I was expecting less photos and more text on the history of each major linen manufacturer. THe photos were very good though. Having a price range is good however it would be more useful to give a change in price over the years. These cloths have been collected over a long time and the author should have an idea of the appreciation of the items.A rarity rating would have been useful too.I enjoyed flicking through it but would I have bought it if I hadn't done that first. Maybe not.

What a wonderful surprise I had as I reviewed the vintage tablecloths and were so happy to see so many of my Dad's designs and also see that he was mentioned in many of them. This is the first book I have that recognizes John Madsen as the designer and holder of some patents (which I never knew about). My sister, brother and I have enjoyed the thrill of looking and purchasing his tablecloths and have a nice selection - many of which we remember seeing him work on. This book has helped us so much in recognizing his work and learning more about Wilendure who he worked for. We thank Yvonne Barineau for providing this information in our search. Along the way, Liesel is witness to the atrocities of war, heartbreaking events, love, loss and other life-changing events.I saw the movie The Book Thief several years ago and loved it. When I decided it was time to read the book I was absolutely captivated. Although the book is 550 pages long, I read it in just two days – it was THAT good.The book is different in several ways, ways in which I won’t go into in my review. Suffice it to say that I’m glad I saw the movie first and then read the book. I think I might have been disappointed with the movie version if it had happened in opposite order. This just goes to show how well the author has written this important piece of fictionalized history. The time period, location, mood, characters, etc. come to life as the story unfolds.I was surprised at some of the other reviews, stating that the book was just plain depressing. I’m not at all sure how a book that deals with the systematic extinction of a race of people can be written about in an uplifting, happy way. Yet, the book is so much more than a story about a German girl who is living in Nazi Germany during WWII. There are many lovely, tender elements to be found in The Book Thief. The additional anniversary edition footnotes written by the author (at the end of the book) provide wonderful insight.I think it’s extremely important that all generations read books like The Book Thief. This is part of history and, as poet and philosopher George Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it." This is a book that is emotionally draining, but very much worth the read!

I waited way too long to read this book. I don't even really know why I waited so long, other than Courtney and I started this blog around the same time that I actually bought the book and it took me a while to get to the point where I started reading some of the books that I wanted to read instead of just books that we received requests for.If you follow my blog at all, you know that I love WWII era historical fiction. What I loved about this book is that it showed the lives of average Germans during the war. That's not a perspective I've seen a lot (or ever that I can think of off the top of my head). But Liesel's foster family wasn't exactly average either because they held unfavorable opinions about Jewish people, at least unfavorable by German standards during the war.Another highlight of this story was that it was told from the perspective of Death. It was a bit odd to get used to at first because he jumped around a bit, as Death is wont to do in the course of his work, but once I got used to it, it was a fun way to see things. While death isn't exactly omniscient, he does have access to information that a human narrator wouldn't have.I realize that I'm late enough to this party that you've probably already made up your mind about whether you want to read this book or not, but if you're still on the fence about it, you should absolutely not wait any longer. You're likely to regret it if you do, like I did.Overall I give The Book Thief 5.05 stars.

Agree with all the others giving one or two stars: who in hell thought this was a good book? the style is exasperating and there is no much meat or story. Some say that is because it was intended to young people, but I wonder how young you have to be to enjoy that kind of writing. Tried to come to terms and finish it but I could not waste more time on this.

It's brilliant and accessible; existentially satisfying and faithful to the biblical texts. When I simply can't bring myself to pick up the Bible, or find my own ears and eyes completely deaf and blind to it, her clear yet round-about proclamation always seems to penetrate my numbness: unclogging my ears and unscaling my eyes. Rutledge's corpus has served as a daily devotional for most of this year.

This book does a great job of laying out the particulars of one of the greatest mysteries of the last century. I have a much better grasp now of what actually occurred to these nine who died with no explanation. There have been many theories on what happened at the Dyatlov Pass but I can't say any other book lays out the details as nicely as Death of Nine. And while there is a ton of detail here the book is an easy read. The author lays out the specifics on the individuals who died, their routes, how they went about their days, what they did prior to passing and what investigators found - and didn't find. If you remotely think you might like to know more about the the Dyatlov Pass mystery don't pass on this book. As a side note this book is a great looking book in hand. It has the look and feel of a book from years past which helps take you take you back to this simpler time of this tragedy.

This book is particularly informative as it gives details and diagrams of the autopsy findings of the nine victims. These findings tended to convince me that these were murders carried out by human beings. Theories involving UFO's, Russian military experiments, avalanches, sound waves, Yeti, etc. seem far fetched. The idea that the Mansi tribal members were responsible as they were enraged by the group trespassing on their sacred religious ground is dismissed as that would be totally inconsistent with the previous behavior of the Mansi. There was the usual official Russian behavior to suppress the investigation and to hurry the conclusion that the deaths were due to "overwhelming force." The author of this book states his THEORY as to the cause of the murders is speculative but it is highly interesting. I recommend this book highly.

This is clearly well compiled and thought out. While I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with the conclusion the author presents, her argument is well reasoned. The only substantial improvement I would suggest for her next nonfiction book is citations and a bibliography. This would help strengthen her Dyatlov case as well. That aside, she’s a good writer and she has more than convinced me she’s looked at this from lots of angles.

The 1959 deaths of 9 young Russian "tourists" (hikers) in winter has been the subject of many books. I have read all of them with great interest, and I feel this book comes very close to solving the mystery. Mr. Anderson discusses all of the popular theories and takes a deep look at the autopsy results and and reveals shocking patterns. The book is well-written and I recommend it to anyone who has pondered the baffling deaths of these exceptional people.

Very concise account of the Dyatlov murder. The author presents an extremely well thought out case for foul play from an external source being the cause of this mysterious death of the 9 hikers. Very fact based and closing theories are well thought out.

A good review of the incident with evidence summarized in detail. The conclusion seem more plausible than some I have read--no yetis. The only negative is that the typeface is small on my Kindle and apparently cannot be adjusted.

This is my favorite book, of a few, that I have purchased on the Dyatlov Pass incident. It is less so for the beginner, and rather more so for the intermediate student of the incident. In the book Mr. Anderson includes much detail, along with numerous superb photos, and even of the bodies. Full autopsies are at the back, along with Anderson's summary and discussion of them in the main part of the book. The bodies ended up to be key evidence, of course. Theories as to what happened are examined, along with an introduction to each of the nine hikers. All in all, a superb book on the incident and highly recommended.

Well written and meticulously researched, Launton Anderson brings the past to life in this nonfiction thriller. The book starts in a Soviet era polytechnic university hiking club in the 1960s, and traces the doomed hikers on their journey, first to the abandoned mining town that served as the base camp for their expedition, then to the campsite deep in the Siberian wilderness where they met their grisly end. Even though you know how it is going to end, the book is a gripping page turner from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
