Rex Stout's 1956 novel "Might As Well Be Dead (A Nero Wolfe Mystery Book 27)" is another of his Excellent ones (I'm rating it at 5 stars out of 5). I've got no problems with it whatsoever. The pacing is really good, all the characters well done, and, of course, the writing is wonderful. If you're a Nero Wolfe follower, you don't want to miss this one.

"Might As Well Be Dead" has a crackerjack plot to go with the fascinating characters and stimulating dialogue. Archie says, "When a hippopotamus is peevish it’s a lot of peeve." It also makes for a great story.

This review is of the Kindle edition:Publication date: April 24, 2010Publisher: BantamLanguage: EnglishASIN: B003IYI6YCI have read most of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books but had not previously read this one. I'm glad I hadn't because it was a wonderful treat to be able to read a new to me Nero Wolfe novel after so many years. The treat was made even better by the fact that this one is better than Rex Stout's excellent average. Featuring a depraved murderer and, at the beginning, a mystery with no clues, Wolfe is hard pressed to even find an opening to begin to unravel the solution.

It starts with the murder of a real estate promoter. The boy friend, and perhaps lover, of the wife of the deceased is charged and convicted of the murder.Wolfe becomes in a somewhat unusual manner for him. From there more people are murdered, a huge sum of money is found and other items that will convict the murder.I rarely ever determine the murderer before Wolfe. In this book, I did. See if you can.Just another great book from the man, that along with Erle Stanley Gardner, gave birth to the American mystery and devoted material to it for over 30 years.

Rex Stout is a master of detective fiction. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, his trusty assistant, are so well written and such distinctive personalities. I love their life style; the orchids on the roof, Felix, the master chef, and all of the henchmen who help out on their cases from time to time. I have been reading these stories all my life and usually return to them after several years. I am so glad they have been published again so that I could add some of the books that were out of print.

Having read Stout's collection of Nero Wolfe mysteries, this one rates at the top. The opening scene appears tame and blase but Stout soon has us hooked with a convicted murderer as the.... But I shall not give it away. There should have been a sequel to this one. It's personal

In the typical Rex Stout Nero Wolfe, there are lots of carefully turned and memorable phrases. I read it the first time more than fifteen years ago. This was my second time reading it. It was just as enjoyable as it was the first time.

As always, Red Stout is a master. In this book, he shows off his sleight of hand several times, yet never telegraphs the solution. One of the faithful loses his life in this story, and not much food gets mentioned. However, there are two recipes at the end to make up for that. The roast corn is all you could wish--I tried it.Unlike others in this series, the kindle version is free of errors.
