From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Highlights from the life of 16th-century theologian Martin Luther are depicted in this brief pop-up book. The story covers Luther's vow to become a monk, his studies, the 95 theses, his appearance before the Holy Roman Emperor, his escape to Wartburg Castle following the Edict of Worms (a phrase that does not appear in the text), and his translation of the Bible into German. Each page features a paragraph accompanied by colorful cartoon-style illustrations. The heavy paper stock and simple, sturdy paper engineering will stand up to a fair amount of use. Given the scarcity of biographies on Luther, especially at this level, some large libraries may wish to add this volume. However, the lack of back matter makes it a poor choice for research or report writing. Furthermore, information on the life of Luther is presented without nuance or balance, and the title is clearly intended as a tool for religious instruction: "Even today, Christians reform the church as we read the Bible, listen to the Holy Spirit, and follow Jesus in faith." VERDICT A useful choice for Sunday school and one-on-one reading at home, but of limited appeal to most libraries.—Misti Tidman, Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, OH

Review
"Can the Reformation and its impact be translated into a children's book? Yes, and here it is. Biographical details are minimized in order to highlight Luther's discovery of and witness to the Gospel. The illustrations are colorful and rich in detail. The pop-up scenes convey the energy and drama of the story of Luther and the Reformation. A delightful faith formation resource for parents, grandparents, godparents and others to share with the young children in their lives." --Kathryn A. Kleinhans, Ph.D., Professor of Religion, Wartburg College"Lively, colorful depictions of key scenes in Luther's life accompany a simple telling of high points in his dramatic story to give children a sprightly introduction to the reformer's life and basic ideas. An ideal way of helping the young get acquainted with Luther." --Robert Kolb, Professor of Systematic Theology Emeritus, Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis"The Life of Martin Luther will be a cherished addition to the library of both children and adults. The story is simply told but stunningly illustrated. Agostino Traini's drawings are whimsical and delightful. The pop-ups ensure this will be a sought-after collectible for all lovers of Luther." --Bishop Susan Johnson, ELCA"This delightful summary of Luther's reforming spirit is not just for children! It's well worth reading at any age! The Life of Martin Luther opens the doors to the surprising insights of the young monk and it will encourage all of us to pursue an on-going reformation, for the church and for the world. The next 500 years will be even better than the first 500!" --Dirk Lange, Associate Professor of Worship, Luther Seminary"What a charming book! With whimsy and insight--and some delightful pop-ups--this little book gives young folks a lovely introduction to the story of Martin Luther. Populated with a colorful cast of human and animal friends, Luther's story really comes to life in simple, humorous pictures. Adults: look for Desmond Tutu and Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the cloud of witnesses at the end!" --Bishop Guy Erwin, ELCA

This book is very well done and has colorful illustrations that capture children's attention. I like this style of pop-up because while not as fancy as the style of Sabuda, it's more durable especially since the targeted age range is stated as 3-5 years old. I feel like this is written very well to that age range as an introduction to Martin Luther. I knocked a star off though because it left me wanting more. Given the young age range, it should be assumed that the book will be read to the children by an adult. I think the book would be an easy 5 star if there were a page at the back with more detail. I know many younger children's books that include such a page so that the adult can have more information to help answer questions the children will inevitably ask. Or even show some resources where you can learn more would be a great addition! It is just a brief overview of his life, but if you are unfamiliar with Martin Luther, it would probably raise a lot of questions. Again, excellent book, and I would buy it again. It just left me wanting a little more and needing to answer several questions for my children.
I gave this book to my pastor to use in children's sermons. It is fun even for an adult to read. It tells the story of how Martin Luther came to the knowledge, of the grace, that Jesus gives. He stood up to the church in Rome, & began to reform the way people learned about God, through being able to read the Bible themselves. He translated the Bible into the people's language, German at the time, and the printing press had just been invented, so the people could get their hands on the Word of God. The Lutheran church of today came out of this movement. The colors & fun pop-ups keep the kids attention, while they learn about a very important figure of history.
Great pop-up book for children. It is not terrible intricate which makes it good for kids. I love pop-up books, but usually do not want kids to handle them as they are too delicate. This will stand up to kids if they are careful. Plus it's a good introduction for kids to the great reformer, Martin Luther. Would also make a great read-aloud, especially to a small group where they could see the pop-ups as you read.
Fun, creatively and beautifully illustrated and crafted, this story book is written well and suited for young children. I love especially that animals are everywhere and the kids I babysit always love spotting and counting them with me! A must-have if you love children and love to impart with them this special treasure of history when the Lord used Luther and others to inform, reform and transform His church by going back to His Holy and living Word.
This is a beautifully illustrated pop-up book that makes the life of Martin Luther come alive for children and adults!
Interesting overview of Luther’s life. Lots of details in drawing & craftsmanship. 12 & older; too fragile for younger children.
Excellent overview of Martin Luther's life. I love the story, the art, and the pop-up-ability.
Kids loved this book.
