About the Author

Jennifer Pharr Davis grew up in the North Carolina Mountains, where she developed a love for hiking at a young age. "The love of my life" is how Jennifer Pharr Davis refers to her husband. Actually, Jennifer Pharr Davis is the love of her own life. Although newly married to the greatest guy in the world, and as the holder of the women's record pace on the Appalachian Trail, Jennifer Pharr Davis tells husband and family she has been "called again" by the trail.Her husband isn't thrilled, his thought possibly being that getting married is another kind of calling. Perhaps he believes that both members of the partnership have set off on a new trail that's worth investigating and worth a serious time investment.The husband does uphold his part of that bargain. He spends his summer picking his way down dirt roads to reach Jennifer's stopping point. He's a wagon train of supplies and support. Sometimes he is met by a crabby and temperamental wifeWell, beans. I had been looking forward to reading yet another trail hiker's tale. But there's nary an interesting description of the trail nor does Pharr Davis tell the stories of other hikers.Also, I do have to question what Jennifer Pharr Davis' trail record means. .. How successful might other hikers be if they received the level of support Pharr Davis gets from her husband and a team of three men who meet her daily to deliver food, water, massages and so on?I stopped reading this book when Pharr Davis complained that one of these guys was messy and disorganized, forcing Pharr Davis to dig around in the SUV to find her own snacks.

I thoroughly enjoyed Jennifer Pharr Davis's book, Becoming Odyssa, and really looked forward to reading this book as a result. As opposed to not wanting Becoming Odyssa to end, I looked forward to finishing Called Again: A Story of Love and Triumph. I hate to say that, but that's how it was for me. The nature of what Jennifer was working to accomplish makes this a much different type of story, although the part leading up to her actual attempt was an enjoyable read for me. A fair amount of the content involves her frustration, lack of patience, annoyance, etc. with friends and family working to support her along the way and that significantly reduced my interest in the book. I completely understand that was part of her story with what she was going through, but it just wasn't something I wanted to invest my time to read about.

I really enjoyed this book. I admit that I agreed with some of the other reviews that the authors behavior isnt always pretty, but neither was what she was attempting to do. I live in NY very close to the AT, and have done some volunteer work maintaining the trail. I am not a hiker - and the first time I was out there painting blazes and cutting back branches I was shocked at how rough the terrain was on a part of the trail considered easy. What they were attempting was no joke and I dont think any outburst she might have had wasnt justified under the extreme stress. I was also not bothered by the fact that she didnt talk about her equipment or more technical stuff - Im not a hiker and probably would have found that boring. I have always been fascinated with the idea of hiking the trail and this account gave me a sort of first hand experience without having to leave my home. I found a video on Youtube of the author speaking about her experience - it was worth the watch. She is an engaging speaker and seems like an incredible person.

I enjoyed this story as I am amazed and completely in awe of anyone who is a thru-hiker of any trail. I've also read Wild and I have to say that after reading both stories, I'm fairly certain I will never have any desire to be a thru-hiker. I like beds, showers, and indoor plumbing. That said, I found the book inspiring, interesting, and fun to read. Even though I don't aspire to be an uber-hiker, like Jennifer Pharr Davis, I enjoyed it because I can relate to her story on some level. I have run 7 marathons, and I relate to the frustration, self-doubt, pain, internal pep talks, and the ups and downs of an endurance race/hike/physical feat. Therefore, I liked the story and reading about the highs and low points as Ms. Pharr Davis attempted to break the A.T. hiking record. I disagree with the few 1 star reviews that say she complains throughout the entire book. I think that the complaints and her raw feelings were integral to the story and perhaps the 1 star reviews were by people who had never completed any kind of endurance race or hike? I want the whole story, good and bad, when I read about someone's record hike or race. Life isn't perfect and rosy so why should her story be that way?

An excellent and well-written book about Jennifer Pharr Davis' record-breaking hike on the Appalachian Trail. Her tale is introspective and communal, with absolutely no chest-thumping. I could very much identify with her effort because she is first and foremost a hiker and not an ultra marathoner, and because back in the day, before records were kept, I was told that a friend an I had the fastest time on the Long Trail. So I can identify with 3 miles an hour. What I can't identify with is 3 mph for 16 hours a day, for 46 days!! Yikes! Even more amazing to me is that she was able to walk through her numerous maladies and not give up.I would have been interested to know more about her physiology--fiber types, treadmill testing, etc. My guess would be that at 3 mph she burns only fats, and that she has almost all slow twitch fibers, and that when she was a basketball player, she could't jump worth a damn.I had to laugh at her very honest accounts of her disagreements with her husband during her ordeal. In almost all cases, I thought he was right. Probably a guy thing.

His experiences have been translated often and published in many languages, with exhaustive notes amounting to more than half the total text. So seen as a whole the edition does boast historical accuracy and takes itself very seriously. A book both to read and to consult.

The best historical fiction I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Even with the author using literary licence to further the story, it is a seamless read. I could barely stop myself from reading through the night when my eyes were scratchy and tired. Loved the story, the history and this writer.

I really wanted to like this book, I have long been interested in the Romanovs and their brutal end. But this overly long and sometimes contorted tale took sheer willpower to finish.As others have outlined the plot, I won't repeat that. The book's started off interesting enough ,but around half way through ran away with itself , at times losing plausibility, focus, and character development or motivation. At this point, I lost interest in the characters, who had become shallow, the plot, which became confused with so many storylines, and the weak thread that held it all together. My only motivation to slug through to the end was to get to the ultimately predictable resolution.The most disturbing part is the many rave reviews this utterly less than mediocre book has gotten. My advice is to read the three star and under reviews before you make a decision. Those reviews are far more discerning, especially for the reader who appreciates a well written, carefully crafted and executed book. This was not that.

I read this book in a day. That being said, I did nothing but read. I just couldn't put it down. Thank you for writing this amazing book. Now I have to try to find something to read that will top that.

The story of the fate of the Russian royal family in the early 20th Century is well known, they were butchered by the Bolsheviks after they were transported from pillar to post during World War I. Whilst war raged, Revolution at home was building. The conspiracy theory persisted that there were indeed survivors of the mass execution, people came forward who later in the 20th century claimed to be Tatiana or Anastasia or Olga… the Romanov children who had somehow survived the massacre. And it is with this tiny percentage of doubt about the fate of the children that Gill weaves a credible and gripping story.Gill was alerted to a snippet on TV about a mooted relationship between Tatiana, one of the daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra, Tsar and Tsarina of Russia, and a cavalry officer and this serves as the foundation for a gripping time slip story.The Romanovs were the glittering family who were at the height of power as World War I started. Their glamour and wealth were beyond comprehension, they were synonymous with sparkling jewels, opulence and of course Fabergé eggs. As the war took its toll, however, the disparity between their wealth and ruthless rule, and the poverty of the populace lay at the heart of the burgeoning revolution.Cavalry officer Dimitri Yakovlevich Malama and Grand Duchess Tatiana forge a close friendship after she nurses him in a makeshift war hospital.novel set in russia The world as they know it is unravelling around them. War takes him to several fronts, yet they maintain a close and chaste connection and on the eve of yet another departure, they marry in secret. This gives him the strength to withstand the terrors and onslaughts he is about to face at the front. There he meets Rosa, but is not really emotionally available to her as he is still in thrall to his Tatiana… and he struggles to extinguish the hope of ever finding his true love alive. Rosa is a tolerant soul and tolerates his ambivalent commitment to her…Forward to early 21st Century and his great granddaughter, grappling with her husband’s infidelity, takes off for a shack set on fictional Lake Akanabee in a remote part of New York state, which was left to her in her great grandfather Dimitri’s will. She knew nothing of his existence until she was alerted to her legacy. It is here that she spends a Summer of reflection and research that unravels a painful, yet interesting family history.This novel bowls along at a very good pace, it is well researched, and the author’s passion for this period in history is palpable. You too will wonder at the fate of the Romanovs and whether indeed any members could have survived their experience and what their story might have been. This is an excellent novel to delve into this country’s troubled past.

I would call the reading of A Secret Wife, a roller coaster experience: I found the beginning insipid, uninspired and unconvincing and was about to put down the book, when Kitty’s story was introduced. Here my interest perked up, although the way she dealt with her problem was a bit too “fictional”, a bit too unreasonable. After witnessing her dramatic exit stage left, I was glad to move back in time and place, up in the roller coaster, back into struggling Russia, and was richly rewarded. This section was obviously well researched and the author marched the story breathtakingly and relentlessly to Yekaterinburg and its nightmarish horror of a bloody finale. The tempo was well spaced and spoke of real craftsmanship, making this section into a page turner. At the same time I prayed that Ms. Gill Paul won’t disappoint her readers with yet another version of an Anastasia story. Well she did, but this time for a change, it was not Anastasia, but Tatiana. At this point my roller coaster took a deep plunge and it just could not make the climb again. My opinions from here on reflect my own reactions and are not attempting to judge the quality of the book.First of fall, I was disappointed in the characters and second in the way they solved (or did not solve) an obviously horrible problem.Tatiana is too idealistically drawn and Dmitri has little that appeals to me—it is a puzzlement why two good women were so ready to sacrifice so much for him. It is not his emotionality or tears that bother me, but rather his inability to face the situation and make an honorable choice. Given his background I feel that this is a rather reasonable expectation. His dishonesty, packaged in sympathy-seeking pain, really goes against my grain. Marta and Nicholas are unfortunately and mistakenly characters of the XXI century, and not of the mid-fifties of the last century. The children of that generation did not feel called upon to pass judgment or generally meddle in the affairs of their parents. Nor did they feel that they are the middle of the world and never thought of telling their father “you were not there for me”. This attitude is as up-to-date as this morning’s paper and totally out of place when Marta and Nicholas were adults just after World War Two. They might have passed silent judgment and they might have been hurt, but criticism and open confrontation of the choices parents made were not the mode of those days. Also, if we are to believe the author, life with Rosa was peaceful, harmonious and in a way happy. If Rosa would have greatly suffered from the situation then the blind hatred of Marta and Nicholas would have been perhaps more understandable. But she was not unhappy and their “marriage” was apparently a happy one. Rosa accepted her role, she created an open, inviting home and the children had no excuse for that bottomless hatred they manifested. Strangely, Kitty could forgive her husband, but the children could not do the same for their father, although his personal life was not really their affair. Dmitri’s double life is nothing more than the secret wish of many a male. Men do have a multitude of needs and desires; not all women can fulfill all of them. We have many examples throughout history (and in several cultures) in the roles played by the lowly odalisques, or the refined hetaeras, geishas, spoiled concubines and others. Wives were there to provide pleasant homes and legitimate children; for the rest of their special needs many men developed the habit of turning to other sources.This was obviously Tatiana’s role; she was to offer refinement, intellectual stimulation and idyllic love. However, I question that even with her horrible memories and her totally damaged life how could a grand duchess be satisfied with that role. Not very plausible. This mystery just about equals the mystery of Rosa, who also willingly accepted a more or less degrading role.Their tragic situation was beyond imagination; an acceptable or at least honorable solution would have required far greater personalities than those presented and would have required far greater sacrifices than they were willing or able to make. Each character has chosen the easiest way and no amount of post explanation could fill the void the story left in me because of it.In general the highlights of the story – and there were many-- were those parts where the author followed the original, true story. When she deviated from that line, the tale turned lifeless and not truly worthy of the good parts. In closing, please remember, these are only thoughts and impressions of an old, perhaps conservative, woman and are not meant for ”grading” the novel. Author and reader

Product is advertised as 10th edition, but is actually ninth edition. Product is shipped in a plastic wrap without any sort of binder. The cover page has the Tenth Edition cover identical to the image, however the second page is the cover of the Ninth Edition and the following contents are that of the Ninth edition, not the Tenth.

Needed this textbook for a C programming class. The book does a good job of providing code examples, and introducing programming concepts and syntax. It also introduces many common programming mistakes and coding best practices I wish they included an appendix with code solutions to help with some of the more difficult exercises. Also some of the end of chapter exercises are worded somewhat vaguely

What is the deal with these other people leaving reviews about how well the book was packaged or shipped? Yikes.Disclaimer: I haven't finished the book yet, I'm through 7 chapters. I figured I'd leave this review while I remembered to do so.Prior to this book I had next to 0 programming experience. The book does a great job of guiding the reader through the basics. The book typically gives an explanation, shows a very simple example, adds a few layers of information, shows a slightly more complex example, and continues this through the chapter. The chapters are divided up into good chunks of information. Chapter 5 on functions probably should have been subdivided, it felt like it dragged on and on and contained obnoxiously large amounts of information. For the most part the book doesn't assume you know too much, and gives plenty of background information before diving in. There have been a few times where I felt like it came up short in certain areas and didn't give a fair explanation prior, but these are few and far between.One of my favorite things about this book are the examples at the end of the chapter. They start out simple and get more challenging, and there are an abundant amount of examples. If you purchased a new book you get an access code which provides additional resources online, including the sample code throughout the chapter for you to easily compile and play with as well as answers to certain problems at the end of the chapter. Here's where one of my biggest problems with the book comes. The online resources provided with a new book only contain answers to the end-of-chapter problems for chapters 1, 2, and then 10+. What in the hell happened to solutions for chapters 3 through 9? Here's why the book gets 4 stars. In my opinion chapters 2 through 8 are the meat and potatoes of the book. Selection(if, if...else), sequence and repetition(loops) are covered in these chapters. Functions (and prototypes) are covered in these chapters. These are the basic building blocks and extremely important. So I've spent a ton of time working through the end-of-chapter problems and it sucks that the solutions for chapters 3 through 9 aren't there. In some cases I'm stumped by the problem, in other cases I've come to a solution and I'd like to compare my methodology (a new programmer) to theirs (an experienced programmer).

I was required to purchase this book for a C++ programming class.The book arrived on time and in good condition, with no errors in printing.However reading through it is one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to do, and I've been through some difficult courses. They constantly introduce new terms, then never fully define them, and continue to use them throughout the book expecting you to catch on. Then they use these underdefined terms to not fully define future terms, creating a mess of bizarre language that I can't seem to understand.I read through the code examples and can understand most of it with moderate ease, and then I try to read through their explanations of it and suddenly can't comprehend a thing.As a beginner, I feel this book is lacking. It's definitely not something you can use as a sole explainer of how to program.I would recommend purchasing a different book if possible.

I often recommend Deitel & Deitel's *C++ How to Program* to anyone that asks me for the best book to learn C++. After reading several Deitel books, I recognize their familiar and highly refined "formula" for teaching fundamental topics. While this book is relatively expensive, if you're having trouble understanding pointers, then Chapter 8 - Pointers will feel like money well-spent.

Determination and incredible talent skyrocketing him over big obstacles. It's fitting that Jones' biggest passion is music because this outstanding autobiography truly SINGS. From the first pages, you're thrust into the drama -- and challenge -- of Jones' life. Born into a poor family, throughout most of his life (well into his adult years) Jones struggled with how to cope-with and at times how to distance himself from a mother who suffered from severe mental illness. Music became his savior and Jones embraced it like the stable motherly love which he sought and he lacked as a child. He embraced Mother Music, letting it's beauty embrace, comfort and sustain him. There are several things that sets this book apart from other show biz bios and makes it such sheer JOY for readers of ALL ages (old fogies like me who grew up with his music as well as young folks interested in music, interested in biographies or interested in show business and the arts in general):1.PANORAMIC STYLE. But "somehow later on the line between the reality and the fantasy got blurred." In the end, Jones writes, Jackson became "a total sponge, a chamelon." Jackson practiced hours and hours to perfect every single move, gesture and facial expression. I am haunted by Jones' portrait of Sinatra. For all the tough-guy accounts elsewhere, Sinatra comes across as a noble and principled human being -- cooking Jones breakfast when he learned that Jones stayed up all night working; insisting that African-American musicians for his Vegas concert be allowed to play and get good rooms at a casino and telling his security to do significant bodily harm to any racists who harrassed them, even the slightest bit.2)SECOND VOICES. Not all chapters are written by Jones. He also let others write their accounts about parts of his life, and not all of this material is complimentary. This adds a documentary feel and a sense of balance that most show business autobiographies lack.3)USEFUL OBSERVATIONS. In his chapter on Michael Jackon's rise to the top of the music heap he notes that writes that he learned that "Nobody stays at the top. Nobody." Success, he writes, is "about preparation, then finding the rightopportunity" -- and that he learned that "being chronically underestimated can be a gift." Jone's autobiography takes you through the 20th century's top musical and show business eras, and gifts you an incredible cast of famous well-etched cameos. The depth, ease, and detail of this panoramic journey is paralleled only by his private trek -- from poverty to aspiration to success, all amid personal family tragedies. In the end, we see a man (and artist) who constantly survived and triumphed due to his humanity -- and his unceasing personal growth.

I ,like many of the reviewers below, am just blown away by the accomplishments of this man. His life in music spans decades and musical styles that makes him unique among American musicians. From Lionel Hampton to Frank Sinatra To Michael Jackson to a seemingly endless list of film and TV scores----Q has seen and done it all musically.The book is very well written and touchingly sentimental in his recollection of deceased family members and friends. At one point I began to wonder if Q ever met a man or a woman he didn't like. He has so much that is positive to say about almost everyone he came into contact with in what is a notoriously sleezy business that I began to wonder if he was just trying to be inoffensive. I concluded at last that this guy is just blessed with a generous heart that allows him to see the best in people. His genuine love of the music and the people who make it with him just jumps off the pages.This is an inspiring story of a man who has overcome considerable obstacles both social and physcial but has retained his essential positive energy. He is one of the all time greats.

When I was 15 I bought an album called Hip Hits. I knew nothing about Quincy Jones, except that I liked the music and this was around 1963. But, when i saw his name popping-up as a composer in such movies as The Carpetbaggers, In The Heat of the Night, did I began to learn about Quincy Jones. He was the first black musician who composed music themes, but also was music direct for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, The Brothers Johnson, and of course, Michael Jackson.Quincy is the last of his breed and this book also gives acolades to other great musicians, who are long gone and unknown to many young music lovers. This is a good chance to get to know them.

I never wanted to buy or read it until I found it interesting. I used to HATE IT, but now I love it. I think Quincy tells it all on he grew up the most wonderful entertainers of the year. I think he could be an inspiration to me. I actually grew up with him since I listen to some albums and artists he work with in past. Alyssa Cole has done it again: written a historical IR romance set in a tricky time period and done so with amazing aplomb! I am usually skeptical about IR romances set during the American Civil War. This is due to too many of them romanticising the master-slave relationship in a way that, for me, feels disingenuous. In An Extraordinary Union, Cole takes the completely different angle to her story.Instead of giving us the stereotypical master and slave who fall in love trope, we get something far more exciting--two Union spies in the Loyal League infiltrating the household of a Confederate senator. One of the spies is Elle, a free Black woman with the gift of being able to remember *everything*; as a spy, she puts her life on the line by going to Richmond, Virginia to pretend to be a mute house slave to get information that will help foil the Confederacy. The other spy is Malcolm, a Scottish immigrant pretending to be a Confederate soldier who manages to get close to the senator for the very same purpose--to get whatever information he can about the Confederates' plans in order to bring them down.Of course their paths cross in a not-so-meet-cute, but it's exciting and it sets up the story well. We are reminded constantly of the dangerous situation that Elle and Malcolm are in--if they are found out, they will be tortured and/or killed. And for Elle, who has seen the horrors of slavery as a child and has willingly put herself back in the same situation for the sake of the Union, she is not willing to give in to the attraction she feels for Malcolm--initially she does not know he is also a spy, but also because she has seen the reality of her situation face to face--she and other slaves are property, they are seen as breeders, less than human, disposable. And she's seen it from the side of slavery and from the abolitionists, some of whom view abolishing slavery as a mission while not caring about or even respecting the very people they claim to want to help. Malcolm's own experiences in Scotland at the hands of English tyranny have left an indelible mark on his life and that of his family. And while he knows it cannot compare to what Elle has seen and experienced, it does make him more aware of the reality they face and it strengthens his conviction that this is not the sort of world--where men can deem other men as being less than human, buy and sell other men, rip apart families, even kill other men with no fear of the law--he wants to live in.Cole has woven an exciting story that hooked me from the first page. And my skepticism was completely blown away thanks to her writing a story that does not shy away from the harsh realities of slavery and racism. I used to live in Richmond, Virginia--the capital of the Confederacy--so it was nice being able to picture the story taking place there.Highly recommended! I am definitely looking forward to the next instalment of this series.

I am a Beverly Jenkins fan girl and like Elijah to Elisha, the mantel has been tossed. What an amazing historical romance. Alyssa Cole has a way of getting into people's attitudes and emotions that makes you feel like you're watching it in front of you. I love that she adds enough reality about the complexity of interracial love at the time while staying true to the HEA. Elle is an amazing character and considering the amount of Black Americans with Scots-Irish descent, making Malcom Scottish is what makes his falling for Elle ring true. A+ on those details which are important to historical romance readers in making this feel as if it truly happened. Looking forward to buying everything you've written like I've done with Piper Huguley.

Malcolm and Elle were the best! They really touched my heart.This takes place back during the Civil War. Elle was an ex slave with an eidetic memory who ended up working as a spy for the Union. She went undercover as a slave in a senator's house to steal intel to funnel back to her spy organization. She runs into another spy, Malcolm, who was undercover as a confederate soldier. There's an immediate draw to each other but both realize that the reality of their circumstances might be too much to overcome. However, the more they continue to work together to stop the south in the war, the closer they get.I really liked this story. There was romance. There was intrigue. Excitement. And great historical content. I really fell for these two characters and loved their story. I can't wait to read more in this series.

OK. I usually don't read Civil War romances because I find them depressing. This is not that kind of book. Elle, the heroine, is an African American spy for the Union during the Civil War. Malcolm, the hero, is also a Union spy.They're both serving in Richmond when they meet up. She's working undercover as an enslaved domestic. He's working undercover as a Confederate soldier. When they meet, sparks fly. It's a romance. You know that they're going to be together, but you don't know how.Y'all. Elle is everything. She's smart, she's brave, and she's loyal. She's the type of woman you want to read about. For me, this book is all about Elle. The cool thing is that Elle is based on a real person in history.As for Malcolm, he's slick by design. Conning folks is his superpower. It took me a little longer to warm up to him. He is loyal to the Union, though.It was an easy read and a quick one. I look forward to more historical romances from this author. I also hope that more historical romances with black women will be published. It's hard waiting for each one to come out!

I'm a life-long comic collector and I'm giving this book 5 stars from that perspective. I'm also a life-long journalist and a promoter of preserving classic newspaper comic strips. So, my work in this area, over the years, has been to try to spread the word about classic comics in particular. If you are reading this review, then you already understand the enormous importance of Wonder Woman in this genre that, today, is exploding once again.That perspective is important because this book is not the end-all, complete history of Wonder Woman. In particular, I also recommend the fascinating The Secret History of Wonder Woman That widely praised book by historian and magazine writer Jill Lepore digs deeply into the life of Wonder Woman's creator: Dr. Willim Marston. In contrast, this DK book gives us only a handful of condensed details about Marston's role in creating this superhero.So, why am I giving this book 5 stars? Because any comic collector who is, today, trying to understand this enduring character's long and winding road in media will quickly discover that Wonder Woman has nearly as many faces and alternative storylines as Batman, who is perhaps the all-time king of branching storylines. The "Wonder Woman" of 2017—the "movie version" Wonder Woman—is vastly different than the original Wonder Woman. And they are both different than other "Wonder Women" depicted in stories down through the decades.Perhaps that doesn't matter to you. And, if so, then this book may seem like an enormous, colorful mosaic of all sorts of arcane details in the evolution of Wonder Woman. But, if you're like me, and the whole evolution is fascinating—then this is a must-have volume. What's more, I've loved DK's trademark style for many years. It's simply a pleasure to open a DK book and explore!

Very good way to show her history and characters

I am SOOO happy with this. I was worried that it wouldn't contain any mentions of DC Rebirth, but it does! Her "new" Rebirth origin story is still unfolding so the book only mentions hints of what's to come but they do show her new post-rebirth costume. The book touches on EVERYTHING, including all the alternate timelines, reboots and re-tellings. Very comprehensive.

Like discovering Wonder Woman all over again. Not to be missed by fans.

I bought this book based on the preview images – I loved the layout of the pages. And I was NOT disappointed! This is such a comprehensive and beautiful guide to Wonder Woman's entire 75 year history. If you're a new fan in a Wonder Woman craze due to her upcoming film, this book is for you! If you're a longtime fan and just want to refresh your memory on your favorite villains, weapons, supporting characters, storylines, etc., then this book is for you, too! The only issue I had with this book is that my first copy came with its binding damaged, but Amazon flew to my rescue and shipped me a new copy which was in perfect condition!
