This very useful book provides the comments of two bourbon experts on the aroma, taste, and finish (nuances perceived after swallowing) of nearly 350 bourbons. Since everyone’s palate is unique, the authors do not rate or provide scores, but they do call attention to some excellent bourbons and to exceptionally good values. Other useful information includes the proof, age, and mash bill when known. Relative price is indicated by the number of dollar signs. Brief notes may include a recommendation in some cases. The bourbons are listed by the producer. The indices contain a helpful list of brands arranged alphabetically by name, proof, special style (such as bottled-in-bond, single barrel, small batch, wheated, etc.) and price. I have over 150 bourbons in my collection, and I always travel with this guide. When I spot a bourbon new to me, I check to see what Reigler and Veach had to say about it. This helps me decide to buy it or not. Think of it as a field guide to bourbons. Tim B.

I bought this for my brother in law for Christmas. He loves it! Says it is very informative and he is learning lots about bourbon!

Great for bourbon enthusiasts!

Mike and Susan provide their respective honest reviews without debate-inducing rankings or “bourbon of the year” proclamations. Their differences in tasting notes embrace the reality that we all experience bourbon uniquely. I would have expected more similarities, so it was fascinating to see their themes and preferences play out through the nearly 350 (!) reviews of bourbon from major producers, craft distillers, and merchant bottlers. The Bourbon Tasting Notebook begins with a primer on what it takes to qualify as bourbon, along with a summary of the different sources of bourbon’s varied, rich flavor profiles. But the rightful focus is on tasting notes. The genius of The Bourbon Tasting Notebook is in resisting the temptation to provide rankings or scores and instead allowing readers to decide personally which bourbons are their favorites. At the same time, the book avoids being drearily neutral. Each bourbon includes a “Notes” section used primarily to give additional information about provenance, food pairing or cocktail suggestions, or batch specifics. Occasionally those notes veer to singing high praise—“Worth every penny of the sticker price. Beautifully complex and balanced.” (Wild Turkey Russell’s Reserve). And less frequently, the notes issue a polite warning to avoid the bourbon—“Contents not unpleasant, but should be much better for the money.” (Calumet Farm). Even with those assessments, the form and lack of rankings foster personal exploration and enjoyment. And of course, each page has space for the reader’s own thoughts and impressions. The Bourbon Tasting Notebook will make a great gift for any bourbon enthusiast.
