read it, it'll make you a better person. And isn't that what we all came here for?

I’m a lifelong introvert and software developer. I’ve struggled in the past working with difficult people. This book helped me disassociate with certain narratives I’ve been telling myself for years (e.g. “my way is correct” or “so and so is detrimental to our team”). The mental gymnastics I’ve been playing for years has only succeeded on causing me suffering. Kudos to the author for his advice to “try to spend an entire week without complaining and see what happens” because “we become what we think about all day long”

I thought that this book was an okay read.I have read a variety of other self-help books and I did like how this one is more clean cut and to the point, not wordy at all. But that is also the draw back. There is a lot of white space in the book. The actual reading of the book (not the printed step-by-step workbook at the end) is 184 pages. I feel like a lot of the answers you could google on the internet and learn there, but it is nice that it’s all complied in a book. So those are my thoughts. I like how you can tell the author has read many other books because he takes snip-its from well-known books. All of the principles he mentions are the basics / principles of self-help books. I would say this would be a great starter for someone beginning to read self-help books because it has all of the basics. Another suggestion is to change the look of the front cover so it’s more appealing.Overall, I give it 3 stars.

I love purchasing self help/improvement books so much that at times, I feel that they can be repetitive ,so I start skimming through the book and before I know it- I’ve read “most”of the book. Master Your Emotions was a book that I chose based on amazon reviews and , without a doubt, I loved it and read from cover to cover The author reviews emotions that can hold us back and how we can improve. It was exactly what I was looking for in this period of my life and I hope to purchase another book to give as a gift. Well written in an easy to read style. Also, I found it very informative. The chapter on the ego was interesting and different in this type of book. So was,the chapter on how Dopamine affects the brain was good. How emotions are formed and letting them go are also covered. Informative and enjoyable.

A great book about 'blacks & whites' of our emotions. Techniques and ways to handle them constructively. Well written, very structured. A fantastic overwiew of the subject, that is too often presented in a complicated way in the psychology literature. A guide how to live a better, fuller life.

The author writes clearly without the “ Mumbo jumbo” of some other books I have read. He gives straightforward reasons why we do what we do, and ways of controlling our negativity. You will learn more from this book than a Psych 101 in college!

It was very enlightening to ones own emotions, good and bad. It also taught me other avenues to handling stress and anger.

I bought this book because it was recommended for my daughter's homeschool curriculum, and it wasn't available at our local library. I had no idea how much our family was going to enjoy this charming story. The intrepid protagonist wants to bake an apple pie, but the market is closed. So she sets off a journey around the world to gather all the best quality ingredients for the perfect apple pie. The illustrations are charming and contain a wealth of details to be noticed in numerous re-readings. The story is told both well and simply, and the twist on the last page is the stuff great picture books are made of.The recipe for apple pie at the end of the book is simple and delicious, and it makes use of all the ingredients gathered in the story.We used the story for a mapping lesson as well charted the protagonist's journey on our world map on the wall. We used it for a cooking lesson. We used it for a science lesson (how are sugar and butter made, and how is salt retrieved from sea water.) We used it to have fun story time together, and that was the best of all.Now I am glad the library didn't have it. Having purchased it, I anticipate my family enjoying it for years to come.

We bought his book because it was suggested in our kindergarten curriculum, and I'm so glad we did!!! It is adorable and fun and we were able to pull out our map and try to locate the different places they traveled. We then made Apple pie from the recipe in the back of the book.

Our daughter homeschools and for kindergarten/first grade she uses "Five in a Row" curriculum. This is one of the books in that curricula - and they read it every school day for 5 days and then do an acitivity that goes along with it. This one tells you where you go around the world to find the ingredients - so you have geography lessons, reading lessons, math lessons with the ingredients - and can even make the pie as a project! Great book for 4-6 year olds.

This book will be used as the storyline for a class play. We will sing a folk song from the countries that are mentioned in the story. The program will be presented to the student body and parents. It is an AR point, which means the students will have an opportunity to earn points for reading this book.

A delightful picture book for children ages 3 to 8 yrs. -- Even includes a good basic recipe for apple pie!My three year old grandson loves this book and he also loves to make apple pie -- next we'll have to see the world together--maybe starting next year!

Lovely book! I read it to my kindergarten class and they loved knowing where different things came from. It was an excellent introduction to food coming from different places and to how big the world really was.

This is a great story, and not for kids alone! My husband and I like this story (and the others by the same author) just as much as the kids like it! It is whimsically well written, and the illustrations are fantastic! This book has been read so many times, we are on our third copy of the book! HIghly recommended, this is a family favorite, and we dearly love our books!

This was a fun book to share with my children. We were able to discuss the different countries that the baker visits, and recall the ingredients needed to make an apple pie. A delightful book!

I am very disappointed with the quality of this coloring book. I was getting this for my mom and my sister to share because they are obsessed with the new coloring craze and they both love birds. The quality of this book is terrible. I can't believe I even paid for it. I'm almost positive I could go to any craft store (or Dollar Store) and find a better quality book. The only positive of the book is the pages are very high quality (i.e. if you like to use gel pen or fine tip markers) and the ink won't bleed thru. But other than that, there is nothing good about this book. There are a total of 25 pages worth of coloring material (all of the coloring page designs have a blank back except for the first coloring page that has a line for you to put your name on). There are hundreds of different species of birds and the book only focuses on a couple breeds (i.e. tons of owls and humming birds). As far as design goes, the pictures look very pixelated. It looks as though the drawings were originally much smaller then expanded just to fit the size of the page. (Similar to finding a small picture on the internet, copying and pasting it too Word/PowerPoint, expanding the photo then realizing the bigger picture is fuzzy. Sorry if that is a little confusing, it's the only way I knew how to explain it.) There is also no consistency between the design of the birds. It's very visible that there were at least five different designers to create the drawings found in the book. Now I know what you're probably thinking, "isn't having different designs a good thing?" Not so in this book. Some of the designs look like they were designed for little kids while others look professional. Some are easy while others have such intricate designs even my sister who has good eyesight can't do. Also, the title "BIRDS" really does mean just birds. The designs are only of birds. No flowers or scenery, just birds, despite what the cover may have you believe.I really hate to write bad reviews for products but this was worth it. The quality of coloring books that you can find at your local craft store are much better than this and a better price as well! Don't waste your hard earned money on this!

The cover is very deceptive. You think the book is full of scenes similar to the cover, but instead, there are single cartoon-like birds (pelicans, toucans, storks, parrots) on a blank white page. There are 3 pages out of 25 that I MIGHT enjoy coloring. Most pictures are highly pixilated, and they look like they have been taken from a clip art and blown up bigger. Had I'd been able to see a couple of the coloring pages, I would not have bought it. I would not consider giving this to an adult to color.

The book is fun to work with, but when they put it together, the pages were installed backward. Instead of turning the page and seeing the bird on the right, they are on the left... not to big a deal. Also their use of black can overwhelm the design. Still fun.

Didn't like the pictures, they are goofy.

Each page has one bird - seems very simple - more like for a child.

Did not care for the art work.

Very dissapointed in both of the books I have just received mainly the bird one if I had been able to veiw the inside I would not have bought this. The printing is blurred and in other places the design is crowded

About the Author

Kenji Yoshino is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law.  A graduate of Yale Law School, where he taught from 1998 to 2008, he is the author of Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights and A Thousand Times More Fair: What Shakespeare's Plays Teach Us About Justice. Yoshino's writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. He lives in New York with his husband and two children.

I'll say this book is nearly flawless. The only flaws are a few adverbs and clunky metaphors: the author loves the latter, and some soar. Others land with with a thud and distract you from the flow of the narrative. However, except for these idiosyncrasies, the narrative races. I needed a racing narrative because I wanted to get myself up to speed for the marriage arguments at the Supreme Court that, as of this writing, are coming up in a few days. The author does an excellent job not only in retelling the history of the issue of gay marriage, but also of giving the arguments of opponents of gay marriage - whose positions he obviously disagrees with - an honorable presentation. You do not need to be a lawyer to enjoy this book, as other reviewers have stated. The author assumes you are not, and even explains legal concepts that would entertain non-lawyers and lawyers alike - his explanation of en banc review, for example, which would take too long to explain here, but you'd have to pay attention to enjoy. You have to be intelligent, therefore, and curious about the subject; though if you are intelligent, the book would make you curious about the subject. His discussions of his own family, weaving in and out, do not distract from the book's purpose, and keep the reader interested with a little personal decoration. The best part for me was his summary of the testimony at trial. I wanted to read the transcript of the trial in question, but reading transcripts can be dull; this summary was enough, and I accept the author's veracity given the charitable rendering he gave to the other side, whom for me are the demons. (And by the way, he also gives a good argument for not demonizing these people as bigots.) Finally, he provides trial lawyers like me great language for taking differing positions to trial and exposing them to the trial of "sunlight" that, as (former US Supreme Court Justice Louis) Brandeis said, "is said to be the best of disinfectants." Highly recommended.

I absolutely love Speak Now. It breathes life and passion into an otherwise dense legal narrative -- in ways that both lay readers and legal experts will find gripping. And while the book focuses on the trial that brought marriage equality back to California, the author also sets forth a broader (and in my view, very convincing) argument about the benefits of litigation, and especially trials, to uncover the truth more generally. A lot of people assume that trials are useful only for minor or narrow factual disputes and not broad social issues, but Yoshino shows that this isn't the case.Finally, while Yoshino presents and defends a particular perspective on the Prop 8 trial (and trials more generally), the book is also very fair and respectful when it comes to presenting opposing views. The Prop 8 litigation was very controversial among LGBT groups, and Yoshino does a masterful job explaining the competing views among the advocates (and their adversaries).

Wonderfully written account of the case that brought down Prop 8.What I liked about the book was that not only were issues from the trial discussed, but so were things raised during depositions. This provided a fuller account and context for the trial. There was also a lot of background legal history discussed which was interesting.Highly recommended to anyone interested in LGBT history and litigation.

A truly remarkable read... I have basically no legal training, and I was able to follow the narrative from beginning to end. It's not every day that a layperson can pick up a book about the law and find it a true page-turner! This book provides an important explanation of the legal principles involved, but also tells a compelling story about the personal impact of the debate over same-sex marriage.I came away from this book better educated on the legal system, both in terms of the debate over same-sex marriage AND in terms of the importance of the trial process. I'm inspired with hope for a future in which trials like this can change society for the better.

Yoshino has shown that civil trials concerning so-called "legislative facts" can make all the difference in constitutional litigation. The trail held in San Francisco concerning Proposition 8 showed the weakness of the factual and policy-related grounds for opposing marriage equality. If you want to understand the 2015 decision for marriage equality, this book is a good place to begin.
